Yesterday, I spent a little time assembling the "A Life of Plenty" quilt together, and took a few photos as I went along! It forced me to finish stitching down some leaves on a few of the blocks, so that was good! I now have it up on the design wall, and will be figuring out what to do with the borders! It's a busy quilt, so I may make it very simple! Here are the pictures, and you can see I've put sections of blocks together, and it's pretty simple! Enjoy! I drew some dotted lines to help you with the placement of the shapes on the block! I Jeni Gaston, am a procrastinator! I have had about four quilts that my mother made for about 3 years, to quilt. I had actually started quilting one for her two years ago, only to find out that after quilting about a four foot square area, that I had used the wrong backing! So I took it out of the frame, and folded up and took it home to rip the quilting out! Well, I didn't get around to it, and finally a few weeks ago, started to take out the quilting. Our long arm lady at our shop, helped one day also, which was great! Since we are closing the quilt shop, we decided to sell the long arm. We didn't think it would sell so quick, but it sold the first day! The buyers are picking it up on the 11th, so after work yesterday I loaded Mom's quilt, and today after Church, I quilted it, and another of her quilts! Two down, two to go! The second two are smaller. here are a couple pictures of her quilts! Mom has always made such perfect points! I wonder who of her grandchildren might get these two beautiful quilts! They will be lucky! My Daughter and her fiancé are here cooking dinner, and then we plan to watch "Turn!" I'm so glad they are cooking, cause I'm pooped! Have a great Sunday evening! Jeni
Hello, folks. I really didn’t think I had enough photos to blog, but I was wrong! Here we go..... I took a three day Zoom class with Lisanne Miller again. This time we are hooking the old Buttermold pattern, but giving it a touch of our modern ways. I love hooking this type of pattern, as it is like hooking many small patterns and you feel quite accomplished with each one. My progress thus far. And a couple of close ups. Except for the backgrounds, I am hooking entirely from worms or scraps. If the wool strip is too wide, I just cut it down with my scissors. Cuts range from 4 - 8.5. First grade Flowers had to be on break while I took this class. Next up, I finished the Ready for Spring (Woolen Willow) top, and as soon as I make a backing it will be ready to head to the longarm quilter. As you can see, my setting is quite different from the pattern(below). For my personal taste, I just found the setting to be distracting, so I went with sweet and simple and I really like it. My colors are more in line with Fall than Spring, The outside borders are an old Blackbird Designs fabric. All fabrics for this sweet quilt from stash. Can you see me smiling? This arbor never fails to amaze and please me. I am sure I post a pic of it every year. Please bear with me...hahaha. Also, see a peak of last year’s Christmas amaryllis to the right. It had six beautiful, big flowers. We had lots of family goings on... Macy’s fifteenth birthday...... Robert’s twenty second birthday (how did that happen???)... Loved his cake. Good morning! It's time again for a new block on this fun adventure! I am loving seeing everyone's beautiful work on the Facebook group for this project! If you don't know about it.....go check it out! Twice a month, a designer releases a beautiful Free Crazy block for you to download and make, or you may order a nice kit from each designer, so you don't have to work so hard choosing fabrics and making decisions! At the end of this fun project there will be a finishing kit as well, from Rhonda McCray of Farmhouse Threads, who organized this wonderful idea! Thank you Rhonda! Okay.....the moment you have been waiting for...here is my block! You will find the free downloadable pattern on my website, as well as the kit, should you chose to purchase one. You may also order the printed pattern, if you don't want to bother with the downloading and printing! Here is the link to my website....there is a button to click at the top of the home page. https://woolenwillowdesigns.com/ A couple things I found very helpful in making my block... I hate to trace templates for Crazy quilts...what if I don't do it exact? I found these wonderful printer friendly freezer paper sheets that you can just copy the templates to with your printer! https://woolenwillowdesigns.com/collections/supplies It saved a ton of time, and there are 50 sheets in the pack, so you can use them for the next blocks as well. Once I copied the patch templates onto the freezer paper sheets in my printer, I cut them out on the drawn lines, pressed each one onto the corresponding fabric, and cut out using my rotary cutter and ruler, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance past the edge of the ruler. I didn't include the seam allowance, because I know some of you may be doing another method where you will need a larger seam allowance, so you can decide! I chose to sew my blocks together by machine. Here is a picture of my fabrics cut with the freezer paper still on them...the nice thing with the package of copier freezer papers, is that the numbers of each patch will automatically be there, and the placement diagrams of the applique as well! In my picture, you won't see that, because I didn't have the pattern written yet when I did my block. All the instructions are in the pattern, but I wanted to just show you a few things. After your patch pieces are sewn together, I found it really helpful to stitch around the edge of the block as Shawn from Rusty crow did. Then I fused the whole block onto Shape Flex fusible interfacing. This really helped the block to not stretch or fray, and it was so light and easy to stitch through! You will either do your crazy stitches next, or you will do your wool applique. That is all up to you. I did my wool applique first, but it may have been easier to handle the fabric for the crazy stitching, had I waited on the applique. I have some photos for you showing how I did the flag. I cut the red wool the whole size of the flag, and then appliqued the white strips and blue star field on top. Here is how I did the stitching. I love using a chalk wheel to mark stitching lines on my wool. If needed I use a small ruler. Its just a nice guideline and I really believe that things don't have to be absolutely perfect to be beautiful! Next I added colonial knots in the spaces. Here are a few more photos showing how I made lines and did simple stitching.... On the sunflower, I drew the lines, made running stitches on the lines for texture, and then filled in the spaces with colonial or french knots. I did the same thing for the Bee Skep...drew lines with the chalk wheel, followed on the lines with a running stitch. This is a cool variation of the feather stitch. By now, you have all made feather stitches on the previous blocks. For this stitch, you follow the seam line, and instead of going back and forth with each "arm" of the feather, you stay on each side for three stitches. Then I added a french or colonial knot at the tip of each one. here is an example with contrasting colors for you to see. The regular stitch is on the left, and the variation on the right. I drew a seam line to follow with pencil, just so you could see. Just a few more pictures for you of the stitches close up that I used. They are all simple ones, as I'm not a proficient crazy stitcher! Well, I might be crazy...but I'm not proficient! Ha ha! This one is just a simple cross stitch with a french or colonial knot inside each space. This photo is just to show you the detail on the spool. I used the chalk wheel and free handed some zig zags, then stitched over with a back stitch. In this photo I just wanted to show you the simple feather stitch with a french or colonial knot at the end of each stitch, and the star stitch. These are just long straight stitches caught up in the middle with a tack stitch! Very easy! I hope you enjoy making this block and all the blocks! Good morning friends! Have you ever looked up the definition of Primitive Art, or Folk Art? If you have, you will find out that color has nothing to do with it! That being said.....most quilters who like the primitive style, usually go with darker or more subdued colors, but I think that is because it reminds them of an old antique quilt! If you look at an old quilt where it isn't worn....in a seam possibly, or an old hooked rug on the backside, where it didn't get much light.....often times you will find bright colors! The style actually is all about character...sometimes what the maker may have been trying to show about his or her life and surroundings. The quilt or rug may have been utilitarian or decorative. Here are a few examples of bright Primitive or Folk Art style projects that have graced the pages of Primitive Quilts and Projects magazine. I decided to re-make one of the quilts from my book "Primitive Style" in brighter colors. The quilt is a traditional style patchwork quilt, but it is very dark and scrappy in my book. Silly question, I know you must have thought I forgot you! I promise I have not! I got my quilts and wool projects all finished and sent off! I'll get right to it....... For this cute little sunflower block, you will need to cut your background fabric 7" x7", get the templates from my website http://www.woolenwillowdesigns.com, ( they should be up soon!) and after you applique, trim the block to 6 1/2" x 6" For the flower I used a mottled gold wool, with a cotton black print center. I needle turned the cotton center onto the gold wool. I used two different hand dyed green wools for the stem and leaves. Also, you will need to make one more house block ( directions found in "Part Two") with the word "Faith" embroidered on it. This can be found on the template sheet with the sunflower. We also will need one more unit of 6 flying geese! I'm working on these today, and will post a picture of them with the next block all together! Just three more blocks after these, then we are on to the borders! Yippee! I can hardly wait to see what it will look like all completed! Let me know how you plan to quilt your quilt! Will you hand quilt, or machine quilt? If you machine quilt, will it be on your regular machine, or will you use a long arm machine? Hello! Good news! We have decided to give you a little more time to finish your #mystashmystyle projects! You have until Tuesday May 31! So ...
Are you ready for the next part? I hope so! You will be able to just go to my website www.woolenwillowdesigns.com, and to the sew along template page to download your templates! The written instructions will be here to read, and jot down on your template sheets if you wish! For the Basket block..... *cut B and D from light fabric, with the template. *Cut C from a dark fabric. Sew B/C/D together. *Cut a 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangle from the same light print, sew to the top of the above unit. *Cut out the handle from the dark fabric, adding a seam allowance if you are turning under to appliqué, and appliqué in place. *use scraps of wool to make the flower, leaves, and star. I whip stitched them down with matching wool threads. For the stem, I used a pretty green perle cotton from my Woolen Willow Valdani collection! The block should measure 6 1/2." * For the house block cut... One 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" dark for roof One 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" dark for door One 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" med. for house Two 2"x 2 1/2" of same med. for either side of door Four 2 1/2" squares of light for sky One 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" medium for side of house *Make a flying geese unit as in block one, using two 2 1/2" light squares and the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" dark for the roof. *Make a half flying geese unit with a light 2 1/2" square and the side of house medium print *Sew the 2"x 2 1/2" med prints to either side of the dark 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" piece. *Arrange these units following the diagram, and sew together. *Use a chalk pencil or disappearing pen to write the word LOVE above the door unit, and embroider with a contrasting perle cotton. I used a stem stitch, and a pretty neutral from my Valdani collection. You could also use a back stitch. Since #3 blocks were so quick, here is another to work on over the weekend! You can see that I'm not done stitching either! I'll be finishing that up, and getting the next one ready for you as well! For this block, cut your background 7" x 13" , draw lines in it for 6"x 12" so you know not to put your pieces too close to the edge! After you appliqué, trim to 6 1/2" x 12 1/2" ready to add to your quilt! Don't sew this on just yet though! That will come in due time!! The template page is up on my website, www.woolenwillowdesigns.com! The middle and right side bias stems are 3/8" x 5 1/4", and 3/8"x 3 1/2" finished. The left stem is 1/8" x 2 1/2" finished. Good morning stitching friends! Today is my turn on the hop, thanks to Joyce Weeks, and Rhonda, for switching dates with me. I also want to thank all of you who sent up prayers of comfort for my family. I was really happy to hear that this would be a patriotic themed quilt hop, because my Husband and I are both Navy Veterans! Look how young! That was about 34 years ago! Okay, on to what you have been patiently waiting for! Here is your block #6! I love flowers, and flags...... Here are your materials 2"x2" gold wool for star on vase 2 1/4" x 5 1/2" green wool for leaves 1/2" x 5" brown wool for flag pole 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" pumpkin wool for flowers 1 1/2" x 2" blue wool for flower centers 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" dark blue for star field 3" x 7" brown wool for vase 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" red wool for stripes 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" white wool for flag base and white star 3" x 5" green wool cut on bias for stems Don't forget to reverse the pattern if you plan to fuse. You only need to cut red strips, and lay them on top of the white flag base. When cutting the green stems....if you cut the whole piece on the bias, you can just cut strait stems, and then curve them as much as you need to, and pin in place. You can also still use a fusible web on this piece.....after you fuse, just cut the strips, peel off the paper and it will still curve to press in place! Make sure to cut the stems long enough to tuck under the flowers and vase....for the leaves, I just butted them up close to the stems. Does anyone know where this whole week went? The crazy thing is that, I'm pretty sure that I didn't accomplish much! Maybe a time warp happened? Well, here it is, Friday, and I plan on accomplishing a lot! Here is part 11 for the sew along! Cut your background 9"x9", center the applique pieces, using the template on www.woolenwillowdesigns.com sew along tab. After all the stitching is complete, trim the block to 8 1/2" square! I used all hand dyed wool, and wool thread from the collections of wool thread we sell on www.primitivequiltsandprojects.com. If you go there to order a set, make sure you sign in as a guest, even if you have an account, because there seems to be a sign in problem on the website. I have some stitching to do, but here below you can see I've started on it this morning! What else will I do today? I'm glad you asked! I'm going to work on my book! Here is a sneak peak of one of the projects! Try to be patient, though, because it will be a year from now before the book is ready for sale. My part is to be done for Martingale by January though, so it's crunch time for me! So I plan on writing two more patterns today, and start a new quilt for it also!
