You've probably been seeing this great new technique a lot lately! This table topper is hanging in our store, just behind the front counter. Everyone is always wondering, "How did you make that?" It may look difficult, but is actually A LOT easier than you think! Let us introduce you to the "Lil' Twister Tool." It's a small square ruler that allows you to easily make pinwheels without tracing or having to use templates. This ruler has nice gripper feet on the bottom to prevent it from slipping around on your fabric. Let's get started and I'll show you how to use this nifty little guy! You'll need a Charm Pack or 36 - 5" charm squares in a variety of fabrics. For this project we used the "Oh My!" by Sanae for Moda Fabrics. The colors are so bold and look amazing with the Twister Tool. First, lay out the 36 charm squares that you want to use. Sew 6 squares together to create a row, repeat this to create 6 rows. Press the seams on each row going in the opposite direction. Sew the 6 rows together to create one big block that is 6 squares across by 6 squares down. Next, we are going to add a white border. Cut four (4) 3" strips. Measure the width of your large charm square block and cut the length of the borders accordingly. Sew on the borders and press. It should now look like this: Here comes the fun part! Now we get to use the Twister Tool. We're going to go from left to right. Place the Twister Tool in the upper left corner so that it is on the white border and overlapping the top row of charm squares. The lines on the Twister Tool will line up with your seams. The only exception is there will not be seams in the borders. Just use the seams from the charms to line up the tool. Use your rotary cutter to cut around all four sides of the Twister Tool. The cut piece will look like this (the colored lines indicate where the original seams are): Make sure to go from left to right, then top to bottom. It's easier to cut your piece and immediately bring it up and place it. Keep two rows together to make sure you're laying it out correctly. Sew each row together, making sure not to stretch the fabric. You will have 7 rows total. Make sure to press the seams in alternating directions on every other row. The fabric will be very stretchy. Try your best not to pull or stretch the fabric while you're pressing the seams. Sew all 7 rows together and there you have it! Doesn't it look amazing? You can also add borders...we added an inner border and outer border. Our inner border was cut at 1-3/4" and the outer border was cut at 4-1/2", however you can do them as large or small as you like. Finished size of our table topper came out at 32-1/2" square.

For those of you that have been reading my blog awhile, you have heard me talk of my amazing sisters. Two older, Jeanetter from Inchworm Fabrics and her blog, Margaret from Average Quilter, then my younger sister Beverly of Quilters Corner. Each sister has their own nitch in the quilting world. As you see, Jeanette has her own store, Margaret has her own longarm quilting and embroidery business, and Beverly just recently got a longarm. My mother is just as amazing, she is the long time quilter, she use to tailor clothes and make all of us girls clothes for school. Happy Mother's Day to all of my sisters and mother!!! Jeanette just recently wrote up the pattern for this quilt "Oklahoma Twister"...what a fitting name. . Here it is made up Put your blinders on.... Here is my square....this was so fast, fun, and the pattern is so easy to understand. I am trying to put the breaks on myself and not cut out enough squares for a quilt. Why....because I have soooooooooooooooo much to finish. So her making this pattern is a true motivator for me...gonna get a few things done and then I am going to make a quilt and in my lime green....Ooooo la la Jeanette is giving away a pattern on her blog and I am giving away one here. x This twister quilt was made following Jasmine's tutorial except I cut my squares at 6 inches instead of 10 to make a smaller twister block. And I used white for every other twister to lighten the quilt up a bit. I laid my ruler 1.5 inches in from the left on the top and 1.5 inches in from the right on the bottom and made a cut. I don't have a rotating mat big enough so I just moved my ruler without moving the fabric. Repeat the same cut. Each piece ends up looking exactly the same. NOTE: remember to place all squares right side up when cutting on the 4 pieces or they will be backwards. I was deciding between twisters that were all the same in the block or the scrappy version. After I laid out the pieces, I decided it would be easier to cut some of the white into 2 pieces instead of 4 so there would be less sewing. I forgot to take a picture of this and you can't see it in the picture. Sorry! I went with the scrappy version. I somewhat randomly placed a black and red print together and sewed all the blocks. Then I trimmed them to 4.5 inches. Them placed them out on the design wall to make sure all the different fabrics got spread out. I really love this quilt! I plan on making some more in the future. Perhaps lime green and teal or maybe even 3 different colors. Lots of options with this pattern. Hope you give it a try!

Layered, Quilted and Bound The wall-hanging measures 22-1/2" square Although I was not aware of it at the time I wrote this post, a printed pattern for this wall-hanging is available for sale. The pattern will guide and help you to assemble the pieces of the jig-saw puzzle. This quilt was started as a Christmas in July project, just after I'd acquired the Li'l Twister tool. The tool simplified the construction of this quilt because of the little feet on the underside of the ruler that grip the fabric and raise the ruler off the seams to make it easier to cut out the 3-1/2" squares. Or you can make your own template using a 3-1/2" square ruler. Make your own template I used a charm pack called Winterscapes, manufactured by Benartex, which was purchased from Craftsy. Winterscapes 5" square Charm Pack The inspiration for this quilt came from a post on The Knitting Quilter. I imitated the fabric configuration to achieve the wreath effect and used graph paper and colored pencils to keep the design straight. The white squares form a cross in the center and cornerstones in this configuration and the whole block is surrounded by a 3-1/2" border. Red, White and Green Fabric Configuration using 5" squares from the charm pack Tips: I made sure to consistently place the logo on the Li'l Twister tool in the bottom right hand corner of each square. I also made a conscious decision to cut the squares from top to bottom and left to right. The third tip is to cut each square and place it immediately on a design wall in the same order it came off the above block. Once all the 3-1/2" squares are cut and placed on the design wall, the pinwheels or whirlygigs become noticeable. Cut squares are placed on work surface After the horizontal columns are chain-sewn, each row was attached to the row below it and the entire block took on the appearance of a perforated curtain. I pressed odd rows to the left and even rows to the right so that seams were nested which always makes sewing easier. Horizontal columns are chain-sewn All the vertical rows are sewn down I chose a Christmas tree fabric for the borders. The quilt was measured across the center, horizontally, and two borders were cut to this length and sewn to the top and bottom. Horizontal borders are attached The quilt was measured down the center, vertically, after the two horizontal borders were added and two borders were cut to this length and sewn to the sides. A multi-colored rickrack was sewn along the seam between the quilt top and borders. Multi-colored rickrack sewn along seams The quilt top was layered with batting and the same border fabric was used on the back. I chose to quilt around the outline of the pinwheels. This quilting is more visible on the back of the quilt. Quilting on back of quilt I made straight-edge binding from the same Christmas fabric that is on the borders and the back. The mitered corners came out really well because of a neat trick I tried for the first time. I was aiming for a half inch binding. After quilting the quilt, I trimmed the batting and backing a quarter inch away from the four sides of the quilt top. During the binding step, I stopped stitching 1/2" from each corner, turned the quilt and back-stitched all the way off the top of the quilt. I then removed the quilt from the sewing machine, folded the binding up at a 45 degree angle to the corner and folded it down along the top edge of the batting (instead of aligning it with the quilt top) and then down the side of the quilt top. I then sewed a 1/4" seam beginning from the top of the folded edge down the side of the quilt top. Perfect mitered corners The binding was folded to the back, pinned to make sure the binding on the back covered the sewn line and was sewed in the ditch along the seam of the binding on the front. Binding is machine sewn on the back This was a most interesting project, and I hope you will give it a try. There are still two and a half months to Christmas, so there's lots of time to get it done! The first is "Zig & Zag" by Betsy Vinegrad. She writes, "'Zig & Zag' are a pair of quilts made in a color class at the City Quilter (NYC). The challenge was to use black, white and gray plus less than 10 percent of any other color." "Private Lessons with Karen Jack" by Wannetta Phillips uses the Twister Tool from CS Designs which I featured in my March 4, 2012 post titled "Change." Mary Ames, "Black & White" was a small group group created from the members swapping of nine identical blocks. Below is JoAnn Lepore's "Posie #7." This is the seventh in the four-patch stacked posie quilts JoAnn has made. It earned her Second Place in the Pieced Quilt, Machine Quilted- Large category. "I love you more than you know" is seen below. It is Wendy Sheridan's answer to a two-color quilt challenge. She writes, "This quilt reproduces a 'QR-Code' which can be scanned by a smart phone or other reader and encodes any sort of text. This code scans and the text encoded into the pattern is 'I love you more than you know.'" This was my personal favorite of the Black and Whites in this show. Below is another beautiful black and white, but I was remiss in photographing the description, so I can't tell you anything about it. Sorry. "Two Faces" by Elsie Sienkiewicz is the result of an art quilt group challenge. Elsie writes, "It was inspired by a black and white sketch of two faces. Each quilt had to be constructed of five or more sections, each which highlighted a different technique. My interpretation includes hand applique, ink, hand reverse applique, machine applique, thread-work, embellishment and machine quilting." WOW! Finally, from the two-color category using red instead of black, come "I am a Woman" also by Elsie Sienkiewicz. It is the story of her life of 74 years through all the roles she has played as a woman. Elsie so beautifully writes, "Creating this quilt was like walking down memory lane of my life. As the quilt progressed, I realized it is actually a love story of my life with Anthony. We married in 1957, when women's roles were strictly defined by society and definitely subservient to men's roles. I was lucky enough to have married to a man who worked two jobs so that I could stay home with the children when they were young, who encouraged me to go back to college in my 30s and who understood when I had to work long hours after I had a career. During our 56 years of marriage, I have been his wife, mother of his children, a businesswoman, and now an artist, and the one constant I have always been sure of, I am the woman he loves." Twister is finished! I have so much enjoyed stitching this design (by Patricia Spencer), and I varied the stitches somewhat. The pattern had several repeated throughout the design, but I wanted them all different. In the end I did make the 4 wedges surrounding each centre square the same, for a bit of continuity - but otherwise there are no repeats. All the stitches are diagonals with no crossed stitches at all. And it really is straight and flat, even if it doesn't look it here! Blogged at pinsneedles.wordpress.com/

Dus geen patroon, maar wél inspiratie... kijk eens bij oude kruissteek-patroontjes bijvoorbeeld. Zo zag ik ooit eens deze afbeelding (en écht, ik was van plan om ooit een dekentje te maken van heel veel granny squares.....maar als jullie daar op moeten wachten kon het nog wel 50 jaar gaan duren....), via het Victoria en Albert Museum in Londen: Het was naar aanleiding van een tentoonstelling in dit museum over pixels of iets dergelijks. Helaas werkt de link niet meer, maar het plaatje heb ik bewaard. dit lijkt me nu zo leuk om met Grannies te maken,.,, je moet 'm even van een afstandje bekijken en een beetje scheel kijken - dan is-tie op z'n mooist! I'm trying out a new tool this week called the L'il Twister; it's supposed to make pinwheels easier. Right out of the gate I'm a little skeptical, because how could they be any easier than the half-square triangle kind? But I'm giving it a go with these cute fabrics... lots of polka dot charm squares, some Moda Bleached White solid, and a flower stripe from Michael Miller: Start by making a four-patch unit with charm squares and border it with 3" cut strips on all sides... add this tool... Cut like so... Re-arrange like so... And sew it all back together to make this ultra-cute pinwheel! The finished block is 9" square. As I was going through this process, I was thinking, "this sure is a LOT of seams and cutting to make a 9" block! And this (photo below) is a LOT of waste!" (BTW - I loathe fabric waste, except in the case of paper-piecing New York Beauties... I mean how else are you going to get those super-sharp points, right?) Anyway, even though I was extremely skeptical and so sure that I would not be happy with this tool, I can report that I AM happy with it. Those pinwheels are so cute and the process required little more thought than which charm squares to put together, that I have been won over. I'll keep you updated on the progress of this project; it's going to be a baby quilt when it's finished. Incidentally, there is another Twister Tool sized to use with layer-cake squares and several projects for using both tools in the new book Let's Twist published by Country Schoolhouse Quilt Shop. It seems that quilt shops are having a difficult time keeping these items in stock, so I don't know where to direct you to purchase them. If I get more info I'll pass it on!

I hesitated to join this hop at first...Having missed the 60s by a mere 382 days, what did I know about them?! I also never played Twister (gasp!) but I do have a thing for batiks and I do love my twister rulers. I'm actually surprised no one else in the hop has used a twister ruler yet... I wanted to try designing my own twister pattern but with life (and death) in the way I just wasn't finding inspiration. And then one of the other hoppers sent me something that finally kicked my brain into gear. As soon as I got home I whipped up this simple little tie dye style swirl in EQ7 and picked fabric. Surprise - there is no purple in my project! I cut out roughly 200 squares and sewed them all together with the requisite borders. Luckily Zorro offered to help with stitching. I almost forgot to take a picture of the layout but Midgie held it in place for me. Midgie even held the piece in place while I trimmed out all those tiny pieces. Eventually I ended up with a wonderful project that I still don't know what to do with. Once I figure that out I'll add borders and quilt it up. It will probably be quilted very simply since there are a ton of seams! Yeah, at first I was going to press the seams open... that didn't last long because with enough steam I *can* get it to lay flat w/out opening them up :) Wondering how big this project ended up? Midgie offered to pose again with the finished project! Quite a difference, no? Here's another view...yes, that is an American Quarter! Thank you to all the hoppers who have stopped by today.
