Hello Everyone! Thanks for stopping by! I wanted to share a little poetry activity we did today. I wasn't really sure if it was going to be successful or not, but the kids proved me wrong. These kids are amazing little writers and poets! I decided to try writing chants today and to go along with the whole dandelion thing, I had the kids write about what they wished for. I saw a similar idea on pinterest with a neat craft connection, so I can't take credit for the original idea. I did have to change things up a bit, but I think it worked!! First we brainstormed things that we wished for and created a chart to refer to later. Then the kids wrote a rough draft with "I wish" at the beginning of each section of the chant. We did some peer editting, and wrote a final piece. The fun part came next. I traced each kiddo's profile on black paper. You should have heard the giggles!! :) They cut them out and glued them to a blue background. Then we created the dandelion in the seed stage with just sticks and yarn. I think they turned out great!! PHEW! Me too!!! :) For this printable click here. Thanks for taking a peek!! Stop by again soon! May all your wishes come true! Joyfully! Nancy

About Sustainable Revolution Urban gardeners. Native seed-saving collectives. Ecovillage developments. What is the connection between these seemingly disparate groups? The ecological design system of permaculture is the common thread that weaves them into a powerful, potentially revolutionary—or reevolutionary—movement. Permaculture is a philosophy based on common ethics of sustainable cultures throughout history that have designed settlements according to nature’s patterns and lived within its bounds. As a movement that has been building momentum for the past 40 years, it now is taking form as a growing network of sites developed with the intention of regenerating local ecologies and economies. Permaculture strategies can be used by individuals, groups, or nations to address basic human needs such as food, water, energy, and housing. As a species, humans are being called forth to evolve, using our collective intelligence to meet the challenges of the future. Yet if we are to survive our collective planetary crisis, we need to revisit history, integrating successful systems from sustainable cultures. To boldly confront our position on the brink of the earth’s carrying capacity and make changes that incorporate the wisdom of the past is truly revolutionary. Sustainable Revolution features the work of a worldwide network of visionaries, including journalists, activists, indigenous leaders and permaculturists such as David Holmgren, Vandana Shiva, Charles Eisenstein, Starhawk, Erik Assadourian, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, Albert Bates, and Geoff Lawton. This beautifully photographed collection of profiles, interviews, and essays features 60 innovative community-based projects in diverse climates across the planet. Edited by anthropologist Juliana Birnbaum Fox and award-winning activist filmmaker Louis Fox, it can be read as an informal ethnography of an international culture that is modeling solutions on the cutting edge of social and environmental change. The research presented in the book frames the permaculture movement as a significant ally to marginalized groups, such as the urban poor and native communities resisting the pressures of globalization. Sustainable Revolution uplifts and inspires with its amazing array of dynamic activists and thriving, vibrant communities.

If you're looking for a fantastic way to end your spring plant/botany unit, try this fun activity from Ms. Lopez of Coloring Outside The Lines that will have your kiddos snacking through the parts of a plant! Photo Source: coloroutsidelines.blogspot.com To prepare for your plant tasting party, Ms. Lopez suggests creating a thinking map of the parts of a plant. If they haven't already, invite your students to copy the scientific diagram in their science journals and reflect on the following prompt - What might it be like to eat a plant? Describe what a flower, stem, leaf, and roots might taste like. Have your students decide if they would want to eat a plant or if they'd rather not. Plant Tasting Party Before school put together a tray of plant parts...roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and even seeds! Roots = Carrots. Stem = Celery. Leaves = Lettuce or spinach. Flower = Cauliflower or broccoli. Seeds = Corn or peas. Fruit = Tomatoes. Add in a bit of dip and let the snacking begin! Have students record their reactions in their science journal. Did they expect to be handed a carrot when they agreed to sample a root? Broccoli as a flower? While, of course, some of your students will not be partial to vegetables, most of your kiddos will love this fun exercise! We noticed the printable worksheet we were linking to from WSU.edu no longer exists so we decided to create our own version. Hope you enjoy!
