I certainly didn't get pictures of ALL of the contest quilts. In all, there were 345 quilts in the judged show. This International contest had juried entries from 18 countries. The break-down was as follows (for those keeping score at home): USA - 213 JAPAN - 51 AUSTRALIA - 20 SPAIN - 15 FRANCE - 3 GERMANY - 3 CANADA - 13 S KOREA - 5 MEXICO - 1 BRAZIL - 3 NEW ZEALAND - 3 UNITED KINGDOM - 5 INDIA - 1 ISRAEL - 1 KENYA - 1 TAIWAN - 4 CHINA - 2 SWEDEN - 1 I have pictures of a few quilts from a very few of the Exhibits. There were a total of 1072 additional quilts in 56 distinctive Exhibits. I will post them next time. There were so many incredible quilts, and they were all curated and displayed so well. Stupidly, I did not allow enough time to even walk through all the exhibit quilts, let alone take pictures. There is NO END of incredible quilts to see at this show. Next time I am fortunate enough to return to Houston for the show, I will allow more time...this trip was a last minute whim. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! In stitches, Teresa :o)
Helene Knott with her award winning quilt "Low Tide" Yesterday was the open house for Helene Knott's solo exhibit at the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center in Tillamook, Oregon - and what a treat it was!! Helene is a fellow member of the Northwest Quilters, and I've seen her quilts in our guild show over the years. We also had one in the "Timeless Quilts" exhibit at the Oregon Historical Society last summer. But I'd never seen so much of her work in one place. The gallery was full of her wonderful quilts, and there was a steady stream of visitors. I had a few minutes to chat with Helene, and just loved learning more about her and her work. I took a lot of pictures, and here are just a few. "Gypsy Heartwood" 2008 "You Can't See The Forest For The Seals" 2001 "'The Captain's Wife" 2000 "Reflections of Winter" 2004 A wall full of fabulous quilts!! "Magic Squares III" 2007 "Teotihuacan" 1998 "Morning Sun" 2002 A case full of small quilts! "Cobby Cat" 2011 There was so much to see, I hope to get back and look at the exhibit again. It runs until September 2, 2012. For more information, click here.

Let's start with the Yoko Saito Retrospective. Known as the founder of Taupeism, Yoko Saito started her quilting journey emulating traditional American quilt designs. Ultimately she found her true quilting voice with softer, low-volume colors and meticulous details. The exhibit opens with a country cabin surrounded by spring flowers—real blooming spring flowers that are fresh and fragrant! The show includes incredible quilts, bags, and a home display that demonstrate Yoko’s high design sense and needlework skills. Here is a photo of Yoko Saito today, busy signing books in her shop’s booth on the other side of the Festival floor: The most celebrated quilts at the Festival are the four Grand Prix Winners: FRIENDSHIP AWARD / Treasure Box by Megumi Yokoyama HAND MAKING AWARD: Quilt by Keiko Morihiro JAPAN QUILT GRAND PRIX, SECOND PLACE / Welcome to Martha”s Garden by Masami Ishibashi JAPAN QUILT GRAND PRIX FIRST PLACE / Quilt by Tokiko Yanazawa It has been my good fortune to attend Tokyo Quilt Festival four times. I wanted to reproduce a poem by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), (translated by Alastair Reid) for you which is called Keeping Quiet....but alas the required permissions to do so are incredibly laborious. The publishers (not the poet!) want me to have a copy of the book in hand so that I can fill in a form with about 20 different esoteric bits of information - almost to the point of counting the full stops (periods) in the entire book!!! Plus full details of my entire existence!!! The poem is so appropriate at this time of year - when we're singing about silent nights but not really thinking (or cogitating!) about the importance of silence. The message is so strong - for all of us of course, but for artists in particular. It is difficult to create beauty in the midst of noise and chaos....we need silence. It begins: And now we will count to twelve and we will all keep still. For once on the face of the earth let's not speak in any language, let's stop for one second, and not move our arms so much. and here's the link to the full poem...do read it. All my very best wishes for the holiday season (however you celebrate it) to all my blog readers. And if you have been, thank you so much for reading all year long! Elizabeth

Hollis Chatelain Statement: Blue Men is the nickname given to the nomadic Tuaregs who roam the Sahara desert on their camels. They wear indigo blue turbans which gives their skin a blue tint. This quilt is a tribute to the many Tuareg men I befriended while living in Africa. This is a whole cloth quilt, painted only with blue dye. The many colors of thread in the quilting give it a touch of reality. I have been in awe when I saw this quilt some years ago at an International quilt festival in Houston, Texas. This is a scan of a photograph. Awesome when Viewed Large On Black
That title is true in more ways than one! Winter - the season - is finally done here in my part of the world. But more importantly, my first Bee Sewcial quilt, Winter, is also done! This quilt is a collaboration quilt - all of my Bee Sewcial partners contributed one large or two smaller blocks to this quilt. If you look at this blog post, you'll see my original prompt, where I asked them to make minimalist winter landscape blocks using shades of grey with white. I took the blocks, puzzled them together and then fretted about the quilting. I won't bore you with the long list of Finish Along quarters that this beauty showed up on my Goals list. Suffice it to say that the top has been assembled since late 2015, I believe. For the quilting, I marked a couple of the lines, and then eyeballed some walking foot quilting in more or less equal intervals, keeping some parallel and others in wavy points. I used Aurifil 50 weight in a light grey colour (2600). I actually bound the whole thing and then decided it needed more quilting so out came the 12 weight cotton thread in the same colour. My hands weren't happy with that thick thread but I love the effect! I might even add some more but I needed to call this one done after so long. I have my sisters in creativity, the Bee Sewcial group, to thank for this amazing finish. Every month, I am in awe of their skill and creativity. How lucky am I to be inspired and challenged by these amazing women! This is a Finish Along finish as well! Hooray! No more putting it on my list! Wheee!

During our recent trip to Amsterdam, my mum and I were wandering through the 9 Straatjes area of artisan shops and galleries when we stumbled across a series of tiny, beautiful stores dedicated to buttons, fabrics and quilt-making. We lost several hours of a very sunny afternoon completely absorbed by the myriad of materials, colours […]

People who truly love quilting for the fabric, the process (over & above perfection), the color, texture, and cheap therapy. Life is stressful. It's good to have random discussions about a quilt in the hoop and the thread on the floor.
This is my friend Margit's second quilt at the show. We were all hoping for a second ribbon for her on this one...it was certainly worthy! It was custom quilted by Marilyn Lange of Ypsilanti, Michigan. This was the Best of Show Bed Quilt, "My Fractured Waterfall," by Kathryn Gostola, machine quilted by Eva Birch. It also won best machine quilting. This was one of the winners of the quilt challenge. Every year the quilt shop at the Village issues a challenge with specific fabric and rules. One of the required elements this year was flying geese units. Cyber friend Ann Champion entered three quilts and won three ribbons! I got to meet her briefly on Sunday afternoon when we were picking up our quilts. This is her first place winner in the Wall Quilts: Appliqued-Hand Quilted category. It is called "A Country Journal." Fabulous, and you know how I love chickens... Her second quilt is called "Princess Feathers" and it won a third place ribbon in the Bed Quilts: Appliqued-Hand Quilted category. It is AMAZING! I loved this wolfe! Pictures don't do justice to this snowy barn scene. I have always liked this candy pattern. Mmmmm...candy.... This is Ann Champion's second place ribbon winner in the Bed Quilts: Pieced-Hand Quilted category called "Flowering Snowball." This was a real eye catcher! The machine quilting is interesting...cactus and sombrero... Do you see a theme developing here? I have always loved these curvy, spikey quilts... This is "2000 Pieces" and it won the ribbon for Best Color Usage by Sarah Basinger. Each fabric is used only once! This one grabbed my attention (my daughter and her love of Harry Potter and fantasy fiction has worn off on me...). I have my Dad's ties, along with others, and I am always looking for a good idea of a way to use them in quilts. This version was very pleasing. MANY, MANY more pictures to come... In stitches, Teresa :o)
