Block 18 - Century of Progress Block 17 – Cats & Mice I made this block three times using foundation paper-piecing and I wasn't pleased with any of the results. My notes convey my dislike of using this method for this block: "horrendous little block" ..... Block 17 Paper-pieced version 1 ....... and "retried - still horrid". Block 17 Paper-pieced version 2 Finally I revisited the block and patched it as the original block had been patched at the beginning of the 20th century. Sure enough this method worked perfectly. Block 17 - Cats & Mice patched using my free block pattern So, in hindsight, standing on the shoulders of our foremothers was the best way. You can do the same using the free block pattern I have created. FREE CATS AND MICE BLOCK PATTERN Block 18 – Century of Progress I changed the fabric placement to create a symmetrical Block 18 When this block was originally created great strides were being forged throughout the world. I am so grateful for those strides especially when it comes to my electric sewing machine. This block is one of my favourite to date especially after I made a change in fabric placement to create a more symmetrical block. My notes simply state "beautiful block". I am bang up-to-date it would seem - not that it matters - this is a marathon not a sprint!

Another week and another two blocks on the Farmer's Wife sew-along being hosted by Gnomeangel. Block 3 - Basket Block 3 - Basket My notes say it all "Horrid block to paper-piece". It should be simple - there is nothing much to it but it wasn't. Perhaps I was tired. I added a paper-pieced handle which was the easiest part of this block! Block 4 - Basket Weave Block 4 - Basket Weave I know this block as Brick Path. It is a very traditional block that I have patched many a time in many different sizes. My journal entry states "Quick and easy and very, very pretty. Lovely block." So there you have it - one good and one not-so-good block. Until next week when I'll be back with another two blocks.

Here are the From Marti Michell template conversions for the Peony block: The Double Aster Block Double Aster is a classic design credited to Nancy Cabot. In Jinny Beyer's book The Quilter's Album of Patchwork Blocks, Nancy Cabot is said to have presented this block, which she called Double Windmill, in her Chicago Tribune column of October 26, 1936, and attributed it to an old Pennsylvania Dutch pattern pieced in Philadelphia as early as 1800. Nancy Cabot was on a roll -- 2 weeks later, she added 2 triangles to each quarter-block and the new block became Double Aster. She "fertilized" Double Aster with 8 more triangles and a dozen squares and created a new block called Peony and Forget Me Nots, very close to block #76 Peony. I fell in love with Double Aster in the late 1990s, when I used it in this sampler quilt. (Sorry this is only one section of the quilt. The blocks are 16 inches, it is a big quilt!) Wherever the quilt was displayed, Double Aster was always the block that attracted people. At that time, we developed a Double Aster class plan that we made available to stores. It was great for learning about the triangles in Sets A and B because the block has 4 different sized triangles. I had made 8-1/2, 12 and 16 inch Double Aster blocks, but not a 6 inch block. When I first saw Peony in the Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt book, I thought it wa Double Aster and assumed it looked different because it was so small. Then I realized Peony had more stuff going on at the edges, which seemed to clutter the design. That settled my decision to make Double Aster for my quilt and share it with you. By the way, it was only after I decided that I compared the number of pieces. Double Aster has only 37 pieces, compared to 57 for Peony -- wouldn't you rather cut, sew and press 37 pieces than 57? A Double Aster for our Mystery Quilt Made with Set A, this is also a perfect block for our 8-1/2 inch mystery quilt. (Click the images for a larger view.) Bonus Sizes Double Aster is also a perfect block to demonstrate the versatility of the templates. You're using From Marti Michell templates to make 6-inch blocks, but our basic sets (A through D) can make up to 4 sizes each of hundreds of block designs. If you own Set A, you can make Double Aster in 3 sizes (6, 8-1/2 and 12 inches, finished). And you get 3 more sizes with Set B (8, 11-1/4, and 16 inches). What's the 2+2 triangles in the 12-inch block? It's triangle template A-2 doing a template trick! You can cut any triangle twice as big using this trick! (It's great for Flying Geese units, too -- cut the 2 small triangles with the triangle template, then use this template trick to cut the center triangle!) It has been a long, long wait from the start of my Farmer's Wife Sampler quilt, and you have stuck with me the whole way. Now, after weeks and weeks of nothing but individual blocks, I'm so excited (so, so excited) to show you the finished quilt top (minus the borders). Please excuse all the pictures. There are alot of them! My design wall (aka - a plastic picnic tablecloth) worked great and kept the un-sewn blocks from being tramped on through this process. I set the blocks on point, and used little squares of printed fabrics for the cornerstones, while using a creamy white for the sashings. I haven't decided what fabrics to use for the borders, so for now I just love to stare at it, in all of it's creamy, colorful goodness! If you haven't done so yet, you really ought to give this one a try! The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt (20's) Block 4 Basket Weave I mentioned in my 6 month update that a few of the blocks I had done for my Farmer's Wife quilt had already been rejected for new colours. This is the first one, Block 4 Basket Weave - a simple block, but before I had done it in a brighter red which wasn't working with my subtle colour palette. Block 25 – Cups and Saucers Block 25 - Cups and Saucers I combined paper-piecing templates 2, 4 and 5 (from the Yahoo group templates) on Unit A and started with that piece. It just cut down on some of the seam matching. Block 26 – Cut Glass Dish Block 26 Cut Glass Dish I have a dislike of 6" blocks that contain so many half-square triangles as I get bored very easily. However, this is where paper-piecing comes into its own as notes state - "very glad I am that I paper-pieced it as it made seam matching easier". Leave the papers on until the block is complete. Block 27 – Darting Birds Block 27 - Darting Birds This block "took two days because I was busy with other things". It is not difficult but yet again, leave the papers on until the block is complete. I didn't follow the paper-piecing templates as I found them confusing. Instead I paper-pieced four quarter bear paw blocks - it was easier and quicker. Block 28 – Duck and Ducklings Block 28 - Duck and Ducklings Notes state simply "nice block to make - very pretty in pink". And so it was and is. I now have enough blocks to sash another row. So 'onwards and upwards' as we say here in England. You can see all my Farmers Wife 1920s blocks HERE. I seriously considered ditching the templates and working out the math for each block as I go along. I love math, and I know that my work is more accurate when I rotary cut my pieces. But I wanted to keep in the spirit of this project, so I'm using the templates from the book. I hand pieced and quilted my first quilt using templates, so this process isn't new to me. This time around, I am using my rotary cutter to cut around the templates and I'm machine piecing my blocks. I thought I'd share the process that I use, first I will go through how I prep my templates: Supplies: Thin Cardboard (i.e. cereal boxes) Spray Adhesive Templates* Rotary Cutter - it's best to use a separate blade for paper Ruler *A member of the FWQAL flickr group graciously combined all of the book templates onto 15 pages. I used these templates printed at 100% and they are measuring up great! If you need help finding the template document in flickr, let me know. This is not meant to be a substitute for purchasing the book, however. :) Start by spraying one side of the cardboard with the spray adhesive (I think the templates stick best to the unprinted side of the cardboard). I did this outside. Some people spray the templates and stick them down. I hate getting the adhesive on my fingers, b/c it is tough to get off. So I spray the cardboard! Take the cardboard inside and lay your templates out. I don't like to lay any of my templates over the folds in the cardboard. As you lay each piece down, smooth it over with your finger. If there are bumps or wrinkles, you can pull the piece back up and try again. I find it pretty easy to smooth out the bumps without pulling the pieces back up, though. Wait a few minutes before cutting the templates with your rotary cutter, that will minimize the adhesive that sticks to your ruler. (Adversely, it's best to stick your templates down immediately. Typically spray adhesive is permanent only right after it's sprayed.) When I cut my templates, I line up the solid SEWING line on each template with the 1/4" line on my ruler. That ensures that I have an accurate seam allowance, regardless of the dashed/cutting lines. (See the red arrows below pointing to the solid SEWING lines.) In the pic below, you can see where my ruler is with respect to the dashed/cutting line. Trim all sides of the template the same way. To trim the funky corners like you see on the triangles, I just eyeballed it. You can use a ruler, though. This is how the edges of my templates looked after trimming. Continue until you have a stack of pretty templates! (I cut all of the templates for my first 8 blocks to get me caught up with the group, and in the future I'm planning on cutting my templates as I need them each week.) Now that the templates are ready, I will go through how I cut my pieces using the templates and a rotary cutter and ruler. Supplies: Templates Masking Tape Rotary Cutter and Mat - switch out your "paper" blade at this point Ruler Fabric For reference, I chose the Big Dipper block for this tutorial. It only requires one template! To start, make a loop with masking tape and stick the loop to the back of the template. Now stick the template onto the fabric. I cut 4 layers at a time here. Line your ruler up along one edge of the template. I line up the solid SEWING line on the template with the 1/4" mark on my ruler. And trim! Repeat on all remaining sides (don't trim those funky corners yet!). Now to trim the corners, I don't use a ruler. I just set my rotary cutter on the edge of the corner and press down. I try not to roll my cutter around a lot, because I want a small, clean cut. Here's my triangle with 1 part of the corner trimmed. Repeat with the little bit that is remaining. Line up the rotary cutter, and press down. Ta-Da! Repeat until all of your pieces are cut, and piece as desired! You may need to use a fresh piece of masking tape after a few templates. If the template isn't staying put on the fabric, use fresh tape. You don't want the templates moving around! I've seen a few blog posts now where people are questioning the funky corners on the pieces. Fussy Cut explains it really well in this post, scroll down for the picture and explanation. They really do improve accuracy in piecing! Up next, my first few blocks!

My quicker-than-quick version of block 41 - Granny (details below) This weeks blocks for the Very Kerry Berry sew along are two that I have already made for the Gnome Angel sew-along ...... Block 13 – Belle. English paper-pieced. Block 13 - Belle Block 14 – Betty. Patched. Block 14 - Betty For the Gnome Angel sew-along we added another two blocks. First up was Block 41 – Granny. I paper-pieced this block and took a very quick shortcut. Block 41 - Granny Here is how I simplified the paper-piecing construction ..... (note: you will need the templates from the Farmer's Wife 1930s book – the diagrams shown here are for illustration purposes only and are not to scale). Print out the eight paper-piecing templates that are on the CD that came with the book and cut out each one. Stick the templates together (A to H, C to B, D to E and F to G) to create four corner units that should look like this: Join the templates to create four corner units. (Do not print this diagram - it is not to scale or size. Use the templates that come with the book) Next you need to draw a line that runs from the corner of the square up to the diagonal as shown by the dotted line below. Draw a line from the corner to the diagonal. (This diagram is not to scale or size. Use the templates that come with the book) Then it is a case of simply paper-piecing each corner unit in the following sequence. Sections 2 and 3 are the same fabric whilst square 1 is a contrasting fabric (see the book for details). Paper-piece the block in the order given - just two seams. Use the templates that come with the book - this diagram is not to scale or size. I have marked the four sections on my photo below so that you can see how it goes together. The other block was Block 45 – Jenny. I patched this block using quick corners. You can find a tutorial over at She Quilts a Lot showing how. Block 45 - Jenny It was a simple make and I posted a photo to my Instagram feed. People were too polite to mention that I had stitched a corner the wrong way round but once I spotted it I was able to just spin the corner. Block 45 - Naughty Jenny - see that top right-hand corner! My Grandma's 90th Birthday is November 1st, and I wanted to do something really special for her. She has been one of my favorite people for a long time -- she used to fix the holes in my worn out teddy bear, over and over. She always choose the Old Maid card that my brother and I wanted to get rid of. And I still wish that she could make me a peanut butter sandwich every night for a bedtime snack, like she used to do when I slept over at her house. She makes the best peanut butter sandwiches, ever. When my Grandpa turned 90 years old a couple of years ago, my brother and cousins presented him with 90 bottles of beer. You should have seen the huge smile! So I wanted to do something equally amazing, and maybe even better, for Grandma. So here it is . . . . 90 quilt squares! After I read about the Farmer's Wife Quilt Along starting up, I knew that this group of blocks would be perfect. My Grandma wasn't a Farmer's Wife, but she was a farmer's daughter! I started making the blocks this past summer, but quickly realized that I would need (LOTS) of help if I was going to finish it in time. So I invited my mom, aunt, and uncle over for some quilting parties! They're not technically quilters, but my mom and aunt have done some sewing, and my uncle is a mathematician & painter, with a good eye for design and color. We spent most of our Tuesdays together for the past 2 months -- they'd arrive right after I dropped the kids off at school, and we'd sew for hours and hours. Most of the blocks are paper pieced -- and my quilting helpers did ALL of the tearing the paper off the backs for me -- how wonderful! We had so much fun together, that I've joked that we need to decide who to make a quilt for next -- we make a great team! We had a hard time deciding on a layout for the 90 blocks, because a simple square design of 9 x 10 blocks seemed too plain. And I wanted to make it large enough to fit a double/queen sized bed. One day we just started laying out our blocks on a huge piece of white fabric, and this design was born! For the blocks set on point, I cut a 5 1/2 inch square on the diagonal, then sewed these triangles on all four sides. For the squared up blocks, I added 2 1/2 inch sashing to all 4 sides. All blocks were then squared up to 9 inches. There is another 2 1/2 inch border around the very edge of the quilt. The fabrics are Kona Snow and Moda Sugar Pop. I free motion quilted this myself, using a fairly small meandering type pattern throughout the solid snow fabric. I love how it makes the blocks pop! The batting is Warm and White, and the back is a collection of left over pieces. She loved it! Linking up to:
Farmer's Wife 1930s Block no. 43 - Hope VeryKerry Berry is chasing through the Farmer’s Wife 1930s sampler quilt with another four blocks: Block 41 – Granny. I cheated with this block and paper-pieced it in such a way that I eradicated those silly half-triangle squares. Find out more HERE. Farmer's Wife 1930s Block no. 41 - Granny Block 42 – Heather. Another block that I’ve covered already HERE. I loved this block – so much that I made two. . Farmer's Wife 1930s Block no. 42 - Heather Then we came to a block I was looking forward to and which I like the look of.... Block 43 – Hope. This block has a partial seam and my notes read “not sure I got the partial seam perfect but it is pretty and to size”. It is also sashed and joined to another already! Farmer's Wife 1930s Block no. 43 - Hope Block 44 – Iris. I struggled with this block. Notes tell all ..... “Seams didn’t match up when joining two halves. I don’t quite know why because the middle and ends match and it is to size. Unpicked and restitched. Better match but still unsure. Maybe I am being too fussy.” Farmer's Wife 1930s Block no. 44 - Iris GnomeAngel managed another two blocks before scheduling a break until 1st March. Both blocks are covered briefly here as they have been blogged about before: Block 11 – Bea. This has been blogged about HERE. I like how the handle looks like ribbon – it isn’t, it is the small stripe on the fabric that makes it appear so. Farmer's Wife 1930s Block no. 11 - Bea Block 23 – Charlotte. This was an easy block to paper-piece and I made it in two halves. Nothing challenging – quite straightforward. Farmer's Wife 1930s Block no. 23 - Charlotte I actually only have another 7 or 8 blocks to make and you can see all the blocks I've made so far over on my Farmer’s Wife PinterestBoard or on my Farmer’s Wife tab above. Block 19 – Checkerboard Block 19 - Checkerboard I love how this checkerboard is on the diagonal. A nice easy block to paper-piece. I used two different fabrics for the checkerboard but the contrast is not enough to notice. Block 20 – Churn Dash Block 20 - Churn Dash "Easy peasy." I patched this classic block using the pattern from my One Block Mug Rugs book (available in PDF format - for the paperback edition click on the photo below). Turn any 6" block into a fun mug rug Another two blocks and this quilt is really coming together. And I am loving the look with the country sashing and gingham cornerstones.
