This method is used in my Farmer's Wife Quilt Revival pattern classes. The 'No Waste' Flying Geese method is a great technique, making ease out of many Farmer's Wife Sampler quilt blocks. To learn more about my pattern classes for the Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt, (using very few templates!) click HERE for more information To make 'No Waste' Flying Geese: Cut a square the finished length measurement of the desired flying geese unit and add to this, 1-1/4" (1.25) Cut 4 squares the finished height measurement of desired flying geese and add 7/8" (.875) Example: To make 1-1/2" x 3" finished flying geese units, cut 1 square 4-1/4". Next cut (4) 2-3/8" squares Stitch them together as shown below Mark a diagonal line corner to corner on the smaller squares and place right sides together with the bigger square, like this: Stitch a 1/4" on either side of the drawn line Cut apart on the drawn line. creating 2 of these units press seams towards small triangles place a small square right sides together with both units from above like this: stitch 1/4" on either side of the drawn line cut apart on the drawn line Yields 4 Flying Geese units Math Chart for a handful of common Flying Geese sizes Of course, you can stick to the traditional method for Flying Geese using corner triangles, but the 'no waste' method is great!

Today let's take a look at this Broken Window quilt block from the Kansas City Star publication. Once again, there are other blocks out there called Broken Window - that's just the way it is. This block isn't very difficult - if you can do Half Square Triangles and Flying Geese, you're good to go! Let's get started.

Happy new week to all my lovely blog readers...……..i hope january is going well for you.... ……….pictures of my work table this week with lots of flying geese being sewn, notes and ideas being jotted down and other crafty things going on too......as well as plenty of tea and coffee and some cheerful flowers to look at of course...………. ………..the flying geese border is now sewn on to the central panel of applique flowers..... ……...next will be another border...….but first i am working on my second new quilt of the year so far which i'll show you at the end of this post..... ………..this is rita rabbit (named after one of my grandmas) and i am very fond of her although she was just a 'test' pattern she is quite sweet and the children all like her......i had to snap this picture of her after a child had been playing with her here last week :)….she seems to be a very maternal kind of rabbit……. ………...of course i have toys for myself most of all...….i love how they look with fabrics and stitchery.....the little dog is from northfield primitives and the little pram below is from maileg….. ……….this is my tiniest bunny and i might get a pattern written for her this year......here she is on the persephone bookshelf....a small child visiting here recently asked me if these were 'all the same book?'...……..:) ………..i have regretfully put the pixies away now till next christmas arrives......maybe we could invent summer pixies...... ………….luckily the goose can stay around though, getting ready for easter……. ………...and here is my second new quilt...…….evening star blocks and more flying geese..... ……...i love the kona solid fabrics for the graphic look of the blocks and i really like these colours together......they are kona white, grapemist and punch...... ………..thank you for all your sweet comments about my irish chain quilt last time......and thanks for all your visits to my little blog space...…..wishing you a happy week ahead with plenty of crafty inspirations...…………….back soon xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Wild Goose Wednesday is pretty simple. Each Wednesday for the next 33 weeks I will be making and posting 8 flying geese for a total of 264. Use the simple tutorial above to make 4 | 2-1/2" x 5" finished blocks Cutting From print #1 {light or dark print} cut 1 | 6-1/4" square From #2 Print {light or dark print} cut 4 |3-3/8" squares Assemble 1.Draw diagonal lines on wrong side of smaller squares. 2.With right sides together place two small squares in opposite corners. Sew 1/4" on each side of drawn line. 3. Cut on diagonal line. Open triangles and press. 4. With right sides together place another small square in corner as shown and sew 1/4" on each side of line. 5. Cut on diagonal line. Open triangles and press. If you would like to make a different size block check out this great size and tutorial sheet Once the quilt is assembled it will measure 55" x 60" This is my inspiration.
