As you piece together each tile, you're not just reconstructing a rainbow but also piecing together fragments of the past. What happens when the past—or, more specifically, a piece of cultural heritage—is fabricated? From 50 replica Eiffel Towers located around the world to Saddam Hussein’s reconstructions of ancient cities, examples of forged heritage are widespread. Some are easy to dismiss as blatant frauds (the Piltdown Man), while others adhere to honest copying or respectful homage (the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee). This compelling book examines copies of historic buildings, faux archaeological sites, and other false artifacts, using them to explore the ethics and consequences of reconstructing the past; it also tackles the issues involved with faithful, “above-board” re-creations of ancient landmarks. John Darlington probes questions of historical authenticity, seeking the lessons that lurk when history is twisted to tell an untrue story. Amplified by stunning images, the narrative underscores how the issue of duplicating heritage is both intriguing and incredibly complex, especially in the twenty-first century—as communication and technology flourish, so too do our opportunities to be deceived. Synopsis Expand/Collapse Synopsis A simple guide to tracing British family tree before the onset of civil registration in 1837 and back to the Middle Ages. The trail that an ancestor leaves through the Victorian period and the twentieth century is relatively easy to follow—the records are plentiful, accessible, and commonly used. But how do you go back further, into the centuries before the central registration of births, marriages, and deaths was introduced in 1837, before the first detailed census records of 1841? How can you trace a family line back through the early modern period and perhaps into the Middle Ages? Jonathan Oates’s clearly written new handbook gives you all the background knowledge needed in order to go into this engrossing area of family history research. He starts by describing the administrative, religious, and social structures in the medieval and early modern period and shows how these relate to the family historian. Then in a sequence of accessible chapters, he describes the variety of sources the researcher can turn to. Church and parish records, the records of the professions and the courts, manorial and property records, tax records, early censuses, lists of loyalty, militia lists, charity records—all these can be consulted. He even includes a short guide to the best methods of reading medieval and early modern script. Oates’s handbook is an essential introduction for anyone who is keen to take their family history research back into the more distant past. “A pleasure to read and one that you are likely to return to time and again as you delve deeper into your family’s past.” —Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine (UK)

Studying Earth’s history through fossils, continental drift, and ancient life is crucial as it reveals the evolution of life and changes in Earth's surface over time. Fossils offer insights into past ecosystems and species development, while continental drift explains landmass shifts and their effects on climate and biodiversity. This understanding helps reconstruct past environments, track evolution, and address current and future environmental challenges. Let's engage with an excellent teaching resource on that topic! For the full available set of Teaching Resources from The Teaching Astrophysicist - Please Click Here The research project template provides the perfect grab and go, print and provide resource that can supplement lessons. It is an project template with questions to check comprehension and inspire scientific thinking. It gives a rich and supportive framework that can be tweaked as needed for students to support differentiation. Each research project template includes space for a one paragraph summary (that may or may not link to the 2 page science article also available on this topic). Students should produce a mathematical connection, an engineering / technology connection, 2 interesting facts / stats. Further there are 5 glossary terms they should fill in with their own words and 3 thought provoking questions (ie: critical thinking questions) they must answer. Finally, each template has 3 alternative thought provoking questions for younger students and 3 other alternative harder questions to extend high flying or older students. Giving you a total of 9 possible thought provoking questions that could be used with students to enhance their research and critical thinking. An illustrated look at the art and science of paleontology from its origins to today Humans have been stumbling upon the petrified remains of ancient animals since prehistoric times, leading to tales of giant dogs, deadly dragons, tree gods, sea serpents, and all manner of strange and marvelous creatures. In this richly illustrated book, David Bainbridge recounts how legends like these gradually gave rise to the modern science of paleontology, and how this pioneering discipline has reshaped our view of the natural world. Bainbridge takes readers from ancient Greece to the eighteenth century, when paleontology began to coalesce into the scientific field we know today, and discusses how contemporary paleontologists use cutting-edge technologies to flesh out the discoveries of past and present. He brings to life the stories and people behind some of the greatest fossil finds of all time, and explains how paleontology has long straddled the spheres of science and art. Bainbridge also looks to the future of the discipline, discussing how the rapid recovery of DNA and other genetic material from the fossil record promises to revolutionize our understanding of the origins and evolution of ancient life. This panoramic book brings together stunning illustrations ranging from early sketches and engravings to eye-popping paleoart and high-tech computer reconstructions.

Reconstruction Plans and Politics is a mini-lesson PowerPoint Presentation that uses differentiated instruction. This PowerPoint has two versions, basic and enriched which is why it will work from 5th -11th grade. In the past I've had co-teachers that have had their own room so we split our class up and each taught at a certain ability level. During periods that I didn't have a co-teacher I chose the ability level that was best for each class. It goes through much of the politics of Reconstruction including: Lincoln's 10% plan, Johnson's Plan, Congressional Plan, Freedman's Bureau, 13th amendment, 14th amendment, 15th amendment, military districts, assassination of Lincoln, impeachment of Johnson, Amnesty Act, Civil Rights Act of 1866, Wade-Davis Bill, and the end of Reconstruction. There is a differentiated instruction lesson plan that goes with this PowerPoint but it is sold separately. You can find it by following this link: Reconstruction Plans and Politics Lesson Plan. The lesson plan contains: 2 ability levels of a map activity vocabulary sheet Note sheet that goes with this PowerPoint graphic organizer chart activity choice sheet Cheer activity with rubric Metaphor activity with rubric Paragraph writing assignment with grading checklist Thank you in advance for rating and commenting on this PowerPoint. Please be specific when you comment so that other teachers know why you rated it the way you did. It also helps me become a better teacher. This was last revised on 11/20/2014.
