Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each white square. 2. Pair each 2-3/4" marked square with a 2-3/4" bright square, right sides together. Stitch 1/4" on either side of the marked line, cut on the line, and press both half-square triangles (HSTs) open. Trim HSTs to measure 2" square. 3. Layer 2" marked white squares on the two bottom corners of a bright 4" x 6-1/2" piece as shown. Stitch on the drawn line, trim 1/4" past the line, and press open to make a tulip bottom. 4. Lay out the four HSTs as shown to make three tulip points. 5. Sew the HSTs together and sew to the tulip bottom. 6. Lay a 3" marked white square on the bottom half of a 3" x 6-1/2" green triangle piece, noting orientation of the line. Repeat, making sure to position the marked line opposite the line on the first piece (mirror image). Stitch on each drawn line. 7. Trim 1/4" past the seam and press open. Layer a second marked square on the top of each green piece, noting orientation. Stitch, cut and press open to make two mirror image leaf units. 8. Sew a 1-1/2" x 3" white piece to the top of each leaf unit as shown. Sew a 1-1/2" x 7-1/2" green zigzag stem between the two leaf units to make a leaf/stem unit. 9. Sew the leaf/stem unit to the bottom of a tulip. Repeat to make three additional tulips and leaf/stem units. 10. Lay out the four tulip blocks in a row and sew together. 11. Layer a 4" marked white square on top of a 4" bright print square and make HSTs like in step 2. Trim to measure 3-1/2" square. Make four HSTs in each color combination and join the HSTs into a pinwheel block as shown. Make one pinwheel block in each color. 12. Sew four pinwheel blocks into a row. Trim the two 1-1/2" x 42" green zigzag strips to measure 24-1/2". Sew them together with the tulip row and pinwheel row as shown. 13. Sew 2-1/2" x 20-1/2" white strips to the sides of the quilt top. Sew 3-1/2" x 28-1/2" white strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Machine quilt the wall hanging. 14. Use the three 2-1/4" x 42" strips to bind the wallhanging. 15. Make this lovely star table topper today using precut 5 squares and have it on your table for your next gathering. Designed by Chris Malone.
This rather striking block makes a stunning mini quilt to hang up on your wall. It would also work fantastically as an accent cushion on a bed or sofa. You could choose to make more than one block for a larger quilt or a runner. The pattern uses two techniques to piece together the block. Firstly templates are used to cut the individual shapes and then these are pieced together using foundation piecing. You will need to be comfortable with both of these techniques to complete the block. Included in the pattern: - Full set of printable template sheets and foundation paper piecing patterns. - Instructions and diagrams to assemble the block. - Tips to help achieve precise results. - Samples of alternative colour options for inspiration. The pattern does not contain instructions on foundation piecing but there are many great tutorials on line to help you with this. Finished size 24" x 24"

Okay, I shouldn't give up my day job....HA!!! Over at Sew We Quilt, I have shown how to make this little runner. It is made with the Accuquilt Heart Die but seriously you do not need one, just cut out your own. With the left over hearts I made this candle mat (or little table topper)...but I am keeping it. I went for a visit with a friend to the Denver National Quilt Festival today. We both were in need of some great inspiration, and we were not disappointed. As I was getting the photos together for this post, I was thinking... Now this is my favorite. A little play on words. Actually a big play on words. A people jar for bugs, instead of a bug jar for people. It was about 4 foot tall, and absolutely hysterical! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But Then I saw this, and I love Dr Seuss! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And then A Zebra in my favorite colors!! My heart swoons! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Would this not be perfect for all those hand dyes I am hoarding? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Overall Sam is soooooo cute, but check out the fabulous quilting! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now this one floor'd me. It's her very first attempt at fusible applique. Just look at that incredible detail You won't be finding any treasures like this in my first attempts! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now this one just screams Ahhhhhhhhh doesn't it? This could be a painting! Then... Crime Scene... oh yeah! With all these great saying on the fence! Now you gotta admit, that's just darn funny! And soooooo true! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ This one was hand painted and shellac'd to look like ceramic. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can you even imagine? The details are spectacular! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I love this!! :-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And this makes me want to start something new! So simple and captivating! Here she used up stuff. Even the directions on how to make something from a printed panel. It's soooooo cool looking! I've got tons of stuff! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I love how the light dances on this one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thread painting you say? I thought so too, until I read about it. Cheesecloth... did I really read this right? Better yet, and you imagine having the vision? ~~~~~~~~~~~ These are just darn fun! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm a trying to get my quilting sister to do this on our quilt retreat, but she's not to keen on it. You have to admit, it's funny! And about 6 foot tall! :-) :-) I am leaving you with my favorite, I think, yep, I am pretty sure, although they all really are! I want one just like it!!! ~~~~~~~ OOPS I knew I would find more I have to share. Remember all those half square triangles we all seem to have to save? Well, forget piecing them together to make pinwheels. You can use each half and just stitch them down. This is pretty darn cool isn't it? I think I am on my way to find some scraps, and start my own little art quilt. Oh yeah... it was a good day. Thanks to all who were so generous, in showing their quilts to us. I know my mind is on overload now! And that's what quiltin' is all about!
There is a new quilt pattern in town! The Four Winds quilt by Amber Corcoran is Fancy Tiger's newest pattern and our very first quilt pattern. The construction of this quilt is quick, due to large scale patchwork and an efficient method of making its flying geese blocks. It is simple enough for new quilters and is a great introduction to matching your points, as the large blocks are pretty forgiving. queen/king size quilt We love this modern take on the classic flying geese quilt. The sample quilt uses 12 fat quarters from the Liberty Lifestyle Bloomsbury Gardens quilting cotton that pop off a background of Kona cotton Snow. The pattern would look fantastic in the new Lotta Jansdotter collection (that we just got in!), or Carolyn Friedlander's Botanics fabrics. twin size Three quilt sizes--throw, twin and queen/king--are included in the pattern. The instructions thoroughly detail the construction of the quilt top, the quilt back and how to make a "front-to-back" binding, a method of binding popular in the 1930's You can get the Four Winds Quilt pattern now in our Etsy shop and print copies will be available here in the shop next week. Happy quilting and stay cozy!
I titled this post "Puffy Goose" because my friend who doesn't sew said, "I don't know what a puffy goose is, but I love it!" My puffy flying geese are completed, and I am in love. Are you too? My first intentions were to make a mini project that I will just have to do again in the future. This time with the only intention of sewing that mini project!! And then I began to love my fabric pull so much that I opted to make a larger project - a sewing machine cover. And then I loved my geese so much that I decided they needed to be displayed. Hmm, have you ever experienced anything like this before? My first time sewing real flying geese. My first mini quilt/wall hanging. All unintentional of course. The fabrics used in this piece are: Stamped by Ellen Luckett Baker Skinny laMinx Essex Linen in Bleach White Jessica Jones Wildflower xx nancy My quilting book released Sept. 24, 2015 and is on Amazon.
