A solid understanding of short and long vowel sounds is an important step in building students' reading and writing skills.
This product includes lists of words both real and nonsense: "CVC" "plurals" "blends" "long vowel" "short vowel" and more. Children speed read these lists to improve fluency. Only one list should be put out at a time depending upon your phonics program and what skills you have covered. I use "phonics phones" made from pvc piping (just google it- very easy to make). The kids read the words into the phones to hear themselves. You can print a few of each and laminate for center use OR give each child their own copy and do choral reading. Lots of options!! I recirculate the lists throughout the year to review and improve fluency.

Vowels are the glue that stick words together! A few things we do when we talk about a vowel: Sing the vowel song: Caution: your class will break out and spontaneously sing this many times during the day! When we talk about a vowel we use our fingers and say: A is a Vowel (hold up 2 fingers to make a V). It has 2 sounds (point to your 2 fingers). A long sound (put 2 fingers together and point to the long finger) and a short sound (point to the short finger.) Vowel exercises: We become long and short vowels and do vowel exercises. I'll say let's do 5 a exercises (or 3 e exercises, etc.) and the kids will stand straight and tall, arms in the air and say the long sound of a. Then we'll crouch down low and say the short sound of a. We'll do that 5 times. My class definitely knows their vowels! For a copy of these posters and a few independent worksheets click HERE.

Do you have a broad range of reading ability in your class, and you want to set a task for all students? Then these passages are for you! These passages allow children to practise reading long e words (ow/ou). They are scaffolded so the only complex sound is ow/ou. As these passages are scaffolded, they follow the long vowel, r controlled passages and oi/oy (see other listing), so they will also contain these sounds. (SEE FREE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE CHART FOR SCAFFOLDING) There are five levels of differentiation indicated by stars on the top right corner of each passage: Kangaroo: passage to cater for your intervention children, not yet ready to tackle long vowels. Their passage contains short vowels and cvc words. Dingo: Basic words containing the focus phoneme. Platypus: Slightly more complex words Koala: Complex words introducing multi-syllable words Echidna: For your children needing extension – with complex and multi-syllable words with a focus on dialogue to develop fluency, and words to build their vocabulary with an attached glossary. In my classroom we use these passages for repeated reading to build fluency. Children read them, in a paired (or partnered) reading activity. They have five minutes to read their passage, and this is done 3-4 times a week. Children love it when they are able to finish the whole passage by the end of the week, and to see their fluency improve. Also available is a speed read activity (see separate listing). Also differentiated to accompany the fluency passages. These speed read activities are designed to support fluency. Children have 1 minute (you set whatever time suits you) to read as many words as possible. Repeat daily to see if children can improve their score by the end of the week. All words contain words with the focus phoneme, and are differentiated ( from cvc to multi-syllable words) to cater for a range of reading levels. Some important high frequency words may appear to improve fluency (ie 'they')
