Here are my first six blocks of Dear Jen by Jen Kingwell. Each one is 6" finished - so quite small. There's going to be six released every...
We are excited to feature a Q&A with celebrated quilter Jen Kingwell, whose recent book release is called "Quilt Lovely." Read on to hear what she has to say about choosing fabrics, hand vs. machine quilting and more! CF: You are a master at picking fabrics. What are your tips for pairing fabric prints? JK: I love color and print. When I start a project, I choose some core fabrics first. It doesn't bother me if these don't coordinate. I then start adding others that play well and this makes the collection much more cohesive. I usually make one block at a time and I constantly add more to the mix. More is better in my world. I love mixing all genres of fabrics. I would have great difficulty if I was only allowed to just use one. My fingers would itch to rummage in my stash. CF: Where do you find inspiration for your quilt patterns? JK: A lot of my designs are based on traditional block patterns. I then just tweak them or set them however I think looks appealing. I really do love most styles of quilts, but I guess vintage quilts are my favorite. CF: How do you prioritize time in your life to quilt and create? JK: Mmmm, interesting question. If you spoke to my family, they would probably say "sometimes not very well." Family comes first, but I'm extremely lucky that I get to stitch almost every day. I have a husband who is supportive of me and is happy to cook and help me to get things done and still meet deadlines (I guess he also subscribes to the "happy wife, happy life" theory). Stitching just makes me happy. My girls encourage me to do what I'm passionate about also. Over the years, I have realized that there are only 24 hours in a day, so there are things that sometimes just have to give. I have weeds in my garden and my windows might need a clean. My sewing room is rarely tidy. I will add that I am also a last-minute princess! I work well under pressure. Glitter Quilt CF: Can you talk about your love of hand quilting vs. machine quilting? JK: I have never enjoyed machine stitching when there is a large volume of fabric involved. I remember when I was trying to make curtains for our first home. Not something I look back on fondly! I just enjoy hand stitching in every way. It's therapeutic to me. I can feel stress drain from every pore in my body. When my daughters were smaller, I was working as a midwife. In the evenings I wanted to be present and listen to stories about their day. Hand stitching was the solution. I could be doing what I loved and be part of family life. My machine was always set up in another room and to machine stitch removed me from this. I do machine piece, but in my perfect world I would hand stitch everything. Jen Kingwell is the author of "Quilt Lovely: 15 Vibrant Projects Using Piecing and Appliqué" (Fons & Porter/F+W; $26.99).
Hello everyone! A few weeks ago, our friend Jen Kingwell from "down under" visited the FQS Studio to film some amazing tutorials just for you! Today,
Tonight was the fundraising event where my Flutterby quilt (based on the Jen Kingwell pattern in the Quilt Lovely book) was auctioned off to raise money for Project Horizon, a non-profit organization in Lexington, VA (my old stomping grounds) dedicated to reducing domestic and sexual violence in the area. I've donated items before for the silent auction and brought in a couple hundred dollars, but this year, they wanted my quilt to be in the live auction. I was super nervous - was my quilt good enough for the big leagues? This is what it looked like when it left my house as a flimsy. One of my friends from my old quilt guild volunteered to quilt it on her long-arm machine. She also added the binding by machine. My friend who attended the fundraiser (which is a fabulous dinner and dancing plus silent auction and live auction) videotaped the auctioning of the quilt for me. I was on pins and needles watching. Nine hundred and fifty dollars!?! I'll be honest - I started to cry. I'm so humbled. I hope that whoever won the bid loves the quilt and that it brings him/her many years of comfort and warmth. And, more importantly, I hope that the money it raised helps someone make a new, violence-free start in her life.
On Sunday night, about a week before Christmas Eve, I decided that I should make my sweet neighbor girl a quilt for her 18th birthday. It was a crazy idea, no doubt, but I forged ahead anyway. I'm not sure that I would recommend making a quilt in such a hurry the week before Christmas ever again, but I'm glad that I managed to pull it off. A deadline is a good thing! I gifted it to her on her birthday, which is on Christmas Eve. She was very surprised and loved it, which made it all worth it. I have heard reports that she's been using it a lot already. Hurray! I made the label and THEN pieced it into the backing. I loved that method....because as soon as the binding was done, the quilt was done, done, done. Can't beat that! The blocks are 9" finished. Each rail was cut 3 1/2" x 9 1/2". All the top and binding fabric and some of the backing fabric was from my stash. (woohoo!) The quilt finishes about 63" x 81". And now, for something completely different..... My husband took some time over Christmas break to finish his Batman latch hook project. He is pretty sure that he got it for Christmas in 1978, making it a 40 year WIP. Hahahahahaha! I love that he actually took time to finish it, although we aren't sure where to put it now. :) He finished it for an honorary finish it up Friday project. Isn't that adorable??? I snapped a pic of him showing my boys how to latch hook, which was beyond precious. I give him 5 gold stars for his finish. I've been looking back and it's been quite a year! I don't have a ton of accomplishments to highlight, but it's been a good year nonetheless. I did a fair amount of teaching/speaking and I did a decent amount of quilt making. Most importantly, I feel like I was able to be more PRESENT with my family this year than I have been in the past. It isn't always easy, but it's always worth it! -I completed 14 quilts this year, which feels pretty reasonable. Out of those 14, 8 were primarily from the stash, 4 were primarily from scraps, and 2 used fairly equal amounts of scraps and stash. (The geeky side of me loves to see the breakdown of the finishes in this way. Always interesting!) -I had a goal to use more stash this year, and I think I accomplished that. Hurray! I also added a lot to the stash, because I'm still living and breathing. Hahahahaha! It's just the way things go! -I worked on several scrap quilts this year, too, but most of them are pretty intense, so they will take a lot of work to finish. I usually enjoy the process, so it's all good! -I made the decision to wrap up my business this year, which was HUGE. (You can read more about that here, if you missed the announcement.) It was a very hard decision to make, and I'm sure I'll be dealing with the emotions of that for months to come. Change has always been difficult for me, so I shouldn't be surprised....but here's to the next chapter, whatever it may bring! This is extremely difficult and very bittersweet, so I'll make it quick and to the point. Thank you for being a part of this amazing ride. It's been unbelievable. I loved being a part of your lives. Thank you for reading. Thank you for your comments. Thank you for all of your support over the years. I'll forever be grateful. For one last time.... Happy Monday to you! xoxox

It's been a while but it's all ready to go. LONG TIME GONE is the name of the 2016 program. This reflects the years I lived in the Middle East and the fact that this poor quilt was "lost" twice. Packed in the container it had a slow trip back home then was packed in a box when I moved house!! It's one for machine lovers and all the details can be found at http://www.amitie.com.au/fabric-clubsbom.htm As you can see it's a little breezy here today

Then there was opened for an inspiration evening with Jen’s Show and Tell. Several girls had made some of Jen’s quilts and the show and tell started with showing these quilts. I am sorry I do not remember who have made these quilts. So just enjoy the photos: Finally it was time for Jen to show her quilts. As you see there is a big pile of quilts. She is a lovely inspiring lady. Love her way of using all kind of fabrics together. When making a scrappy quilt you really do not have to think that this fabric goes with this fabric to make perfect blocks. Everything goes together. And as me she LOVES circles. That is one shape that makes me smile. Enjoy the photos from Show and Tell. The first part is the quilts that there is separate patterns or booklets. (And I know Kathrine is having all of Jen’s patterns and templates, so if there is something that just calls on you…..give Kathrine a call). Now there was time to show the quilts from her book Quilt Lovely. One of my favorite books. I have no idea how many time I have looked through this book. Think I want to make all of the quilts and the pillows. I had a wonderful day filled with inspiration, laughter and good friends. I look a bit tired at this photo with Jen, but it had been a very long intense day (up at 06:00 and this photo was taken by 21:30, back home by midnight driving in heavy rain, but it was SO worth it). I am so happy to have met Jen in person and I know I will have a lot of scrappy time in my sewing room. This is the Daisy Do quilt that we started to make and the more I see it, the more I love it. Now my head is spinning filled with inspiration, colours and shapes. Thank you Jen for all the inspiration.
For those of you on Instagram, you may have seen the recent buzz about a new quilt-along. There are a team of us- John, Cindy, Megan, Danielle, Lisa and me hosting a quilt-along for Jen Kingwell's wonderful 'My Small World' quilt. The quilt-along doesn't kick off properly until May 18th but there are a lot of questions being posted so I thought it best to answer some here. This is the quilt we will all be making, it measures 33" x 52". It is the perfect scrappy project. I will be making mine from my stash including the tiniest of scraps. You can find it in the Quiltmania Spring Special 2015. There is no issue number as it is a special seasonal issue. You can flick through the magazine at Quiltmania. I cannot find it for sale digitally as a single issue. Where you find the magazine depends on the county you are in. In the UK it can be found at: Some branches of WHSmiths Some quilt shops and newsagents- those that already stock Quiltmania publications Online at The Contented Cat. They will also send overseas- a possible option for European quilters. Online at Coast and Country Crafts. One copy left at the time of writing! Online at The Running Chicken. Listed here, new copies arriving 8th May and they will send overseas. Online at Newstand, a couple of copies left here For Europe (and elsewhere) Quiltmania website available in English and French. They send anywhere in the world. In USA Joanns Barnes & Noble Online at Happiness is Quilting (currently showing out of stock so email to check) Quilter's Paradise has copies online/instore Online at My Primitive Gathering- watch out for the shipping price, one buyer reported it as $9 in USA Online at Olive Grace Studios (the designer of the cover quilt). Australia/New Zealand Order from local newsagent Minerva in NZ Online at Sewn and Quilted If you know of any stockists not mentioned, please let me know and I'll add them to the list. The quilt-along doesn't start May 18th to give participants a change to buy the magazine. The first post will be a general introduction about fabric choices and any planned changes like making a bigger quilt. The first construction post will not be until 25th May. As the pattern is in six parts there will be six construction posts with a different host leading each one, plus a final post near the end of September to wrap things up so the pace is going to be gentle. This is a detailed quilt which uses a lot of templates so not something to rush! It can be made by machine or by hand or a combination of the two. If you would like a button for your blog or other social media, here a range of sizes to choose from! Here is a mini 125 size blog button; scroll, copy and paste the html code to use: Here is a larger 200 size blog button, scroll, copy and paste as before. Here is a supersize 300 version! Scroll and paste like before. If you haven't done a quilt-along before, think of it as a support group so that a group of people all over the world can make the same quilt in their own way and enjoy a bit of camaraderie, guidance and assistance where needed. You can decide your own fabrics and adaptations. It is not a beginner easy pattern, it does involve a lot of templates and a lot of the pieces are small but it should be relatively straightforward! Hopefully, we will inspire you and give you some tips on skills and techniques during the construction. We will not be giving lots of details and measurements from the pattern as you need to buy the Spring Special to take part but we will be sharing info on things like curved piecing, appliqué and alternatives, English Paper Piecing and much more. Jen Kingwell has given us her blessing and will be watching progress on Instagram. I'll be posting regularly here and have designated a blog page to store all the info. Much of the action will also take place on Instagram. The hashtag is #mysmallworldqal. The quilt-long hosts are @verykerryberry @liveacolorfullife @lucyandnorman, @j_q_adams, @vintagemodernquilts @petitselefants and you can tag us if you have anything to ask or show us.
Hand quilting joins the quilt top, batting and backing layers. Both tiny stitches and big stitches are okay! By hand quilting, the quilt has a softer feel.

Today, Karen from CapitolaQuilter, is sharing her tutorial about how to make giant x and + blocks. I am sure you have all seen these blocks and the wonderful resulting quilts around the internet. Karen's tutorial walks us through the details of making these popular blocks in super size and she includes directions for making a bunch of bonus HSTs too. I can't wait to give these a try, I bet you will want to too. Read on. Giant x and + Block This Tutorial variation was inspired by: Amy/badskirt 8" which she credits inspiration to Setsuko Inagawa's quilt and original block attributed to Nancy Cabot. Brenda/Just a Bit Frayed 12.5" Rossie/Fresh Modern Quilts Mega xPlus flickr group Japanese + and X along Me & My Mixed Scale xPlus Top 12.5" blocks Mixed with 24" blocks A few weeks ago my picture caught a lot of attention on flickr and comments on a recent blog post so when Leanne at She Can Quilt invited me to be part of the FAL Q3 Guest Tutorials, it was perfect timing. I've only written a tutorial twice before; Polaroids and Tassels and have never been a guest blogger - so if all of this seems a bit rough around the edges you'll know why! Thanks for having me, Karen 24" Block Cut List: Plus Center = Two 4.5"x 4.5"and One 4.5"x12.5" Plus End Tabs = Two 6.5"x 4.5" and Two 4.5"x6.5" (or Four 4.5"x 6.5 if non-directional) Background = Eight 6.5"x6.5" X = Four different fabrics, each 10.5"x10.5" (fussy and non-fussy instructions given below), all seams 1/4, all seams ironed open. the FABRIC Grouping Audition and Decide on Fabric Placement The look of the block varies greatly based on your choices, so have fun deciding what goes where! Another Fabric Grouping Sample Take a picture for reference later, especially if you are chain sewing several blocks at the same time. the PLUS Plus Center Cut Two 4.5"x 4.5" and One 12.5"x4.5" for the Plus from the same fabric. Above you can see a fussy and a non-fussy version. Plus Ends Cut Two 4.5"x6.5" and Two 6.5"x4.5" for the Plus End Tabs of the same fabric if your fabric is directional like the sample below. Later, you'll also need to pay attention to orientation during assembly OR you can cut Four 4.5"x6.5 of non-directional fabric stacked like the picture above. the FUSSY X Using a 12.5" square ruler, cut a visual guide out of tracing paper 5.5" wide. Draw a line down the center. Place it on the mat using the 45 degree line & vertical reference (see arrows). Cut one tip. Cut the First Guide Tip Reposition the ruler on the tracing paper at the 10.5" line shown below with red arrows and at the center line on the guide shown below with a green circle. Cut the second tip. Remember that this is not a cutting template, but rather a visual guide for the X portion of the block. Cut the Second Guide Tip Mark the center of the guide and tape it to your ruler. Play around with the fabric pattern repeats until you find what you like. Because the block is Jumbo, you can highlight special larger scale prints. Cut the two sides where your tracing paper is at the ruler edge, shown at the top of the photo above. Reposition the ruler and cut the other two sides to get a fussy 10.5"x 10.5" square. the NON-Fussy X option Cut a stack of 10.5" squares. I prefer the look of mixing fussy and non fussy x segments together. the BACKGROUND Cut Eight 6.5"x6.5" Background. For a high contrast, pick something that is similar to your Plus Center fabric and different from your X and Plus Ends fabric since they will touch. Draw a line down the center of the wrong side of the background squares tip to tip and another 1/2" from it on the outer side only. These will be your STITCH lines. Align the background squares with the edge of the x square and put one pin where they overlap and one pin near each outer point to help keep things in place. Chain piece all of the center lines on one side, then the center lines on the other side. Do the same for the outer lines. Easy as 1, 2, 3, 4. The bonus half square triangle are well worth the second pass because they're so large. Cut 1/4" from the center line right between the two stitch lines. Here are the X parts once the background bonus half square triangles have been trimmed off. Press seams open being careful not to stretch or distort the square because they are now on the bias. Close Up on one fussy cut X segment: the ASSEMBLY Sew a 6.5"x4.5" Plus End to the left and right of the Plus Center 4.5"x12.5". Sew a 4.5"x6.5" Plus End to the Plus Center 4.5"4.5" and repeat to make two. Refer to the numbers and picture above, pressing open seams between each step: Sew an x segment to each side of the vertical Plus, repeat to make two. Sew the horizontal seams #3 & #4 and you're done! During the final assembly steps I pin the ends and along the joints but I don't stress about perfect joints. the BONUS HSTs Measuring just shy of 6", these are totally usable parts for another project and you get eight from each block with little extra effort. I will probably clean up them to 5.5" before sewing them together. the SAMPLES Sample of a lower contrast background. Sample of using all very similar X and Plus Ends Four 12.5" blocks sewn together join nicely to the 24" blocks. Another shot of my Mixed Scale xPlus Top And thank you Karen! Don't forget to link up your Q3 finishes - the Q3 post-quarter link is open here and it will close at midnight MST, October 7, 2013. And if you still have some UFOs I hope you will join us for Q4 of the FAL, Q4 FAL lists can be posted starting on October 8.

Time to prep some more hexes for my Smitten. When I first started this Smitten way back in March - Fussy cutting wasn't really a thought for how I wanted to create my Hexies. I purchased Fat 1/16ths for this quilt and of course this meant that the pieces were not big enough for fussy cutting. However as I continued on I knew that I had to add some Fussy Cutting in somewhere in my quilt. I raided my stash and found some fabrics that would just be perfect for fussy cutting with pattern repeats and large enough pieces to cut out large holes into the fabric to make these hexies. With some careful cutting and stitching I am stoked with how these fussy cut hexes turned out and can't wait to add them in. Heading towards the home stretch for the piecing for this Quilt - these Small Hexagons took a little time to cut and piece with the size of the smaller diamonds and triangles that make these up. These hexes came together really quickly with only three diamonds per hexagon. With all the small hexagons complete it was time to hand stitch them together to make them into Large Hexagons. After some sorting, arranging and cutting of certain prints and fabrics to make each hexagon the right colour way I have made great progress on these Large Hexagons. Each one I make becomes my new favourite. So close to having these all pieced. Happy Sewing Jemima x
