This past weekend, I headed out of town for a change in the usual routine, to Minnowbrook Conference Center, Blue Mountain Lake in New York's beautiful Adirondack Mountains, to be specific! Here's a quick review in photos. It doesn't take long for quilters to create a home away from home. Sewing machines, patterns, notions, fabrics and way too many projects come out of boxes and bags to create a happy chaos at each table. A quiet moment; creativity awaits. Pam looks up from her purple and taupe piecing. And the sewing begins. Looky-looky! "Feedsack Peaks" from Cut the Scraps! Quilter-Janet is a little camera-shy. Sharon at the design wall. Blocks get set in the perfect arrangement, carefully planned. Kathy made this two-color block from a paper-pieced pattern by Carol Doak. Laura is making this Irish Chain quilt for her mom. A touch of Piping Hot Binding was just the ticket to frame the center medallion. Lynn and her sister Tammy enjoyed some family time. This is Tammy's very first quilt. Lynn is an accomplished teacher - didn't they both do a great job, teacher and student? Pat made a Snap Sack Quilt, "Harvest Tradition." My table mate, Gail completed a small quilt top with these colorful squares. Pretty! Inspired by my surroundings, I brought a woodsy toss print fabric and my scraps, of course! What's this going to be? You'll have to wait to find out! Sunset over Blue Mountain Lake Magically, at the end of the weekend, all the colorful fabrics and creative energy are stored away for another sewing session on a new day. All is secured safely for the drive home. All cleared away. Just for a short while, it's nice to get away and just sew. Until next time . . . Joan

Hello Everyone, An absolutely delightful group of women gathered together at Friends Around the Block in Colusa last Saturday for my Heritage class. By the end of class, the girls had some beautiful blocks completed. I can't wait to go back and see everyone again. The magic begins when the pieces are placed on the block layout sheet which is included in each pattern. (Unless my pattern stuffer, Mr. Joe, forgets to put one in!) The dynamic mother-daughter duo went to town on their blocks. I love seeing this quilt made in blue! Sharon has an eye for detail in her log cabin blocks. Working with directional fabrics in a Log Cabin block on point, can be a bit tricky. All of the blocks were so different and so beautiful! Here are my scrappy blocks that I made before class. My new version is going to look so different from the original. I find that when I make my patterns in an alternative colorway, the pattern has a longer shelf life......especially if I make a scrappy version. I may, just may, have to tear myself away from my quilt show preparations and make one more block today. I find them so addictive, that I can't make just one! Here's the original Heritage. The pattern is available in my Etsy shop. During class, Mary showed us a quilt top she just completed. This quilt uses Rachael Remembered fabrics. Love the quilt, the fabrics, and her precision. Gail and I had a delightful time at Friends Around the Block in Colusa. Let me tell all of you that this shop is well worth a road trip. The shop is packed full of goodies and fabrics that I haven't seen in other shops. Carol, the owner, and the staff are just delightful. (Note to self.......when we go back to Colusa during duck hunting season, I must remember to pack my camouflage outfit.....especially if we go back to Rocco's on the River for their delicious fish tacos!) Soon, Lynn

Here are the last 3 blocks in my quilt guild's Block of the Month. These blocks make up the bottom row of the pattern, Jeni Baker's Half Square Triangle Sampler: Now I need to choose a background. I wanted to go with a colored fabric, rather than the white as shown in the pattern, and I thought I had found the perfect green: I put the first 9 blocks against the green background and lived with it for a while as I made the last 3 blocks. I began to think that although the green was a perfect match, it was overpowering the blocks. These blocks are only 6 inches, so the background has a bigger impact. I went back to the drawing board and found a lighter, less saturated green and tried again: It's a subtle difference, but I think the second choice helps the blocks stand out a little more. Here are the two fabrics side by side: And here are the 12 finished blocks, with the darker green background under the top 6 and the lighter green background under the bottom 6: This has been a lot of fun seeing how much variety can be achieved with just 16 Half Square Triangle blocks.

Colour Blocking is a design of mine intended to be used with the 7 half-yard bundles that I feature on my personal website (www.quiltersdreamfabrics.com). To make this quilt, just choose a background of your choice (2 yd)... then choose any of the bundles I sell with 7 half-yard cuts. This throw sized quilt is a doable project for a careful beginner quilter, or it can be the "need it soon" project for a more experienced quilter. The large half-circles (12 1/2" cut, 12" finished) are easy to sew (and quick also!) Templates are provided for the half-circles and the half-circle holes, although you can use your own ruler if you have one that cuts 12 1/2" diameter half-circles and 11 1/2" half-circles. The technique described in the pattern avoids any significant wasted fabric and ensures your half-circles are properly shaped half-circles. The design has a bit of a mid-century modern vibe... brought to you by this mid-century modern lady. Instructions are included for two optional layouts. The nature of this design makes it easy for you to personalize the layout and create your own unique design. This is also a great stash-buster design. The quilt finishes at 60" x 72". It is a great size for use as a throw on a couch or chair, or as an accent piece in a bedroom. The clean lines create a quilt that fits comfortably in a contemporary decor.
As a quilter, quilt blocks are one of the easiest patterns you can make. In this post, we've collected 12-inch quilt block patterns for you to try.
The end of the year is coming fast, so I have been evaluating my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts to determine which I want to finish and which I want to carry into next year. One of the RSC quilts I have been working on is the simple color block quilt made with 2.5" squares. For October, I made a couple brown blocks. I knew I needed some red blocks - so I went ahead and finished up three from squares that I had already cut and were in my stash. A couple of yellow blocks were needed too. At this point, I knew I was pretty close to having enough blocks to finish the quilt. When I moved the blocks from my quilting studio to my sewing room, I knew I needed more green blocks so I went ahead and made a few of them. So here is what I have so far. I still need to sew up two more blocks and adjust the layout a bit. I think I need another dark blue and maybe a pink. Hmmm.....What do you think? ********************************************* It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps.
