When I realize that I have brought something new into the world, I can tell myself again that I am not a fraud. In this piece I am using a combination of two opposites, the seductive and the repulsive, to create something new. It's not a story cloth really. There is no meaning other than an artwork charged with energy. My thoughts come and go so quickly yet the work progresses slowly. I'm faster than me. The threads and fabrics are familiar things used in an unfamiliar way. What is usually used to make a neat seam or a mended pocket, is used here in a messy and raveled manner. An affront to what is expected, but like a storm we want to watch, it gives a bit of a thrill. We want to touch it to see if it's true. The work starts to invent itself. It's not that I lose control, but things happen that although interesting are not my original idea. It's as if I'm ordered to do something that doesn't come from me. In this piece I am working from the back, which gives me some control. There has to be order, even though I am using cut bits of threads and frayed cloth which are couched and then covered with snugly pulled running stitch. I am always working from both sides. beautiful - ugly control - lack of control shape - line order - chaos front - back fast - slow Working with opposites is what drives me to continue with the making over a period of months. For me it's exciting to see the messiness under my control. Untidiness is the subject. That's interesting. The smoother side is a bit too charming, but it is the result of that raw inner making. I try to give my work that extra edge.

Did I hear a moan? Many of us love the look of the French Knot but have struggled to master this stitch but once you get the hang of it, the possibilities are endless. It is a wonderful stitch for adding a three dimensional look to a pattern that might otherwise appear flat and it is also great for mimicking the natural elements of nature. Instructions for making for making a French Knot: 1. Bring the thread out at the required position, hold the thread down where it emerges with the left thumb and encircle the thread twice with the needle (see A). 2. Still holding the thread firmly with your thumb, twist the needle back to the starting point and insert it close to where the thread first emerged (not in the exact place or it will simply pull back through). 3. Pull the needle through to the back, leaving a small knot on the surface, as shown, or pass on to the position of the next stitch as at B. There is also an extremely helpful video tutorial at Needle N' Thread demonstrating how to make the French Knot. Watching the stitch in action will definitely help in making written instructions comprehensible. So grab a piece of scrap fabric and practice the French Knot. Once you get the hang of it, you will be adding it to all of your embroidered designs!

Stitching lace insertion to fabric is the first technique that we learn when I teach heirloom sewing by machine. This is not a strong application of lace and best used on collars, yokes, or sleeves. Lace insertion is the lace that is straight on both edges. If one side of the lace feels rougher than the other, this is the wrong side of the lace. I have used a contrasting color thread for the photos. Use a fine machine thread that matches the lace and a 60/8 size machine needle. Starch and press the lace and fabric. Using a wash-away marker, mark the lace placement lines on the fabric. Set the sewing machine on straight stitch length of 2.0 and stitch close to the edge of the lace down both sides. I prefer to stitch from top to bottom each time to prevent the fabric and lace from distorting. Turn the fabric to the wrong side, and carefully cut the fabric between the stitching lines, being careful not to cut the lace. Press the fabric away from the lace. On the right side of the fabric, using a zigzag stitch of 2.0 width and 0.7 length, stitch over the previous stitching line. The stitch should "zig" into the lace and "zag" into the fabric. On the wrong side of the fabric, using blunt scissors, trim away the excess fabric. Starch and press the fabric and lace before continuing with your garment. I first started doing heirloom sewing about 15 years ago while doing custom sewing for "Joy's of Smocking" in Decatur, AL. I still love working with lace and fabric!

Have you ever heard of chain piecing? What about chain piecing your rows? This is probably my BEST tip for quilting, especially for my Vintage Lace Quilt pattern or really any other pattern that has vertical and horizontal rows. It makes things super organized and efficient, which lets you have quicker finish. It leaves less room for error, since you are creating the same row over and over again and overall, I think it's a lot of fun. I think you'll like this method, too! Let's jump in! . VINTAGE LACE Like I said, I originally wrote this tutorial for my Vintage Lace (seen above), because the construction is so much more efficient than sewing each panel together one at a time. If you are looking to use this method for Vintage Lace, then instead of chain piecing the rows of your panels (Rows 1-6) x 8 , you'll chain piece all of your Row 1s, then all of your Row 2s, then so on. Keep reading and it'll make a little more sense! . VIDEO TUTORIAL Here's a video of the entire process. Keep scrolling for written instructions! . HOW TO CHAIN PIECE ROWS: I'm revisiting this tutorial to adapt it to my FREE Patchwork Squares quilt pattern which will be available next week! This pattern is just squares, so it's super beginner friendly and easy to sew together. It get's even quicker and easier if you use this method! So here's what you'll do: 1. Layout all of your pieces in the segment that you are creating. Make sure that there is an even mix of your fabrics, or if you are using a specific pattern, make sure that everything is in it's proper position and rotated correctly. . 2. Place your first and second pieces of the beginning of each row right sides together. Then, starting with the first two pieces, stack them on the next two pieces and then so on to create a pile. Set that beside your sewing machine. . . . . . 3. Then create a second pile of the remaining squares in this segment. Starting in the top left corner again, place the first square on top of the square directly below it. Then place those two squares on top of the third square directly below them. Continue to stack that column until you get to the bottom, then bring them up to the top of the next column and continue to stack them. NOTE: it's very important that they stay in the correct order and do not accidentally become rotated (if direction matters in the quilt that you are creating). . . . . . 4. So now you have 2 different piles. Starting with the first pile, sew the first two squares together using a 1/4

Hi there! I hope you are all enjoying your weekend! Today I have a darling zipper pouch to show you guys! :) About a week ago, we got in these adorable lace zippers! I could NOT wait to use these beauties!! They are so fun, and make using zippers even easier in my opinion :) These zippers just add a delicate touch to any zipper pouch. They are easy to use, and come in a variety of colors! You can find the zippers we have in the shop in our notions section right HERE! I couldn't make just one of these lovelies, I have made four so far, and I am definitely not done! I will be making some boxed pouches next! :) Alright, let's make one together! Update: This post has become so popular, I have done some updating. I have added a chart with different size options, these sizes reflect the picture below: Supplies for a small pouch: 7" x 15" piece of Exterior Fabric 7" x 15" piece of lining 7 " x 15" piece of fusible fleece 1 exposed lace zipper (8 inch) coordinating thread Step 1: Line your exterior piece with interfacing, and then sew the exterior and the interior piece together right sides together. Sew along the two short edges, so that you will make a tube. Step 2: Turn right side out and press. Step 3: Place the zipper on the exterior side with the zipper pull up. Pin into place and then sew the zipper tape on to one of the short sides. (use coordinating thread so that you won't see your stitches) Step 4: Now attach the other side of the zipper to the other short end of your fabric. This is going to be kind of tricky. You will want to unzip your zipper so that you can stitch this on. The key is to go slow, and be patient. I also found that using my zipper foot was very helpful in doing this step. Step 5: Turn inside out, and align your zipper so that it is where you want it to be on the front. I placed mine 2" down. I thought that seemed like a nice spot for the zipper to be on my pouch. Pin along the sides, and then sew the sides shut. Make sure you open your zipper part way, otherwise you won't be able to turn right side out! :) Trim off the excess a 1/4" from the edge, and then do a zig-zag stitch to finish your edges. Step 6: Turn right side out! And that's it my friends! You have an adorable zip pouch! These sew up so quickly, you'll make a dozen before you know it! :) Well, I think I am off to make some more! :) Talk to you soon,
