Today I will be sharing a tutorial on how to make a crazy rails quilt. (You can see more photos of my crazy rails quilt here, if you'd like.) My quilt was inspired by a vintage quilt (below) that belongs to Rebecca, who is a member of my modern quilt guild. Someone in Rebecca's family was on the verge of throwing this quilt away, but her dad stepped in a saved it. I'm so glad that this quilt was rescued. It's a beauty... so inspiring! This is the kind of quilt that one could sit under and look at the fabrics for hours. I just love it! This quilt isn't complicated, by any means, but it's the sheer number of pieces that makes it challenging. Here is a simple tutorial for you, in case you would like to make a crazy rails quilt of your own! I'm sure that I will be revisiting this pattern myself, before too long. I seem to be unable to make just one version of any quilt. :) A few things to note: All seam allowances are 1/4". Each block finishes at 3". Each individual "rail" finishes at 1" x 3". I made blocks by strip piecing, mostly, but I also pieced some blocks individually. I like doing both. Strip piecing saves a lot of time, but I am able to use up smaller pieces by making blocks one at a time. The mix of the two methods gave me a nice variety of blocks to work with in the final layout. It is a good idea to reduce your stitch length while strip piecing, so the seams don't start to separate while the blocks are being handled or arranged. (I use a stitch length setting just under 2 on my Juki, but all sewing machines vary.) To make 1 block at a time: Cut three strips of fabric 1 1/2" x 4". Sew the strips together and press seams to the side, or open, whichever you prefer. I generally press the seams toward the darker fabrics. Trim the block to 3 1/2" square. There is very little waste, as you can see. I trimmed from both ends of the block, to ensure that the block is exactly square. To make 2 blocks at a time: Cut 3 strips 1 1/2" x 7 1/2". Sew together and press seams. Trim the strip set to make 2 blocks, each measuring 3 1/2" square. To make 3 blocks at a time: Cut 3 strips 1 1/2" x 11". Sew together and press. Trim the strip set to make 3 blocks, each measuring 3 1/2" square. To make 4 blocks at a time: Cut 3 strips 1 1/2" x 14 1/2". Sew together and press. Trim the strip set to make 4 blocks, each measuring 3 1/2" square. You could make more that 4 blocks at a time, if you wanted to. Personally, I prefer to have fewer blocks that are exactly the same. Playing with different fabric combinations was a lot of fun! Strip piecing definitely helps make this quilt manageable. I made these 10 blocks in a matter of a few minutes. One other handy thing....I'm piecing a log cabin quilt (measurements here) that also uses 1 1/2" wide strips. It's nice to be able to cut fabric for both quilts at once! Quilt Sizes: size measurements # of blocks needed block layout baby 36” x 36” 144 12 x 12 small lap 48” x 60” 320 16 x 20 large lap 60” x 72” 480 20 x 24 twin 66” x 90” 660 22 x 30 queen 90” x 96” 960 30 x 32 king 108” x 108” 1296 36 x 36 I'm not going to give specific yardage requirements for each quilt size, but if you are guesstimating, a baby size quilt usually requires about 1 1/2 to 2 yards of fabric. A lap size quilt generally uses 3 1/2 to 4 yards of fabric. A twin generally uses between 5 1/2 to 6 yards of fabric. A queen generally requires about 7 1/2 to 8 yards of fabric. A king size quilt can use in the ballpark of 10 yards of fabric. This quilt has more seams than most, so it will probably require more fabric than the amounts listed. These are just very general guidelines for an idea of how much fabric you may need. If you think making a whole quilt is just crazy, (and it might be!) you could also use the block measurements for placemats. That would be pretty fun, too! It's a long way to the finished quilt if you want to design your own... Say hello to "Swarm"! I started it around May 2014, with a design idea but not very much of a clue on how to execute it. I knew I wanted to use the new line of quilting fabrics, Cotton + Steel, though, so I bought a great deal of the Basics range, and then set about cutting it up. There was a lot of sewing and cutting and ironing and trimming. It has 20 rows, and nearly 30 triangle blocks in each row. That's 600 pieces - not counting that the large triangles are made up of 2 pieces, and the small triangle blocks are made up of 4 pieces that need to be sewn together. That's at the old house - the one that we had to clear out before buying a new house, redoing it, and moving into it last year. So it kind of went on hold in the middle of all that, and then there was the settling in and the starting of the garden and the summer... I didn't get back on the job until Autumn 2015 - around March. It took me a year (April 2015) to get to the point where I had enough pieces to start putting it all together: There were times when I despaired of how many pieces were needed, and how complicated the whole quilt was. However, my quilt groups kept telling me to keep going, keep going, it looks great, it's going to be gorgeous And when it did start coming together, it was beautiful! I don't know what it is about this quilt, but it just hits people in the feels. I've had a lot of people admiring it! Maybe it's the colours, the brightness, the...well, playfulness of the pattern... At any rate, it's definitely a show-stopper! Maladicta even gave it the butt-stamp of approval. Which, okay, in this house, isn't difficult. But she was quite happy with it... I had a backing, I had a plan for quilting it, tt was going to be submitted in the Sydney Quilt Show... And then I pulled a muscle in my calf. Ow. And I couldn't do the quilting and couldn't find someone to do the quilting for me in the time left before the quilt had to be submitted. So, no show. *sighs* While at the show, I looked at the two spaces allotted to the quilts that I couldn't finish due to my injury, and sighed. I sent it off to my quilter before I went overseas, I think, and have been waiting for her to get back to me. It took a while, but when it came...it was definitely worth it! Smokey agreed. No sooner had it taken it out of the mailing bag, then she settled on it. She's since pretty much taken every opportunity to head-butt it, muzzle-rub against it, or roll in it. There's a part of me that still can't believe I thought up this pattern, let alone executed it! Name: Swarm Size: 75" x 88" Design: original by Sel I'm trying to write a pattern for it, but it's a bit exhausting, and everything's pretty busy right now. I've submitted it to the Modern Quilt Guild's competition for Quiltcon 2016 in...San Diego, I think? However, I doubt it will make it in - I don't think it's quite 'modern' enough as the MQG defines modern quilts. It looks stunning, though. (finished quilt size 50 X 63) A month or so ago, I received a go! Baby cutter from Accuquilt. I was really excited that they decided to send one to me since I had used and loved the regular Go! cutter to cut the fabric for this quilt. I'm going to take a little segway here, but it all fits in in the end, promise! My weekend was filled with family visiting from Kansas from Thursday evening until late Monday morning. We spent one day grilling and kayaking/tubing the river, most of another day at the Tour de fat, and another day in Estes Park. Back to now. In the in-between times when we weren't going somewhere or doing something, I cut and sewed this quilt. That's how easy it was with the Go! baby cutter. I have to admit, I wasn't particular if the fabric was ironed beforehand and I think that's why a few of the triangles came out slightly larger than some of the others as you can see here in the photo. But, it all worked out in the end. All in all, I am so very pleased with the Go! Baby. It makes quick work out of cutting, which is one of my least favorite parts of the quilting process. Baby Cutter and 4 7/8" triangle die (or take tons more time and cut with a rotary cutter!) 83 colored triangles cut with the die 83 white triangles cut with the die 28 tonal white triangles cut with the die 4 WOF X 4.5" strips of tonal white fabric 5 WOF X 3" plaid strips What you will do: Sew each of the 83 colored HST's to one of the 83 white HST's. Arrange your squares on point how you want them in the quilt (tip: I liked it better with the points of the colored triangles pointing up). Sew your diagonal strips of squares together, adding one of the 28 tonal white triangles to each end of each strip. Sew your strips together, lining up the seams. Trim...

Hi, all! How are your own personal scrap issues coming along? I have barely made a dent in my overflowing pile of scraps, but I do feel more encouraged by what I've done. I'm finding it's fun and I have so. many. ideas. rolling around in my head that I want to do! It seems like everywhere I look, I see another great thing to do with my scraps.... So I thought I'd share some of what I've found with you this week. Maybe it will inspire you too! *&*&*&*&*&*&* I love love love this scrappy flying geese quilt - the ones I've made in the past use a 6.5" rectangle and 3.5" squares for the corners, which might be large for some folks' scrap baskets, but you could reduce the size (4.5" rectangle and 2.5" squares) and achieve the same effect. This quilt was made by Dorthe, who blogs over at LaLaLa Patchwork - her site is in German, but there's lots of gorgeous eye candy there! And Staci, over at The Confused Quilter, is making this absolutely gorgeous version of Elizabeth Hartmann's Sparkle Punch quilt. Wouldn't it look fabulous scrappy? I am so inspired.... This beautiful Scrappy Chains quilt caught my eye - I can see this in a smaller block size, too, and I love the fact that it doesn't have a consistently colored chain. Truly scrappy! There is a video tutorial available for this quilt - click here to see it! And look at this beauty! What a great way to use up a rainbow of strips. It could be as small as a baby quilt, or go all the way up to king-size! It's also a great alternative to a traditional string block, if you want to do something a little "out of the box". And isn't this cute? It's the pattern I'm using currently for a couple of commission quilts, but it could easily turn into a scrap quilt - because don't we all have quite a few 2.5" strips left over from other projects? A sweet and simple alternative to a traditional jelly roll quilt too, for that jelly roll you've got sitting around that you bought because the fabric is just.so.pretty! This is a great rail fence quilt, which looks like it uses bricks and random squares. I haven't had a chance to graph this one out yet, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's 2.5" x 4.5" bricks and 2.5" squares in the darker zigs, and 2.5" squares in the light zags. Isn't this amazing? A great way to use up leftover strips of binding, I think! I save mine for scrappy quilts, but there are always times when the bin starts to overflow - and this would be a very different way to use those pieces! And here's another strippy block quilt, with a little twist - tiny block strips! I can see two ways to make this - one would be to use up all those tiny pieces of fabric you just can't bear to throw away, the other would be to make strip sets and cross-cut them to create those strips of tiny blocks. Either way, you're using up scraps! And is this not just the cutest quilt? I love the use of different prints in the same colors for these woven strips - simple, but it adds so much depth and interest to the quilt. 2.5" squares in colors and 4.5" white squares would make this quilt quickly! If you don't have time or energy to make a whole quilt, how about these adorable pincushions made by the queen of tiny scraps, AmandaJean of Crazy Mom Quilts? I love seeing her cheerful bowls full of pincushions, and her blog is a great resource for easy quilt ideas and beautiful scrap creations! Emily Bailey of Em's Scrap Bag has been sharing a lot of gorgeous scrap quilts on Facebook these days - and this is one of my favorites! Notice that the horizontal strings are repeats of one of the fabrics in the coin strips - it gives this quilt a great geometric effect. And the cross-hatch quilting is amazing! And speaking of Emily, have you signed up to participate in the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge 2016 yet? Emily collects quilts for Quilty Hugs For Happy Chemo, and that's just one of the charities we are spotlighting this year. There's also Covered in Love, spearheaded by Kat Drinkwater, who collects quilts for terminally ill patients in Tyler, Texas. And for our Canadian quilters (and anyone else who wants to send a quilt to the frozen North) there's the Yukon Women's Transition Home, which serves women and children escaping from abusive home situations. The Challenge runs until the end of May, so you've got plenty of time to dig through your scraps and make a beautiful quilt to wrap someone in love. The August Breakfast Club is next week and I realized yesterday that I forgot to share Show and Tell from July. So here is a quick look as what the ladies have accomplished even with the nice summer weather we had in May, June and July. This is a laser cut kit from an Alaska designer, Dana Michelle. Here is a link to her webstore: Wildfire Designs. She has several great Alaska theme kits. A small quilt that will be made into a pillow for a bride. The colors are her wedding colors. This little wreath is such a popular pattern lately, "Fold'n Stitch Wreath." I love Marie's version because she did a blanket stitch that really makes a great addition to the design. This is one of those deceptive quilts that you start putting together with your scraps but find you need to buy a little fat quarter or two to get the colors just right! Laura started this with some leftover layer cakes. We all know how that happens. Your trying to just pull from your stash but you find something is missing. The end result is beautiful so she made the right choice. This beautiful cross stitch piece is being turned into a pillow. Perfect for Barb's cabin. This is the pattern, Himalayan Pink. I need to add a picture of mine to this post. I think this was our April project. I believe this was a kit that was added to...I should have written some notes. Obviously I should have gotten this quilter to turn her quilt so we could see it properly...but you get the idea. I think this was another Breakfast Club pattern from a long time ago. I remember it but can't remember the name. A small project from scraps. And a nice big quilt from Thimbleberry fabrics. A sweet quilt for a baby girl. My version of Himalayan Pink with a set of batiks from Moda's Holly Taylor. They had been aging just long enough! And our project for August will be this Moda Bake Shop pattern, "Speedwell Quilt." It is a layer cake pattern, 54 x 72-inches. Looks like a great quickie.

Midnight Glow Quilt Tutorial
Welcome! If you are just joining us, information about materials can be found here, and here are the previous blocks: Block 1, Block 2, Block 3, Block 4, Block 5, Block 6, Block 7, Block 8, Block 9, Block 10, Block 11, Block 12, Block 13, Block 14, Block 15, Block 16, Block 17, Block 18, Block 19, Block 20, Block 21. Materials: 8 3.5" squares of Color A 8 3.5" squares of Color B *note* these are the essential materials for each block, so you can cut several blocks worth of fabric at once to save time! Create your blocks, following the same procedure as last week. If you need help making your blocks, please see this post. You should end up with 16 2.5" squares. Ready to lay out your block? Here we go! ROW 1 ROW 2 ROW 3 ROW 4 After you have sewn your squares into rows, press your seams. I like to press odd numbered rows to the left, and even to the right. It helps to use a small piece of paper to number your rows. I like the tiny post-it notes. After pressing, you are ready to sew your rows together! Pin, if necessary, but I find that these short rows don't require pinning. Press one final time, and voila! Another finished block! Only 50 to go! Pat yourself on the back! Remember to add your blocks to our flickr group!
