The May block is now available. I told you it would be blooming with cuteness. I'm combining two of my favorite things here, sewing and flowers. April showers bring May flowers! Have you ever heard of that saying? I'm sure you have. I knew May would be the perfect month to include flowers in our Year of Spools series. I just love how the spools create flower pots for the blooming flowers. I will film the Sew Bloomy tutorial in the next few days and get the tutorial out as soon as I can. This one

I cannot believe it has been a year since I started this BOM! My first full-length BOM finished, and most certainly not my last. The funny thing is, I love these blocks so much. I love the colours and the great mix of block designs. Why so funny? Because half of the prints I used […]

Hurrah! Hazah! Hallelujah! and any other ah! I feel as though I've waited so long for March - about 28 days ;)... and now - here it is....... Today's focus will be on our "In the Garden" block of the month. I've lined up for you all - a 'cute little birdhouse' sitting in a tree. The pattern also measures 12" or 12.5" unfinished. I've been a little worried that some of our beginners might feel this is a little hard - so I made another block - also of the birdhouse but without so many background details like the branches or the leaves. It really is up to you which one you decide to put together. They will both be in my Craftsy shop - free for March. Here is the pattern pieces laid out on my desk - I've moved to a bigger desk - Thank Heavens! and I divide up the pieces not only according to how they will be put together, but also group them into pieces that I want to do each day. I don't try to do everything at once - back will not be happy,...... Here is all the segments that will eventually be sewn together. Only on the last leaf I decided to make it yellow instead of green and then realized that I could have done a lot more with that. Never mind - you can do anything you like. Here is a closer look at the little bird ornament on the house. Mine is just off by a few millimeters and only afterwards I was thinking about it and I should have lined it up from the bird perch first and not from the edge of the pattern ...... i also make mistakes......... No harm! Here is my completed block of the cute "Birdhouse". I think it turned out well!!! These are the blocks we have so far. Really cute already!! I hope you're all itching to get stitching!! Available in my Craftsy shop, links also in the PP BoM page, and also feel free to use that page to link up your block photos. Our Flickr group is also growing - Thank you to all who have linked up. I love looking at your work. Other news: Yesterday, I found that the 'hummingbird' has a glitch in the numbering. The feet are numbered all haywire. The small pieces are supposed to follow one another and then the bigger piece which is now as #4. Sorry about that - I will be removing the pattern and editing it before putting it back onto Craftsy. If you find something like this, please feel free to send me an email and let me know. Thanks. Today is also our first piece in our 12 week Quilt-a-Long. Details are on the Art Quilt Page. You can post your photos to the Flickr group also - ;) Button also on side bar. Anyone still want to join us? There's still enough time. This is my first block - measures roughly 12" (30cm). Have a great week-end. Monday will be the day for our HST BoM.
Can you believe it? It's already February..... This year is already in a hurry... For all those excited Paper Piecing Enthusiasts ..... Here is our next installment of "In the Garden" Block of the Month. First up - The Humming bird This cute little block is on a Easy Level and does not have a ton of tiny pieces. I cut out my pattern pieces, laid them out to get a visual idea of what I need to do, then I wrote onto the pieces which colour I was going to need to use (Segment A, #1=Beige, #2=Darker Beige and so on) This was so that I could not get confused later. I sew up and make each segment finished first and then I start sewing them together according to the instruction sheet (to see if I told you to do it right) and this was the end result..... This little bird is so cute. The block is 12" (30cm) Do not forget that in paper piecing you get a mirrored effect - that's why he faces the opposite way in the end. Second block - The Hibiscus flower (we need to make 2 blocks this month because we need to be finished with them by September, so now and in July we will be doing a little extra work) For the flower I used batik fabrics to get a variagated look on the petals. Again I make all my segments first and then start putting them together. It sometimes feels like I'm making a puzzle and can only see the picture when I'm done. This block is also 12" (30cm) and on the Easy Level. Here are both of my blocks for February. As you can see I'm using the same fabric for all my blocks' backgrounds. I really need to work on putting up a 'design wall' - a place where you can leave the blocks up and get a visual of what you're doing and can arrange them. The photos I take are with my iPhone, so sorry about the quality. Only camera I have. I think when the design wall is up, I will take some new photos. Some of the photos I have make it seem that I work in the dark and the flash just - well, what can I say..... LOL! I will be putting up NEW LINKS to each block from now on - some of you have mentioned that you can't find them - sorry about that - I didn't even think of that, so nice advice. Thanks. Links will be in the PP BoM Page at the top of the blog that will take you directly to the blocks in my Craftsy shop or you can just click the link that you see on any of the posts - Craftsy and you will go to the shop in general. There will also be a "Link-Up" for your finished blocks on the PP BoM Page (top of blog). Also ....... Please add your new photos to the Flickr group. Button on right side bar. Hope You have lots of FUN!

What quilting skills intimidate you? There are some techniques that have a reputation for being hard, even if they're actually pretty simple, and the partial seam definitely falls into that category. It sounds confusing and scary, but I promise it's not! Gaye Glasspie (ggmadeit on Instagram) has a saying I love, "It's not hard, it's new." Isn't that a great shift in perspective? I'm excited to open the Stash Artists membership for Founding Members on Tuesday, June 27th (get on the waiting list, to be sure you don't miss it!), and Reverberate will be the first pattern available to members. The Reverberate block goes together with a partial seam, so this seemed like a great opportunity to share a tutorial. Let's dive in! I'll be sharing my full Reverberate cover quilt soon, but after a friend suggested the Reverberate block would look great with bright stars on a black background, I had to give it a try! I love it as much as I thought I would, so making more blocks has been added to my 'someday' list. That list never grows shorter, no matter how many quilts I make, and that actually makes me happy. I love knowing I'll never run out of things to make. Here are the units for my Reverberate block. You can see how it wouldn't be possible to put the block together with normal seams, since all of the outside pieces are longer than the center square. This is the same problem you'll see with any block that needs a partial seam, and the method for assembling the block will always be the same. So these steps apply to any block with a partial seam, not just the Reverberate block! Starting with the unit on the top of the block, sew the first couple inches of the seam, backstitching a couple stitches where you stop. Press that portion of the seam open. Now we'll add the unit on the left. With the first part of the top seam sewn, the left side of the center square unit is now the same length as the outside unit, so we can sew this seam normally. Press the seam open. Add the bottom unit the same way. And then the unit on the right. Now it's time to finish the top seam. Fold the top unit down so the raw edge lines up. Start stitching where you stopped earlier, overlapping the stitches slightly, and backstitching again to secure those first stitches. Then just stitch the rest of the seam. Press the seam open, and your block is finished! I hope you'll give partial seams a try, and discover just how doable they are! Remember, "It's not hard, it's new!"
