On a few of my posts sharing my current on-point scrap quilt, many readers have asked about the final assembly process. Well, I remembered to take a couple photos as I sewed my quilt top together so I can now share the process I use. The first step is to get the layout how you want it. I find a design wall really helps with the next steps. It can make assembly so much easier if you can see what is going on. Here is how I add sashing. For my 8" blocks, I decided to go with a 1" finished sashing. The first step is to sew a strip between all the blocks and create diagonal "rows". Next you need to cut the sashing to run parallel to the rows. If you look in the upper left, you can see the strips exploded out. You can just simply measure them with a tape or I just do the math. In the lower right, you can see I have begun to sew on the sashing to the blocks. You do this before you sew on the inset triangles to the edge. I usually make square quilts when I use this layout because rectangular quilts cause some difficulty. Those with an eagle eye can see that the 4th strip down will require a partial seam (yuck). Because the seam is long, it is not that hard. The process is just awkward. The next step is to cut and sew your inset triangles to the rows. I can never remember the formula for cutting the right size triangles, so I turn to my phone. I swear by the Robert Kaufman quilting calculator app. Just choose the set-in triangle option and put in the finished block size plus the finished sashing size. In my case it is 9" (8" block plus 1" sashing). In my case, I start with a 14" square and cut diagonally twice. Are you wondering how much fabric that requires? Turn to the app again. This time use the Pieces to Yardage option. I find this choice on the calculator so useful! For this quilt, I have decided to add in my triangle detail. I have previously shared the tutorial here. If you struggle aligning the sashing when you sew your rows together, I share a tip here - it works perfectly! This layout really is pretty easy if you just remember the order to sew the pieces together. Looks like I am on my way to having another finished quilt top soon. Guess I had better start looking for some backing fabric! Zu Zu's Petals is an updated version of a vintage 1930's quilt I found on an antiquing trip to Rountop, Texas. Most 30's quilts ere straight set with sashings and a plain border. Using two different sizes of petals and an applique border gives the quilt more interest. The applique is fused and machine stitched, but can be made using any applique method. Cornerstone Sample, Nearly Insane Quilt Now that I have started gathering a good set of blocks for the Nearly Insane Quilt, I have been putting my mind to the other elements in the quilt. This past week the cornerstones and sashing have been the focus of my attention. The original quilt has solid squares of colour at the point where four blocks meet on point, but with such little blocks, I felt it deserved something more delicate. Crossed Canoes Block, Nearly Insane Quilt Using my Electric Quilt 5 software, I searched for a block that would link the corners of the neighbouring blocks and came across this Crossed Canoe Block, which I have slightly adapted by making a completed square in the middle, rather than four triangles. The cornerstones for the sashing, are just 2" square, and I will need to make 85 in total, plus a further 28 half blocks for the edge. I do like these little blocks, and imagine a quilt made of these, alternated with plain blocks? As you can see I have only made one, so perhaps ask me about this idea once I have completed the other 84! Nearly Insane Quilt Sashing 2" x 6", Unbleached Calico For the sashing I have kept it simple, by just using the unbleached calico for the 2" by 6" strips. I think there are about 196 of these to do, so I intend to do a few as I go along, rather than a load at the end. So with the cornerstones, sashing, half blocks and full blocks, this is the layout of how the quilt will be set. First of all - thank you for supporting my quilt sale and fund raiser last week. I raised $965 for Fostering Great Ideas. Quilts doing good again! I recently finished quilting and binding the Sampler Block of the Month Quilt that was featured in this year's Quilter's Planner. This is a block-of-the-month that is included in the quilt pattern magazine that comes with each planner. The quilt was designed by my friend, Cheryl Brickey from Meadow Mist Designs. She created a very interesting setting for the sampler blocks, but of course, I had to do something different. I used 5 of the blocks from the Sampler Quilt and set them diagonally, adding some negative space to square it up. The fabrics are all blues and blue-greens, mostly prints from various Alison Glass lines. The center block section is quilted with a grid, with diagonal lines in the striped and solid white areas. In the white, I spaced my quilting lines to mimic the spacing of the quilting in the striped sections. The backing is a white with gray Alison Glass print and the binding is the same solid used in the stripes. I've been waiting for the perfect quilt to photograph in front of this beautiful mural in my home city of Greenville. It was done by local artist Joseph Bradley. My friend noticed the cute bird peeking around the quilt on the right. I wish I was clever enough to have planned that, but I got lucky! It's quite large and makes such a statement! I think I need to make another quilt to photograph here :)

Welcome to the ECMQG February 2014 Block Lottery! If you are new to the group, or our blog, you can read the general information here and see past lottery blocks and the winners. The rules are simple: The Lottery is open to all ECMQG members in good standing. Please use only quilt shop quality fabric. The aesthetic is ALWAYS MODERN Take your time and effort to construct your block well, and use 1/4" seam allowances (unless the tutorial states otherwise). Blocks should be the correct size, within about a quarter of an inch. Each block + $1 is one entry in the drawing.You may submit as many entries as you would like. Please label your block with you name, either within the seam allowance on the back or an address label stuck to the back. Past winners can still contribute, but please understand until we see a finished quilt from your win, allow someone else the thrill of winning. If you have any questions please contact me - Kira - or comment below. For the February 8, 2014 meeting, we are making the 'Circle of Friends' 12.5" (unfinished) block. The color way this month is Kona white background and modern scraps - yep that's right scraps! So gather up your modern fabric scraps and have fun! This block is based on the 9-Patch layout and even though it looks complicated in reality it is very simple! All nine units are the same size, but color placement in the units creates an illusion of a circle. Three different units make up this block - A, B, & C A's are the top and bottom centers, as well as the two sides; B's are the four corners; and C is the center square. Simple, as well, ABC! For the focus fabrics you need 8 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares. Background fabrics cut: 8 - 2.5" x 1.5" rectangles (for units A) 8 - 4.5" x 1.5" rectangles (for units A) 4 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares (for units B) 4 - 4.5" by 2.5" rectangles (for units B) 1 - 4.5" x 4.5" square (unit C) Here you can have fun with placement - lay out your 2.5" square scraps in a circle. Play with colors. Select the top, bottom, and two sides for your A blocks. Unit A For units A you have the 4- focus 2.5" squares, 8- 2.5" x 1.5" rectangles and 8- 4.5" x 1.5" rectangles. Sew one background 2.5" x 1.5" rectangle to a focus square and press towards the background. Sew another 2.5" x 1.5" rectangle to the opposite side of the focus square and press towards the background. Next sew a 4.5" x 1.5" rectangle to the edge of each focus square and press towards the background fabric. And sew the last 4.5" x 1.5" rectangles to the four squares and again press towards the background. Now your unit As are complete, set these aside for now. Unit B With the remaining 4- 2.5" squares, 4- background 2.5" squares and 4- 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles we can create units B. Sew the 2.5" background squares to the 2.5" focus fabric squares and press towards the background. Next sew the 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles to the side and press towards the background. Units B are complete. Let's sew this baby together! Check the layout and pay close attention from this point on how the units are sewn together. Create the rows by sewing the units together as in the photo above. Press towards the unit B blocks on the top row and bottom row, and towards unit C with the center row. This is how your rows should look, see the color placement and how it creates a circle or ring of colors. Now sew your rows together and press towards the center row. Ta-da! Your done. I'm down to the wire, but happy to report that I finished my OMG for January! I wisely decided to set my goal as to just get the top done for the sloth quilt, and I did manage to do that, just barely. I enlarged the sashing and borders to make this quilt large enough. These blocks are 24 inches square, so it didn't overwhelm them at all! At 80 inches square it's a bit of a challenge to photograph! I think it will be a good size for my over 6 foot tall son in law! Way too big for my design wall! Now, I just need to find the right backing and I can get this project totally finished! They really are super cute.
