Every time I think I've made my last Florin Quilt, a simple EPP hexie flower design, appliqued to background squares, I come up with another way of colouring it in! I'm sharing the 5 different versions I've made to inspire you to make your own!
Last week I finished my Modern Hexies Rainbow. This table runner / wall hanging is made using a technique made popular by Nicole Daksiewicz of Modern Handcraft. You can find her tutorial here. I decided to made a rainbow wall hanging because I loved the thought of the bright hexies against the grey Heath fabric from Alexander Henry. I had some Heath left over from my Wheel of Fortune mini quilt. I recycled the 1" hexie papers I used to make Honeycomb Spin. They are called 1" hexies because each side is 1" long (that's how paper pieces are measured). And for my final thrifty step, I dug through my scraps and cut a hexie from each of the RPYGBIV fabrics I came across. So this quilt is made entirely from things I already had at home. Getting the hexies evenly spaced is the trickiest part of this design. I had already made a mini quilt just to try out this technique (see below), and I knew the hexies had to be straight so the quilting lines could run through them nicely. I like to use my long ruler to keep the rows evenly spaced. The hexies are all glued down with Roxanne's glue, and then machine quilted, so they are quite secure. I decided to quilt with a variegated Auriful thread I had on hand. I thought that white thread would highlight any crooked lines in the quilting, and dark colours might just disappear into the grey. So I decided to compromise and use a variegated thread. I marked lines with my hera marker, but they were difficult to see on the grey Heath fabric, so I resorted to using a chalk pencil too. When it came to the binding I was really stuck. Did I want black and white to let the hexies shine? Or did I want a bright colour? And if so, which colour? Mulitcolour just looked crazy. So I went to my local quilt shop, Nancy's Stitch Studio, and the owner Mary Self suggested black and white with pops of colour. I loved that idea, but was worried that a pop of colour might end up on the corner bend and be very bulky. Mary said that sometimes she just makes up the binding as she is sewing it onto the quilt! What a rebel!! Why hadn't I thought of that? Anyway, that's what I did. I started with a little bit of quilt maths, but then made it up as I went along. Thank you Mary! Unfortunatley the grey background is very hard to photograph. It looks dark in some photos and light in others. Trust me - it's really nice in real life. Finished size 40" x 20"
Today's quilts include all the quilts I saw in the RMQM exhibit made from patterns by Willyne Hammerstein. Probably the most "famous" pattern of hers is La Passacaglia, which include all the quilts shown here except the second one. A couple of these ladies said this was their first attempt at English Paper Piecing. I'm not sure they could've picked a more difficult pattern! I have this book and the "papers" and have yet to start it. Some of the pieces are very tiny! I love all of these quilts - I think they're just amazing. And the three made from the same pattern are all very unique!

EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt - TUTORIAL Hi Quilty Friends! PS- the Wild and Free Panel is a must as it is a map of USA with all the states and their flower! I knew I wanted a to make quit a with a floral design and I love a Grandmother's Garden Quilt, but hand sewing hexagons together would take me forever and sewing y-seams is stressful. So I used my AccuQuilt GO! Half-Hexagon die to make my quilt EASY with no hand sewing or y-seams! EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt Tutorial 53.5" x 63.5" Quilt Supplies: (12) 1/2 yards : Wild and Free designed by Gracey Larson (5) 1/4 yards: Wild and Free designed by Gracey Larson 0.625 yard binding: Wild and Free designed by Gracey Larson 3.5 yards Backing OR (1) Wild and Free Panel with extra (1) yard of Wild and Free Main Print plus left over fabrics AccuQuilt GO! (Total of 144 half-hexagons) Each 4 1/2" x WOF Strip will cut (4) half-hexagons Cut each 1/4 yard print into (1) 4 1/2" X WOF strip, then cut (4) half-hexagons with your AccuQuilt GO! Half Hexagon 4 1/2" Sides Die from each print. (Total of 20 half-hexagons) There will be a total of 164 half-hexagons cut. Quilt requires 162 half-hexagons. Each full flower requires (12) half-hexagons for petals and (2) half-hexagons for flower center. Don't worry - it's super quick to cut the half-hexagons as your AccuQuilt GO! Cutter does all the work for you! Plus you can cut 6 layers of fabric at a time - yay! Cut (6) 2.5" x WOF binding strips. Note: If you do not have an AccuQuilt GO! or GO! Half-Hexagon die - try using Lori Holt Hexie Half Ruler Set. Just use the larger size ruler. Your quilt size may vary slightly from mine. Quilt Assembly Arrange your half-hexagons in your desired layout. Don't worry about the hexagon edges on the quilt sides, we will be trimming them off. No need to panic- it's just a tiny bit of trimming off so there isn't much waste at all. Layout should be (9) half-hexagons across (horizontal) and (18) half-hexagons down (vertical). Sewing Begin sewing horizontal rows together. Sew (2) half-hexagons short sides, right sides together with 1/4" seam. AccuQuilt has already trimmed the corners of your blocks so they are easy to line up and sew together. Continue until entire horizontal row has been sewn together. Row 1 Row 2 Continue sewing all (18) horizontal rows as shown above. Be careful to pay attention to placement of half-hexagons. Next sew Row (1) and Row (2) together with a 1/4"seam. I did pin each point as I like perfect points :). Repeat sewing rows together in numerical order until quilt top is complete. Trimming Quilt Using a ruler - trim the edges of the hexagons on the left and right edges of the quilt. I trimmed at the intersection of the two fabrics. This will give your quilt straight edges and it will be so much easier to bind. See diagram below. EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt will measure 53.5" x 63.5". OPTIONAL (but awesome): Pieced Backing The Wild and Free Panel is AMAZING! Plus I love a double sided quilt so I chose to use my left over fabrics for a fun pieced backing! I think this is a fun (and pretty) option to learn US Geography!!! Quilt and Bind as desired You did it! Just finished hand quilting my Jack's Chain Quilt. I am so excited to have this done. The binding is made and ready to sew on as soon as I get the quilt trimmed and squared. I took the first stitch in the quilting on June 20, and now, just one month later, it is quilted. I think that must be a new record for me. Doing big stitch with #8 perle cotton sure sped up the process and I am pleased with the look.

As I delved into the world of modern quilting, one project kept popping up at me: Modern Hexies. As soon as I saw them, I knew I had to make them but didn't know where to get started. After a quick search, I discovered Nicole, the Queen of Modern Hexies, and got started on my own Modern Hexies quest!

I am not, have never been, and have come to terms with the fact that I will never be, a patient person. And I just couldn't wait any longer! This is the new fat quarter bundle I am using to make my Oblongagon quilt for the Quilt Along in 2014! Along with a couple solids. It is Spot On by Studio RK in the Summer Lovin' palette and I got mine from Pam at Mad About Patchwork. In the planning of your project for this quilt along, the cut of your chosen fabrics will be used to determine the layout and block size for the quilt you will be making. The oblongagon is made from a square, but a rectangle can also be used. Here are some possible cuts which can be made from fat quarters and half yard cuts. In the Introduction to the Oblongagonalong, we looked at 3 possible layout options... the Chevron, the Flower and the Random designs. For the Chevron design, the width of the quilt depends on how many blocks you decide to use for each horizontal "stripe", what size of block you use, and how many blocks are a part of each "stripe". This chevron style on the left has a lower hump and the style on the right has a higher hump. The one on the left needs 12 blocks per "stripe" - on the right needs 18 blocks per "stripe". Using your fabric pull for the project and a hexagon grid, you can plan your design using pencil crayons. I knew that I had 12 fat quarters of printed fabric and wanted to use the Flower design. Of those 12 prints, I determined how many of each colour there were: 2 dark blue, 2 light blue, 2 yellow, 1 white, 4 green and 1 orange. And each print cut into 5.5" x 6" pcs would result in 12 flower petals or 2 flowers each. I decided to use solids for the centers of my flowers and came up with this plan on the EQ7. This quilt layout is 54" x 55". Of course you can see that I really did break my EQ7. That blank block will always be up there on the top left corner for every design using the single block style quilt design. *Sigh* When it came time to cut, I chose the best use of my fat quarters. These fat quarters measured 18" x 21" so I cut each of them into 12 pieces at 5.25" x 6" a lot like the third diagram at the beginning of this post. I used two half yard cuts for my solids. First I cut those half yards each into fat quarters. Then I cut one fat quarter from each colour in the same manner, making 12 pieces of each solid. I cut 6 strips for binding from each remaining fat quarter and will use them to make a scrappy binding. Tune in next week to see how to turn those blocks into the OBLONGAGON! Keep On Quilting On!
