I have used the reading workshop model for about 8 years now. It has changed a lot over the years! One thing that has stayed the same is the ‘Respond to Text’ station. This is a time where students get to write about their reading. The station stays the same all year, but the activities in the station change. Below is a list of activities you can add to your ‘Respond to Text’ station at the beginning of the year. 1. Bookmark Book Report At the beginning of the year, some students struggle to finish chapter books. I find that this bookmark book report helps them stay engaged in their reading. The students keep track of the pages they read, and complete activities as they read their book. There is a fiction and nonfiction version available for download. 2. Text Structures Tri-fold Students can use this trifold to ‘hunt’ for different text structures. Just put a basket of nonfiction books at the station and you are set! It’s a great way to get them reading nonfiction books. 3. Choice Board Students get to choose what activities they’d like to complete. This is great because it can be used for the story of the week (if you follow a basal) or the chapter book they are currently reading. You can have the students glue this page inside their reading notebook, or have them staple their responses to this sheet and turn in. As the year winds down, I want my students to remain engaged, yet give them a chance to have a little fun while they spend their last few weeks with me in elementary school. Now, I use the term "fun" loosely here. ;) It isn't like we are going to be hooting and hollering. I just want them to relax and enjoy themselves, while still keeping things standards based. One thing I did this year with my students is have them respond to the Read Alouds we have been doing using a Story Wheel. This wheel is something I got from the book entitled 35 Ready-To-Go Ways to Publish Students' Research and Writing (Grades 4-8) It is an awesome book! I have been using it for YEARS (literally) as there are just so many different simple templates in it to get your kids writing without thinking they are. Anyway, back to the Story Wheel. Basically, there are 6 sections on the wheel that asks the students to respond to the reading they did. They must talk about the main character and list character traits, draw and describe the setting, discuss the character traits of the antagonist, write about both the problem and solution, as well as discuss the author's motivation and purpose for writing the story. (which actually also lends itself well to the theme of the piece.) For each section, I upped the rigor just a bit by having the students provide text evidence from the read alouds to accompany what they put on the wheel. Then, I stapled 3 or 4 of them together to hang from the ceiling as a mobile. Done and done. Seriously, this was such a simple way to keep them engaged and make them feel like they were having a little fun (since they did get to draw after all ;) ) What is some way you have had the kids respond to literature in these last few weeks?

These stations and anchor charts for reader's notebooks are designed to teach students the information they need to respond to text and to understand author technique. Use them when you are beginning your notebook work so students can get organized and ready to use their reader's notebooks for independent reading. There are now options for distance learning, including a digital reader's notebook. {SAVE: this is part of my Reader's Workshop Bundle] You will print off and assemble the anchor charts; then, you will set up the stations for your students to work through. At each one, students will fill in the information from the anchor chart on the notebook page provided. It's important for them to write down information that they need to remember, rather than paste in a completed chart. These stations provide them with both the opportunity to do so AND a handy reference to use going forward. If your directions and expectations are different than mine, you can use the editable template rather than the ready made anchor charts I have provided. In this file, you will find charts and notebook pages titled: -What Does It Mean To Be An Active Reader? -How Do I Annotate a Text? -How Do I Respond to a Text? Ah! Does anyone else get excited when the ALA announces the Newberry and Caldecott winners each year? I do! I've never participated in a Mock Caldecott or anything mainly because I'd just rather read the winner or winners--depending on how busy my book situation is ha! You can get a copy here! Here's the rundown on this years book: Jordan, a smart kid with crazy artistic talent, his going to be the new kid at a fancy private school. Yikes! It's always hard being the new kid. He is paired up with a friend to show him around and during his first day finds himself with Andy, not the nicest kid in school. Because he is quick on his feet, Jordan finds a nice friend group. Now while this is a surface skim summary, Jordan and his friend ___ struggle with the fact that teachers can never remember their names and assume their athletic abilities based on their skin color. There are in's and out's and up's and down's but the book portrays what it's like to be a regular African American kid in a rich white school. This year's Newberry Award Winner is New Kid by Jerry Craft and every page of this book eye catching and awesome! It is definitely worth reading. I am so glad that they chose this graphic novel (!!! what! what!) and I love the story. The main things that I love about this book is that they are 1. SO FUNNY--so of course you are going to keep reading 2. Relatable--Jordan (the main character goes through so many 3. SO much DISCUSSION--this book is jam packed with things that need to be discussed in today's classrooms. I also spotted this at the book fair--so keep your eye out for New Kid--it's completely worth it and your students will love reading this Newberry book!
Students will enjoy responding to each chapter (and different narrator) of Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman using this one-page sheet of Reflection choices, including three categories: Citation, Image, Connections. In the Citation category column, students have choices of questions that ask students to cite from the text and explain. In the Image category, students are asked to examine objects, symbols, setting, etc. Finally, in the Connections category, students are challenged to connect each chapter/narrator to other characters, other sources (movies, TV shows, other novels, etc.), and even to history and themselves. Enjoy!
As teachers we are constantly REINVENTING THE WHEEL!! A perfect activity for literature circles and shared reading during your literacy block! Students work independently and in groups to analyze, respond to, and discuss fictional texts. Each student receives an 8.5” x 11” page, and contributes a different piece of information to the group's overall discussion of the text. Roles can be rotated every chapter/section, or this activity can be completed after the students have read the entire text. Note: If they are new to Literature Circles, younger grades may require more direction than simply being handed their copy of the poster. It is suggested that a completed example be provided, or a section be completed together as a class so students understand teacher expectations. Roles: Setting Description- students draw and describe the setting (time/place). Main Events- students explain the main events of the plot. Character Development- students describe any growth/change in the characters. Quote Analysis- students select a quote and describe its importance in the text. To display their completed poster, students trim along the dotted edges and place their pages side by side on a background. Students must use all they have learned as readers and writers to respond to a piece of text and write a literary response -- text-dependent analysis. They must combine what they know as readers with what they have learned about writing for literary responses. The intention of this study is for students to craft critical thinking about their independent reading into a written reading response essay. Prior to completing this unit, students should have experiences in Shared Reading and Independent Reading and a variety of opportunities to jot their thinking and have discussions with partners and groups about their reading thinking. Key Teaching Points: • What is literary response writing? • Sifting through my thinking notes and jots • Narrowing down my thinking about my chosen book/theme/character/series • Stretching our thinking • Finding focus on my thinking about my reading • Drafting my response • Crafting an eye-catching lead • Crafting an eye-catching ending • Editing—Express Lane Edit • Publishing • Celebration You might also be interested in these products for your writing instruction… • Launching Writer's Workshop--A Unit of Study • Getting Started with Writer’s Notebooks • Writing Reflection and Kind Compliments • Writing Personal Narratives—A Unit of Study • Writing Expository Essays—A Unit of Study • Unit of Study for Persuasive Writing: Writing Persuasive Speeches and Letters • Book Reviews—A Writing Unit of Study This product is also part of my Writing Workshop bundle.
