Last week Riley Blake Designs shared their FINISHED 2023 RBD Block Challenge Quilt. Did you see it? If not, don't worry. Check out the beauty below. Can we spend a moment admiring THAT quilting!! Come on!! I'm typically not a wide open "white space" person but when RBD's long arm quilter, Chelsea Fitzgerald of @cuddleupquilts creates the secondary "stitched" blocks, keep the spaces wide open please! GREAT job Chelsea!! The bar has been set pretty high after that reveal but I am so excited to share with you what two of my quilting buddies, Lisa Garber and Diane Merritt, created. As mentioned in an earlier blog post here where Lisa created EACH of the designer blocks using (1) Fat Quarter Bundle of my Floret Collection for the 16 blocks plus my favorite background fabric, Riley Blake Confetti Cotton Cloud. I then mailed ALL the finished blocks to Diane Merritt with RBD's layout plan with a quick note stating "IF IF IF you're up to it and feeling creative, can you use my Blooming Blossom Templates and fill in the white space with a flowing/flowering vine using the easy fusible applique method? Guess what she said? Yes!!!! Isn't it beautiful?!!! I was absolutely blown away when it arrived from my long arm quilter, Penny Barnes! We need to hit pause and admire Penny's quilting too; isn't it gorgeous! My only request was heirloom quilting and look at what she did!!! Cross hatched all the blocks and stitched a double orange peel (I think that's what she calls it) in the applique space. Ok, back to the open space applique. Diane simply used the Blooming Blossom templates in a fun and unique way to create the flowing, blooming vine. Here's some close ups to see her creations and Penny's quilting too. Isn't it beautiful?!! What is more surprising to me and absolutely warms my heart is how it all came together knowing both Lisa and Diane worked completely INDEPENDENT of each other. Both were given creative liberty to use the Floret colors they wanted for the blocks and applique flowering vine. It truly is confirmation when you work within a collection, you really cannot go wrong with your color choices within the block and the overall quilt! Have you been following along with the other 15K+ who participated in this fun weekly block challenge? If not, I HIGHLY encourage you to check out the Facebook group #RBDblockchallenge | 2023. There are some incredible layouts found throughout the group. Can you keep a secret? Promise? You didn't hear this from me but there's a really, really strong possibility that RBD will be kicking off another challenge at the beginning of the new year - 2024! I know, right!!! I "think" I'll be participating in that one too. Well, I'd love to hear what you think. Are you a wide open white space kind of quilter or do you need every part of your quilt to be filled with blocks and patches of fabric? Please let me know in the comments below. Happy Quilting! Block 16 of Riley Blake Quilt Block Challenge. Checkerboard Star Quilt Block Pattern & finishing instructions for the final sampler quilt
We know many of you have been awaiting the announcement for our 2024 RBD Block Challenge and today is the DAY! The RBD Block Challenge is coming back in January! This annual challenge has grown into one of our favorite things of the year and we are thrilled to embark on another challenge quilt with you. If this is the first time you’re hearing of the RBD Block Challenge, welcome! We are happy to have you! You can find the free patterns and quilt instructions for the years prior here. We loved our quilt last year so much that we couldn’t resist hosting our challenge quilt this year with our Expressions Batiks and Confetti Cottons again! You really can’t go wrong either way. You can find the fabric requirements for both versions here. So, when does all the fun begin? We are kicking off with our first block pattern on January 9th! Find the complete schedule for each block here. FAQ’s Q: Where will I find the block patterns when they are released?A: We try to make sure our patterns are released in multiple places and accessible to everyone! We will be releasing the patterns on the scheduled days at 10 am Mountain Time. The patterns will be shared in the following locations: Q: Where do I go to share my progress and blocks as I sew?A: We have an awesome, private Facebook Group community all about the challenge! Join Here. We keep the group private to keep spam accounts at bay. If you are not on Facebook, you can share your blocks to Instagram with #RBDblockchallenge!Q: Do I have to use Riley Blake fabrics to participate?A: No! You are welcome to use any fabrics you like. You are welcome to sew along and join the Facebook Group no matter what fabrics you choose!Q: Can I purchase a quilt kit?A: Yes! At the end of this post we are listing some shops who are offering kits.Q: I am new to quilting. Is this challenge for me?A: YES! This is a fun way to try your hand at new quilt blocks. However, we call it a challenge because a few of the patterns included are just that, a challenge! If you are a brand new quilter and find you are not having success with a challenging pattern, you can always switch it out for a beginner friendly block from a prior year. We recommend this block, this block, or this block as great options.Q: I don’t know how to pick fabrics without seeing the final quilt… can I peek?A: Alright… we hear you. While we will be keeping the final quilt layout a secret (meaning not posting it publicly until the end), we are sharing a spoiler for everyone who wants to see it early. You’ve been warned! You can CLICK HERE to see the final quilt layout. But hey, don’t spoil the fun for everyone who wants to keep it a surprise! Please don’t share the final quilt layout on social media or in the FB group. Quilt Kits If we hear about a shop that has kits available, we will list them here! If you are a shop owner and want to be on this list please shoot us an email at [email protected]. You can also contact the below shops to inquire about kit availability! We can hardly wait to kick off another year with the #RBDblockchallenge! While you wait for January 9th be sure to pick out your fabric, join the FB group, and make sure you have all your tools and notions ready to go! We’ll see you soon!
