Yesterday I learned how to make lotion! This is a whole new level of Granola Mama. It was a tremendous amount of fun and I found yet another thing want to do the "natural way." Last month my Secret Sister at church gave me a sampling of four lotions. She told me later that her (real) sister made the lotions. What surprised me the most about the homemade cosmetics was that they weren't a lesser quality than something I would buy in the store. Rather, this lotion was much better! The texture is perfectly smooth, absorbs quickly, not greesy, the scents are light, compelling, and delicious, and the benefits I see with my skin are the most fantastic. I've suffered with psoriasis (chronic skin condition) on my hands for 8 years and there are a lot of things that make it worse, but nothing that makes it better... Until now. Also, the normal itchiness I always get on my legs after I shave doesn't occur when I use this all natural lotion. I'm a believer! I asked my friend if her sister would be interested in teaching me how to make the lotion and she agreed. I was so excited and a friend and I learned yesterday what goes into making an all-natural quality lotion. I posted a quick sentence about my lotion making experience on fb and was surprised at the number of people who were interesteed in the process. I'll post here what I learned yesterday. While making lotion is not labor intensive, it takes a lot of odd ingredients (definitely special purchases) and quite a bit of time. It is science and art, a combo I love. The amounts of ingredients need to be exact in their ratios so the texture comes out right, but the scents are all art. Combining the essential oils, which have healing properties of their own, was tons of fun. I made a lavender oil blend that smells earthy sweet and a mint medley that is fresh clean smelling and my husband doesn't mind using it. The basic recipe for 2 cups of lotion: 27g solid, like Shea butter, cocoa butter, or kokum 85g oil, you can really go crazy with all the veggie, fruit and plant oils 8.7g stearic acid 19g emulsifying wax 330g water 2g citric acid (preservative) Use a food scale to measure ingredients, tare after each addition and it is easy! Heat oils and butters in short bursts in the microwave until hot and melted, stiring with a wooden spoon. Heat water and citric acid to the same temperature. Use a hand mixer in the oil with one beater and slowly pour the water in while the mixure is going. Combine for about a minute. Then stir the mixture every few mintues as it cools when it begins to separate. It takes about an hour to cool down to room temperature. It starts to thicken up, but won't be the final thickness until the next day. The essential oils and herb extracts are added next. In my lavender mix, I used things that are specifically mentioned for treating psoriasis like tea tree and ylang ylang. The possibilities are just endless and you mix a few drops of this and that in a tiny container until it smells pleasant. Then you add that to the lotion, it is less than a quarter of a tsp. -- the amounts are SO small to infuse a small amount of lotion. I also learned yesterday that you can make the lotion into a sun block by adding two more ingredients after the essential oils. They are 1 TBS powdered zinc oxide (a natural mineral that block sun -- it's the main ingredient in diaper rash creams) and 1 TBS powdered titanium dioxide (a chemical compound made from a mineral). The fun thing about doing this project at a pros house is that she had TONS of stuff to work with. She had about 8 different oils to choose from, 4 butters, and about 25 essential oils to mix and match. She spends $100s on her online orders, but it is her passion and she blesses her friends and family with salves, lotions, and bath salts that are healthy and healing. I came home pumped up and excited about doing this project myself and went to the websites recommended at the class. The oils and butters are not terribly expensive and I could buy enough to make about a gallon of lotion (plain) for less than $50. The essential oils and getting a variety of them are the expensive part. For example, sandalwood is $100 an ounce. There are so many recipes online to choose from and many just add one or two essential oils to make a pleasant scent, so you can do it affordably. www.thesage.com, their blog is really fun: www.blog.thesage.com www.fromnaturewithlove.com www.libertynatural.com www.organic-creations.com www.mountainroseherbs.com I'm really excited about this idea of making lotion. I didn't rush out and make a huge order, but I am definitely give it some more thought and research. What do you think? Would you ever try to make it yourself? PS This week I plan to try an all-natural self-tanner on my pasty white legs. Stay tuned for before and after pictures. :)

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. What many people don't think about is that what they spray and slather on their skin is, in fact, absorbed into their bodies. For this reason, I really started reading the labels of my personal care and body products a few years back. There were ingredients in there that I couldn't pronounce and that the European Union's version of the FDA won't allow into products due to their many harmful effects. I started to not only buy handmade, but also all natural and organic products as much as possible. In the past year or so, as I started to make my own household cleaning products, I also started to make some of my own personal care products (deodorant powder, lip balm) as well. I'm taking it a step further with my herbalism studies now. I recently made a batch of The Queen of Hungary's Water. It has as many uses as it has variations, but my primary intent for this batch is to be used as an astringent (or toner). Astringents are used to remove excess oil, dirt, and cleanser from the skin. They tone the skin and help prepare it for moisturizing. While astringents are especially appropriate for oily skin, all types of skin can benefit from their pore-tightening effects. Legend has it that Gypsies formulated The Queen of Hungary's Water and touted it as a cure-all using it as a hair rinse, mouthwash, headache remedy, aftershave, footbath, and I'm sure more. Another legend states that Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary originated this as a perfume to either preserve her youth or catch a husband, depending on which version you read. This is one of the world's finest cosmetic formulas. It combines gentle common herbs in a masterful way, it's easy to make, and it's a versatile formula that serves many purposes. Not only can it be used as an astringent, but it can also be used as a rinse for dark hair; or as an ingredient in deodorants, herbal baths, lotions. The Vinegar of the Four Thieves is a variation of The Queen of Hungary's Water and can be used as a disinfectant. Here is the formula I used from Rosemary Gladstar. 6 parts lemon balm 4 parts chamomile 4 parts roses 3 parts calendula 3 parts comfrey leaf 1 part lemon peel 1 part rosemary 1 part sage vinegar to cover (apple cider or wine vinegar) rose water or witch hazel extract essential oil of lavender or rose (optional) 1. Place the herbs in a widemouthed jar. Fill the jar with enough vinegar that it rises an inch or two above the herb mixture. Cover tightly and let it sit in a warm spot for 2 to 3 weeks. 2. Strain out the herbs. To each cup of herbal vinegar, add 2/3 to 1 cup of rose water or witch hazel. Add a drop or two of essential oil, if desired. Rebottle. This product does not need to be refrigerated and will keep indefinitely. After the photo above was taken, I added more vinegar for it to rise the full inch or two above the herbs (the jar was full). You can see in this picture all of the beautiful colors of the herbs. Well, it's been infusing for a little more than a week and you can actually see the vinegar taking on the properties of those herbs. The vinegar is turning a gorgeous deep rose. I'm going to let it work it's magic for the full three weeks. I can't wait to try it.

We are continuing the Frau Litsa project today with a moisturizing body lotion that will really make you shine! A rejuvenating lotion with refreshing and emollient properties and fancy ingredients that leave a fruity and gourmet fragrance on your skin. It contains strawberry seed oil and authentic Chios mastic floral water, while to make it more exotic, I added illipe butter which I used for the first time. It’s a rich and non-greasy composition which is immediately absorbed and gives a silky texture and deep hydration. During the emulsification I had some technical problems because I wanted to try a new emulsifier, Polyaquol 2W and things did not go as I expected. The mixture was way too greasy and after 2 days the cream separated even though I did everything, based on the supplier’s instructions about the percentages. Since I did not have time for other experiments, I made the cream with pollawax to keep my head calm. I’ll keep you posted about new experiments on polyaquol, but for now let's go to our formula. Frau Litsa Body Lotion formula for 100 g | 3.5 oz cosmetic phase a’: 4 g | 0.14 oz illipe butter 4 g | 0.14 oz strawberry seed oil 3 g | 0.11 oz avocado oil 2 g | 0.07 oz moringa oil 4,5 g | 0.16 oz pollawax cosmetic phase b’: 50 g | 1.76 oz distilled water 11 g | 0.42 oz rose floral water 10 g | 0.35 oz Chios mastic floral water 5 g | 0.18 oz aloe vera gel 1 g | 0.04 oz powdered strawberry cosmetic phase c’: 2 g | 0.07 oz provitamin B5 (d-panthenol) 1 g | 0.04 oz oat silk 1 g | 0.04 oz broad spectrum preservative 0.5 g | 0.02 oz vitamin E cosmetic phase d': 1 g | 0.04 oz strawberry fragrance oil Before start making the lotion, sterilise the tools, the containers and your working surface, while wear definitely gloves. Follow the cosmetic cream preparation process; available here. For the colouring I used a little bit of mica. If you don’t like it, you can skip this step. extra information Strawberry seed oil is high in vitamin C and therefore fights free radicals. It detoxifies the skin, is absorbed immediately and has a strong natural fragrance while strawberry powder is a natural food for the skin. Illipe butter is very similar to cocoa butter. It comes from the seeds of the Madhuca Longifolia tree which thrives mainly in the rainforests of India and Indonesia. It has a strong moisturizing effect and treats very dry and damaged skin. Avocado oil keeps the skin healthy and nourishes it deeply while moringa oil helps the skin retain its moisture. Rose floral water restores the natural pH of the skin while Chios mastic floral water has tonic and cleansing properties. Aloe vera gel softens the skin, provitamin B5 and vitamin E have healing and antioxidant effects, while oat silk optimizes the texture of the cream and gives an immediate glow with a matte effect.
