Il y a trois cents ans, les intellectuels européens des Lumières ont construit une mythologie autour de la technologie. Inspirée par l’humanisme, le colonialisme et le racisme réunis, cette mythologie a ignoré la sagesse locale et l’innovation autochtone, jugées primitives. Aujourd’hui, nous commençons doucement à réaliser que l’héritage de cette croyance nous hante. Les designers ont compris l’urgence de réduire l’impact environnemental négatif de l’humanité, mais font perdurer cette même croyance en la technologie qui repose sur l’exploitation de la nature. Réagissant aux changements climatiques par la construction d’infrastructures fortes et en favorisant une conception technologique homogène, nous ignorons un savoir millénaire sur la façon de vivre en symbiose avec la nature. Sans la mise en œuvre de systèmes flexibles qui utilisent la biodiversité comme composante, les créations demeurent intrinsèquement non durables.Lo—TEK, abréviation de Traditional Ecological Knowledge (savoir écologique traditionnel), est un ensemble de connaissances, pratiques et croyances multigénérationnelles, opposées à l’idée que l’innovation autochtone est primitive et existe indépendamment de la technologie. Au contraire, elle est sophistiquée et conçue pour fonctionner de façon durable avec des écosystèmes complexes. Préfacé par l’anthropologue Wade Davis et divisé en quatre chapitres – Montagnes, Forêts, Déserts et Milieux humides –, cet ouvrage explore des milliers d’années de sagesse et d’ingéniosité humaines issues de 18 pays dont le Pérou, la Tanzanie, le Kenya, l’Iran, l’Irak, l’Inde et l’Indonésie. Se révèle alors une mythologie ancienne dans un contexte contemporain qui radicalise l’esprit de la nature humaine. L’expérience de lecture tactile qu’offre Lo—TEK s’inscrit en écho à l’ingéniosité des projets sélectionnés avec soin pour ce livre, avec ses détails de conception sophistiqués: le cuivre du titre souligne la valeur du savoir ancestral, la couverture cartonnée évoque les matériaux bruts et la reliure à la Suisse dénude le dos des cahiers, révélant le processus de fabrication du livre, un livre qui dévoile des compétences technologiques méconnues.
