Quilts made with disappearing blocks are intriguing—and oh-so-fun! But just what are they and how are they made?
Christy Jr made this quilt for her daughter, Elly, and it was so much fun to make we had to share! The pattern is from Missouri Star, and is called the Disappearing Four Patch. All you need are your standard rulers, rotary cutter, iron, sewing machine, and five inch charm squares. We used Fossil Fern Quilting Squares and Cotton Supreme Optical White (but there are lots of charm square options out there!). See the photo tutorial below of how me made our quilt! The blocks are sewn together, ironed, then trimmed to nine inches. Then the block is cut into three inch pieces and the outer center pieces are rotated one position clockwise. Then the pieces are sewn back together as a whole block. A major part of the "look" for this quilt was a color gradient, so we spent a fair amount of time arranging and re-arranging the squares before settling on a final layout. Since we didn't really plan out the squares ahead of time, we ended up making a few extra blocks that helped transition colors. For example, there's a block with a yellow bottom and orange top, and another with a pink top and dark bottom. All in all, this was a blast to piece together. We added borders, and quilted with our popular West Wind at Night Edge-to-Edge. As you can see, the stars add a lot of fun and flavor to the quilt, and the swirls provide good coverage and movement! And here's the happy recipient of the quilt getting cozy before a little nap! Sew a disappearing pinwheel quilt block. Sew it, cut it and sew it again for a new surprise quilt block. Easy and quick!
This is one of my favorite quick quilts and a great beginner quilt to learn on. This quilt finished at 36" x 48", but can be made different sizes very easily. You will need 9 charm squares (5' x 5" squares) per 4 - 6" blocks. I made 12 - 9 patch blocks. which was 108 charm squares. When the 9 patches are cut up and resewed together the blocks will finish at 12". 1. Sew your charm squares together into a 9 patch (3 x 3). The corners will be the whole squares so if you have big prints you want to showcase that where to put them. Press the seams open, a little Best Press wouldn't hurt since these blocks are going to be cut up again. This 9 Patch will measure 14" x 14". 2. Cut the block in half both horizontally and vertically. Use the seams as guides to get the exact center (thanks to my friend Gail for the reminder), measuring 2.25" from each of the center seams. Cut into 4 pieces. 3. You will have 4 - 6.5" squares that look like this 4. Now comes the fun part. Once you have all of your blocks cut lay them out in a pleasing manner and remember to mix them up (meaning you don't have to keep the pieces cut from the same 9 patch together), the skies the limit here. You can have them all going the same direction like this Or so that no seams have to match (this is a great layout to learn on) Or in a different pattern such as this. It's called top right, bottom left (for lack of better words). This is how I learned. 5. Then simply sew your blocks together in rows and then the rows together. 6. Even since I saw Steffani's St Louis 16 patch quilt on her blog, I have been smitten. I am not sure if it is the richness of the colours, the gorgeous AMH fabrics, the purples (I adore purple!) or what it is, but I knew I wanted to make one too. Source : sewwithsass.blogspot.com I didn't jump on the bandwagon when it was first doing the rounds of Flickr and Instagram as the time wasn't right, but I had the urge to cut into my Chicopee last week. This is one of my favourite Denyse Schmidt ranges and I think it is the rich colours of the reds, the oranges, pinks and blues that just sang to me. I started off with just 4 blocks to see if I liked the look of them. They stitched up so easily. Seriously, Steffani's tutorial is incredibly easy to follow. I mixed the Chicopee with some Hope Valley and some older ranges of DS fabrics that I have been hoarding waiting for the right quilt to come along. I loved the look of these so continued until I had 22. Was going to go for a 5 x 6 layout but it would have been for one mother of a quilt! Will pop the extra 2 on the back. Ever wonder what to do with a fat eighth? Here is one great simple block - it's a disappearing 9 patch - cut on the diagonal and reassembled. For this quilt I used all Cotton + Steel fat eighths. A fat eighth is 9" x 21" - but not all fabric cuts are totally accurate. Some of my pieces were just shy of 9" deep, so I cut my squares for this 9-patch: 4 1/4" x 4 1/4". Pull out 9 squares that make a variety in both color and dark/light. Sew into a 9 patch, 3 across by 3 down. Now cut this whole unit from corner to corner on the diagonal. You will end up with 4 pieces. Put these into a pile and start the whole process over again. Now comes the fun part. Take two random triangles and position them so that the two large, uncut squares are opposite each other. Don't try and be all matchy matchy or overthink this. There is so much pattern that trying to 'figure out what looks best' is not really possible. Put your pairs all together and have fun sewing them together. Now its TIME TO TRIM! My blocks were a little shy of an 8"x 8" - so I just grabbed my 7.5" square ruler and trimmed everything to 7.5" x 7.5". Yes, a little waste with the trimming but I really didn't want to chase after an extra half inch or so and following the template made perfect blocks and kept this project relaxing and fun. Now the important part - layout is key. There are two whole squares in the middle of your block, and above them are two small triangles (dark pink and stripped in the pix above). The goal is to have the 'little triangles' meet whenever you can during the layout phase. Why do it this way? I think it's easier to find the little triangles as a repeating pattern on an already busy looking block. The pix above shows how easy it is to find the four little triangles to match up. Not every side of your blocks will have little triangles to match. But if you do it this way - lots of secondary diamond shapes appear throughout your quilt ... all created by the various sized triangles lining up. To layout on point - here is a video from the Fat Quarter Shop for visual instruction. There is also a link for a downloadable cutting & measurement chart. I would recommend using Kimberly's suggested cutting sizes and even going a half inch larger for the corner triangles - this will allow lots of wiggle room for squaring up. Notes: one 9-patch made with 4.25" squares yields 4 'triangles' (or 2 blocks). Each block is trimmed to 7.5" x 7.5" This quilt has 25 Cotton + Steel blocks. Following the Fat Quarter downloadable chart, the rest is Kona white with a 3" border on every side. The back is a rainbow of left over minkys and here is my post on how to do that. I press my seams open so quilting was done with a walking foot on either side of the seams - and through the larger squares that didn't have seams. Because of the minky back I did a generous 3.30 straight stitch length and used Aurifil 50wt. #2000. Back in January, I gave you a sneak peek of a project I was working on. Today is my turn on the blog hop for a new book by Teresa @ Sewn Up, Teresa Down Under -- Turnabout Patchwork. You can buy the book here. I made the Double Disappearing Nine-Patch, and here's my finished quilt. You start out with a simple nine-patch block using 5-inch squares, that you cut into eight pieces -- the traditional horizontal and vertical cuts, and then you cut each quadrant on the diagonal. You sew the opposite inner triangles (with pink corners) together and the outer triangles together. This results in four 6.5-inch blocks -- two blocks that have reverse colours on the top. And two blocks with a little bit of colour in the corners. The layout is alternating blocks. The white centre is a result of operator error (block trimming error), and I didn't have any fabric to make more blocks. I attempted a flower quilting motif.
