Hello everyone... My April 1 blog post (and sadly, this is not an April Fool's Day note) will be delayed until May 1. I have been quite ill lately and am far behind on way, way too many tasks around the house. I don't know when I'll catch up, and am simply trying to "make time" to get caught up, once my health returns. Happy quilting! Sue Garman

Finally I can show you my centre piece for Mountmellick, the Di Ford Mystery. I completed it last night. Doing my own thing with this mystery proved harder than I had thought. The 'flower arranging' was finally done late last night and I can now share pictures of what I did. I stitched the stems using mostly the Hungarian Braided Stem Stitch and for the tendrils I used the normal stem stitch. Instead of the broderie perse flowers in between the swags, I made circles of my favourite ochre fabric with roses. Borders 2 to 5 are mostly almost completed, so it should go a bit faster from now on. I cannot wait to attach border 2, to see how my focus fabrics - mostly by Judie Rothermel - work with this romantic and soft feel of the centre piece. Back soon with more news of Mountmellick, and of some lovely Christmas presents I received over the past weeks.
Whether you are making a quilt by machine, hand, or both, this list of quilt supplies for beginners has everything you will need.
In Colonial times, quilts were more utilitarian than decorative for the common family. The wealthy were able to obtain elaborate fabrics and the colonial lady could stitch beautiful bedcovers, whereas the lower classes made quilts from the scrap-bag. The earliest Colonial quilts were made of Indian chintz and palampores. Colonial era chintz was an expensive fabric and threatened the mills of France and England as the upper classes were buying this gorgeous fabric over the plainer linens and cottons of Europe. Thus chintz was banned by Parliament in 1720. However the ban was lifted in 1759 once the mills had acquired the necessary skills to make chintz, ending much of the import from India. One pattern still popular today is toil de jouy, which originated in France and was a popular design in Colonial America. Most likely you have seen it as wallpaper and fabric. A relative of mine once papered her bedroom in blue toil and it was beautiful. I find it 'a joy' that toil de jouy is still popular after more than 200 years. Palampores were cotton or linen panels that were hand-painted or dyed. Only the wealthiest of Americans could afford this fabric and you would find it in plantation and estate houses throughout the Thirteen. The designs were colorful and elaborate, made up of ivy, flowers, horses and peacocks. Each design was one of a kind. One thing of interest is how the quilts were made at the end to slip between the bedposts. Some Colonial quilts were made of whole cloth. Fine stitches were made in ivy and floral patterns. In time, the Colonial housewife used quilts that were utilitarian, to keep her family warm and comforted. Slave women made quilts from scraps and you can find some in museums that tell a story of family and culture. Block designs have been handed down through the generations. Here is a quilt I made in between writing historical novels. I've made several, but this is one of my favorites. I change the wall hangings in my foyer with the seasons. I have a leaf quilt for autumn, a snowman quilt for Christmas, and this floral basket quilt for spring and summer. In closing, if you were living in Colonial times, what kind of quilt would you have made? Would it have been practical, or decorative?

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen two things: quilters talking sheepishly about the size of their stash and quilters green with envy looking at someone else’s stash. I have a lot of thoughts about this, but it boils down to something simple: sheepishness and envy are not confidence, a
I’m super excited to introduce this new quilt pattern! A fun jelly roll friendly Hexie Quilt. Hexagons are super popular right now in quilts and this is a fun twist to the classic Hexie quilt. I’ve yet to attempt a Y seam so this pattern is made up of half hexies which go together in […]

This year in the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge group, we were encouraged to work in a series for our challenges. I thought I would try to express abstract concepts in a "Spirit" series. The following quilts try to capture the spirit of various words or ideas: The "Spirit of Passion" was made using a new technique for me. I layered three fabrics and sewed them together with curved lines then cut away layers to reveal layers below. To add interest and finish off raw edges, various embroidery stitches were used. This was a very pleasant process. Continuing with this new process "The wandering Spirit was created". I had played with rusting some fabric and was anxious to use some in a quilt. It has alot of possibilities and was a fun exercise for me. I hope to use more rusted fabric in some future projects. "Spirit Renewed" was the result of a sketch where I was attempting to capture the concept of "spirit". I was thinking of hope, and faith as I drew my sketch and feel that it acheived this feeling. A complementary color scheme was used with the purple and yellow being opposites on the color wheel. I find this piece very restful, and my Mom wanted it for her bedroom, how could I refuse?

This wall hanging truly covers all of my passions, embroidery, ribbonwork, vintage lace, and dyeing! The base fabric is comprised of all of those precious scraps of handmade lace and fabric that you can't throw out! I placed a layer of Solvy over the scraps then machine quilted the pieces together. The base was then dyed with the Color Hue Dyes, along with silk satin ribbon, silk embroidery ribbon and buttonhole twist that was used to embroider with later. The ribbon worked flowers are made from Hanah silk bias ribbons, cotton grosgrain ribbons, and dyed silk satin ribbons; the embroidery was stitched with silk ribbons and embroidery threads.
