Happy 150 years Canada! I put the last stitches in yesterday with just a few hours to spare! Each white leaf is labelled with a province or territory. I had planned to include the date each joined Confederation, but they would have been too small to be legible. Thank you to all who commented on my last post and talked me off the ledge, so to speak. I put down the seam ripper and left the 150 and dates the way they were, and that was the right thing to do! Rosie approves! Super easy to piece. This pattern has two sizes, a generous baby size 45" x 54" (big enough for a toddler) and a Throw or Twin size 63" x 72". This would also make a nice Quilt of Valour Canada quilt made with Northcott's Canadian fabric. The fabric featured in the images and on the pattern is Little Fawn Celebration by Nina Stajner for Dear Stella fabrics. I pieced this quilt top a few years ago, it has been in the closet for so long waiting to be quilted. I finally got it out and did the quilting to have it ready for Canada Day. It sure feels good to have this quilt completed. The Canadian flag has the maple leaf and red and white. The pattern is designed by a local quilter. I love the nine patches in the sashing. Boo just wanted to say "Hi". Happy Canada Day!

So last fall one day, I got an email from Pam Bono, a well-known U.S. quilter, asking if she could donate a poppy pattern to Quilts of Valour to use. Of course we were pleased to get the pattern and decided to use it in our legion halls across Canada to honour our veterans. It's called Poppy Remembrance and can be found on her website. My grandfather is a veteran, he lives in Ottawa, so I asked him what his legion would think of having a quilt to hang in their hall. He spoke to their legion "boss" (I don't know what she's called) and she said she'd love to have one so I got busy making the quilt. I had it all pieced by mid-January but with the Cayman Island quilts to get finished it had to go on the back burner until those were done (customer quilts always come first!). Once I got them in the mail I got busy quilting this one and put the finishing touches on it on Friday. Yesterday it was mailed off to Ottawa to my grandfather. I took a couple of pictures of it before I popped it in the mail, I've asked him to get some of it once it's received and hung up. I don't have a lot of space for photographing large quilts, as you can see in the picture ... the couch and table are kind of in the way, but you get the idea. I used red quilting thread inside the poppies, green in the leaves and around the stems, then I quilted red maple leaves into the background.

This particular quilt was started after the shooting at Parliament Hill in the fall. A strong sense of patriotism came over me, and many others. I took solace from the news and this incomprehensible act in my studio. It was nice to reflect and find comfort in the act of sewing. This year happens to be the 50th anniversary of our Maple Leaf flag. With Canada Day coming it got me inspired to finish this quilt. Such a fun holiday, everyone is in such a good mood, there are barbecues and fireworks, and we are reminded at what a diverse and great population we have. It all seemed to be good motivation to finish the quilt top. Not only that, it was nice to finish the quilt with positive feelings, with joy in my heart not pain. Sewing can do that, turn your mood around. But the quilt can also hold your mood. Taking a break helps change that, if you want to do so. That was exactly why I took a break. The imagery of our flag is joyous to to me and while it gave me comfort to make the first few blocks, I wanted the final quilt to be happy. This version is a bit different too. Instead of making slabs and using those for the reds, I collected a bunch of different red fabrics. From flowers to geometrics to hockey themed fabric, it is all there. And because no two reds are the same, each block still looks distinct. I made it exactly the same size as my original Oh Canada quilt, which is a really good lap size. This is the Colorbrick Quilt from Stitched in Color. The prints are all Moda's Maison De Garance by French General and the solid is Kona Bone for the sashing, backing, and binding. I quilted it with organic straight lines. You can read more about it on my BLOG. Thanks for looking!
I have been rushing to finish my Oh Canada Quilt as tomorrow is Canada Day and happy to report I got the binding finished last night. I have admired this collection of fabrics for a long time, it is called Oh Canada, which is a Stonehenge collection by Northcott. I had not seen it made into a quilt that inspired me then I realized our Quarter Sections pattern would work perfectly and I’m very happy with the how it turned out. I bought 16 fat quarters of the collection, 13 different prints were used in all as I bought two fat quarters each of the red and black fabrics as well as the white Inuksuk print. I used the Maple Syrup panto which is so appropriate for this quilt! A beige So Fine thread, Quilters Dream Blend for batting, and Stonehenge backing. The sky is still very hazy here with all the forest fires in Northern Saskatchewan blowing their smoke this way. We have had a few good rains but it is still dry up here.
