Inspired by the Arizona desert sunset and 70s ski attire, this satin quilted bomber jacket is a sequel to our best-selling navy blue jacket of the same name. This colorway was a hit three years ago, and we are bringing it back after countless requests. And this time we have added sizes X, 2XL and 3X. We designed this dream jacket to have all the most desirable qualities -- from the lightweight soft jet black quilted fabric, to the 60s style high-quality gold plated metal YKK circle zipper. This jacket features a sunburst back detail of harvest orange, burgundy, and mauve, trimmed with mustard yellow piping. The fit of this jacket is inspired by some of our favorite 70s vintage bomber, motorcycle and hunting jackets. We took our favorite elements of each to come up with this cropped style that's stylishly tailored yet offers enough comfort and movement to make this jacket perfect for everyday wear throughout the seasons. Pair it with shorts and a tank on a breezy summer night, or later over a hoodie in the winter. Red & white quilt sold at an online auction. BlockBase #3390 A combination of whirling spokes and spiky ring. The Ladies Art Company catalog published the pattern about 1890 as Rising Sun. The red and white quilt might have been made from their pattern. Ruby Short McKim published it in her Designs Worth Doing book and also as a part of a newspaper series of sampler blocks in the Denver Post in 1931. Lynn has a collection of the McKim samplers, which was a popular design in the early 1930s. http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/2013/02/ruby-mckim-in-denver-post.html The Rising Sun or Circle Saw pattern has been published several times. McKim pictured the outer spikes in colored pairs. Names include: Wagon Wheel from Hearth & Home magazine in the early 20th century. Other names: Wheel of Life and Circle Saw. From the Kansas City Star in 1936 H.H. Ver Mehren's pattern company, which pattern collectors call Home Art, published it as Wheel of Life in the 1930s. But quilters were using the pattern before it was published. Quilt by Elizabeth Guest Hall, DeKalb County, Georgia 1880-1910 BlockBase shows three variations differentiated by the number of whirling spokes in the center. The quilts above all have 12 center spokes. 24 spokes by Eliza Ann Mattingly, Grayson County, Kentucky, about 1870-1900 From the Kentucky project & the Quilt Index http://www.quiltindex.org/fulldisplay.php?kid=1A-39-221 The Florida Project recorded one with 20 spokes dated and signed 1857 by Annie Wilson Hall of New York City. She was a professional seamstress. Read more about her here: http://www.quiltindex.org/fulldisplay.php?kid=53-9E-165 The Texas Project recorded one attributed to Mrs Josiah Barrow and estimated a date of the 1820s, but it was likely made later by her daughter Harrie E. Over the last week or so, I've been working on a class sample for a free motion quilting class I'll be teaching in November. It has been such a lot of fun to work on this quilt - and it's pretty much done! I have used Karlee Porter's Graffiti Quilting book as a jumping point for this quilt - it's a great ideas book. As I became more confident with this style of quilting, I tried to bring in my own elements more, but it's definitely inspired by Karlee's phenomenal work. All my students will be purchasing a copy of the book too - it's a great resource. I am still unpicking that dark red bit in the middle, and I will fix that bit very soon - but apart from that it's finished. I definitely like some parts better than others - but it will be good to show students what works and doesn't work ;o) It's really hard to capture the thread colours in photos, but I've used a rainbow of Aurifil threads (some 40wt, some 50wt) starting with red in the centre. Most of the thread colours I used were on the light side - I did start quilting with navy thread, but I decided pretty quickly that it was a bit dark, and changed to a softer variegated blue. I especially liked quilting with 40wt variegated thread on this quilt; once I got used to using contrasting thread it made it interesting to see the subtle change in colour starting to appear. I used two layers of wool/cotton batting on this one (it's only about 40" square so it wasn't too heavy) - and it's given the quilting a gorgeous texture. It is a pretty stiff quilt with all that quilting though - which made it tricky to move it around toward the end! It needs to be washed and blocked once it's completely done - it is pretty wavy around the edges, but I'm hoping it will flatten out when I block it. I started quilting my Aviatrix today too - so I'm hoping I'll have more quilting progress to share soon :o) xx Jess
The rising sun quilt block pattern can be made with expert precision by implementing the paper piecing foundation pattern that we present here. Scraps can be used or you can use materials that we have suggested. Our suggested material amounts are an over-exaggeration, so if you make a mistake you always have more fabric to work with. Our pattern makes a 6x6 inch quilting block with a 1/4 inch grace allowance. This way you can make any size quilt you desire within 6 inch increments of your desired result. Our directions will walk you through the whole process of using our pattern to make this beautiful quilting block. You should already know how to piece together blocks and it's best to know how to use a paper piecing pattern. Even if you've never used one before, we walk you through it in our directions. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Finished quilting block is 6x6 inches with a 1/4 inch grace allowance for piecing. MATERIALS: Fabric in 5 different colors (1/4 yard each prefered, but less will be used). YOU WILL ALSO NEED: Printer Paper Pins Needle and thread/sewing machine This is for the block pattern only. Because of the nature of this item, no returns are given.

March is here along with the first month of the Delilah Quilt template of the month program, designed by Jen Kingwell. This quilt is an exciting challenge for all quilters, and I'm excited to be participating in this program. This amazing quilt pattern includes using acrylic templates, sewing y-seams and curves, along with 6, 9, and 12 inch blocks...whew! Each month as I work through the blocks I'll post an update including some tips. I'd love to see what everyone is creating so please join the linkup below. If you're looking for more inspiration check out this Pinterest board for great ideas. So far the fabric choices are looking wonderful, can't wait to see more. Block 1 - Rising Sun Tips for working with the templates: Cut your fabric into smaller pieces that will accommodate what you are cutting without a lot of leftover. This will stop you from 'dragging' around a bunch of fabric as you cut. Add a piece of painters tape to the bottom of your template so it sticks to the fabric so the template doesn't slip when you are cutting. If you can splurge, get a rotating cutting mat, it makes cutting so much easier. Use a small rotary cutter, either 18mm or 28mm. Tips for the Rising Sun block: Watch this video to get started learning how to sew curves and then practice before you use your good fabric: Sew Easy: Piecing Curves With these small curves, I found it helpful to lift my presser foot a few times to adjust the bulk of the top fabric while I sewed the curves. Make sure your needle is down, go slow and be patient, you can do it! I used a combination of open and to the side seams while ironing. Iron the half moon units with open seams. You can press the quarter moon units to the side. I ironed the rows with open seams. There is so much to love about the challenge of this project, especially choosing your fabrics and learning new techniques. Enjoy the process and celebrate what you make! An InLinkz Link-up
Rising Sun March 17, 1933-The Rising Sun quilt block originated in 1778 according to Nancy Cabot who published it in her column. She says that this block has had many name changes over the years- Wheel of Fortune, Cogwheel and Rolling Wheel. Here is a link to some antique quilts made from this block. I wasn't sure how this block may have been made until I saw this post. It's all hand pieced! I think the outer ring could probably be paper pieced with the inner ring being sewn on the machine and preferably not by hand if i was going to make it. Once again, this block is not suitable for a six inch block. You can find this block in Electric Quilt's BlockBase program as #3390 if you would like to try to make it. There's an updated version of this block here. I love it! Tomorrow-Barbara Frietchie block

Dear Jane Quilt - Block E5 Rising Sun As you will see from my other posts I have a few other projects on the go at the moment which means Dear Jane is taking a back seat for the time being. Even with the excitement of new colours, I am finding it difficult to find time to do the blocks. This was a nice simple block. In the original Dear Jane quilt, this block is done in red and white, which ties in with its original Japanese origin. Mine is blue. Techniques: English Paper Piecing, Applique Pieces: 17
Inspired by the Arizona desert sunset and 70s ski attire, this satin quilted bomber jacket is one of our biggest -- and first! -- feats yet in fashion design. In our years of hunting vintage, we have undyingly dreamed of finding a jacket like this on a thrift store rack or at an estate sale, with no avail. So we took matters into our own hands by crafting this gem from scratch, with all the most desirable qualities -- from the lightweight quilted texture all the way down to the 60s style metal YKK circle zipper. If you are looking for the bomber jacket Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders) is wearing in the ABC show “Stumptown,” then yes, you have found it! This is THE original and authentic jacket featured on the show! We spent hours on end examining hundreds of color shades and combinations to come up with this perfect mix of navy blue, burnt orange, harvest gold, and champagne... with a magical pop of hot pink piping that we've dreamed about but had never actually seen on a piece of clothing. Pair it with shorts and a tank on a breezy summer night, or later over a sweater or hoodie in the winter. We guarantee there's nobody else out there selling a jacket like this, because we've been searching for years. For yourself and us both, we think this jacket is proof that dreams can come true. A beautiful abstract painting of a sun rising over the ocean surrounded by Mountains in the distance. Colorful and vibrant.
I've finally made it back to my yellow birds today, and had quite a productive morning. I grew my last sun block until it fitted with its fellows. then I added them all onto the big piece I'd already done. Then, for the umpteenth time I laid out my remaining yellow birds, changed my mind twice and ended up with the chunk that is now in the bottom right corner. All I need to do now is attach the top bird and then this side can be added on. The remaining birds are not so much a well thought out set as the ones I haven't wanted anywhere else, so I'm hoping that they will not take this amiss and that I can piece them together without too much difficulty. If that goes smoothly then I can think about what next.

Sienna Burst Quilt Pattern by Meghan of Then Came June. The Sienna Burst Quilt Pattern is inspired by the desert, where I grew up. It is a play on gems, starry skies and adobe windows. It is the perfect quilt pattern to mix and match your favorite FQs or the newest line you love. The wall hanging is the perfect size and creates a fun secondary pattern. This pattern is for ambitious beginners or immediate skilled quilters. The pattern assumes quilter has made a few quilts previously and has knowledge of basic piecing and can use consistent 1/4" seam allowances. The pattern requires FQs and yardage of background fabric. **This is a downloadable PDF, being instantly delivered to your email after your purchase is complete.
