My fabric scrap pile is taking a hit with these blocks and I'm so happy about that. Sometimes, I enjoy the blocks enough to make 2 or 3 of them. Who knows how many quilts I'll have finished by the first of the year. At least 2 ... I am working on donation quilts and scrap organization. This challenge is perfect for both. Let's make block 8. You can make block #8 several ways but I'll show you 2 because I love shortcuts. Staggered Size Unfinished: 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" Finished Size: 10 x 10" Construction technique #1: Cut 4 rectangles 3" x 5 1/2" - white Cut 4 rectangles 3" x 5 1/2" - orange Stitch them together as laid out with 1/4" seams. Stitch the columns then stitch the columns together, matching seams. OR Construction Technique #2: Cut 2 rectangles 3" x 11" - white Cut 2 rectangles 3" x 11" - orange Stitch them together as laid out with 1/4" seams. Next, cut this unit in half as shown at 5 1/2" so you have 2 columns 5 1/2" x 10 1/2". Flip the second column so the white rectangle is on top Stitch the columns together with 1/4" seams. See, now I have 2 of #8. Maybe I should keep making these and then I could have this quilt. Staggered Love!
Ever since I posted my Ellie Travel Case Tutorial, people have been asking if I could share the dimensions for making it bigger. Yesterday I finally sat down to crunch the numbers and sew up a sample, and here it is at last. Though I adore the straps on the original bag, I changed them in this version. These wider straps make a better anchor for a larger case. The big bag also uses Peltex 70 interfacing by Pellon on the lining. I won't kid you, it's a bear to work with on this project, but the finish is worth it. You'll end up with a seriously structured bag. I used a Melody Miller print for the top panel, charcoal Brussels Washer linen for the bottom panel, and pink Mochi Dots for the bag lining. There are endless ways that you could customize your bag with extra details and pockets if you're in the mood to be creative, but the basic version still makes a great travel case all on its own. Here's the new materials list for the larger size: (2) 11 1/2 x 20" linen print for the exterior top panel (2) 11 1/2 x 20" batting for the exterior top panel (You can attach regular batting with adhesive basting spray or just use fusible batting.) (2) 9 x 20" linen for the exterior bottom panel (2) 9 x 20" batting for the exterior bottom panel (2) 20 x 20" linen print for the bag lining (2) 20 x 20" heavy interfacing to reinforce the lining (I used Pellon's Peltex 70 which I fused to the lining with adhesive basting spray.) (2) 1 1/2 x 38" strips of cotton webbing for the handles (1) 22" purse zipper with two sliders and a closed bottom (I bought mine at Joann Fabrics.) coordinating thread Clover clips or clothespins *All seams are 1/2" except alongside the zipper where they are 1/4" wide. Follow the same instructions for the original bag with just a few changes: 1. Fuse the batting to the top and bottom exterior panels before you do anything else. 2. Attach the handles to the top exterior panel before you sew the top and bottom exterior panels together. The left handle end is 6" from the left side of the top panel, and the right handle end is 6" from the right side of the top panel. I followed the same procedure for attaching handles that I used in my Ipanema Beach Bag tutorial (minus the outer pocket on this version, though you could add one if you like), sewing 6 1/2" up the handles from the bottom of the exterior panel. I also added a 1" square with an X inside it at the top of the stitching on each side just to keep the handles securely in place. After sewing the two exterior panels together, I topstitched two 1/4" lines below the seam joining them. 3. The squares cut out on the four corners of each exterior panel are 3 1/4" square for this bag size. 4. I did not make zipper tabs for my zipper this time, but you can if you want to. 5. Go even slower as you sew in the zipper on this bag. The Peltex 70 makes for a tough wrestling match, but you can win if you put your mind to it! 6. I added leather thongs to the ends of my zipper sliders on this bag. I love this easy finishing touch. That's it! The resulting bag is approximately 9 x 12 x 13. Not quite enough for a weekender, but definitely good for an overnighter...as long as I don't bring my children along, of course. These beautiful examples of Hawaiian quilting are from the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu. Back in college, I made a pillow using this applique technique for a "GEOLOGY of Hawaii" class. For a geology class??? I know. Makes no sense. It was the 70s, what can I say... I don't know what became of my yellow orange/orange pillow that had nothing to do lava, volcanoes, or island formation.

Way back in June, I made six sets of duplicate L-O-V-E letters. Each set looked something like this, with a bit of a difference here or there. I wasn't measuring, just making them approximately the same. I kept a set, I mailed a set to a mystery someone who may or may not choose to ever play with them, and the others went to: Quiltville Bonnie, SewPrimitive Karen, Knit One Quilt Too Kristin and Threadlines KathieB. I wanted to see what different quilts we'd all come up with, starting with this same set of letters. The goal was to have the top pieced by the end of the year. For the first time ever, I managed to complete a challenge. I'm usually too slow or can't figure out what I want to do... But this time I not only met the goal, but surpassed it, because my quilt is completely done. Woohoo. And I'm thrilled with it - really happy with how this turned out. It's not a great pic (streak of sunlight and a Lily intrusion) but I present to you, Rumspringa: I made a lot more L-O-V-E. Some actually looked like letters, in others the color placement was crazy. I added additional fabric where needed to make all the letter blocks the same size and sewed them into 4-Patches like this: I wasn't smart enough to take measurements before I packed the quilt in a suitcase. But it is fairly large. Quilted with regular quilting thread in freehand fans spiral-style. Bonnie, Karen, Kristin, and KathieB: how did you do with the L-O-V-E Letter challenge?

These are the blocks that came back from our MQG Block Swap....I LOVE them all!! I'm not quite sure where I'm going with them, but at least they hit the design wall. So many ideas, so little time. On a side note, I'm buying a longarm quilting machine (again). It will be delivered/set up at the end of the month. We are painting another room in the house to become a longarming room. I'll post some pics once it is done...My newest passion is looking for "modern" quilting online. Also, I have made about 25 granny square blocks. I'll take a picture in the daylight this weekend!! ;-)

When I moved into my house a few summers ago, I didn’t pack away my sweaters and they were selectively chewed by moths. I couldn’t bear to toss them, so I made them into scarves which I mostly sell, or give away as gifts. However, all along, I’ve been thinking of how I can make a blanket out of the sweaters, which I now buy for a few dollars each at thrift stores. You’d be amazed at how many I find. A few weeks ago, I came across a technique that was the solution for the blanket. I needed to be able to patch the squares together without having rough edges. I found a Korean process for seams that would work perfectly. The finished edges looked nearly identical on the front and the back, and this was exactly what I wanted. You can see where I started the project here. I first put together strips of 11 blocks of 8x8 inch cashmere squares. I was never good at maths, and so my calculations were slightly off and the finished blanket was a wee bit bigger than I anticipated and it was very ungainly to sew. It wasn’t until I put it on the bed that I realized exactly how big it is, so I may actually have to cut it down a little bit and maybe make another blanket. This one’s already spoken for – actually, it’s a Christmas present for my mother (she already knows because I wanted her to pick out the colours). It’s puckered a bit at the hems, but that’s mainly because I haven’t blocked the piece yet. That will flatten it out and shape it. Not all of the patches aligned exactly, but once I saw the finished product, I realized that I liked the slightly off-set look of the pieces. I discovered that the patches with the cables, particularly a certain sweater, stretched more than the other pieces, so that accounted for the lack of alignment. Over all, I am pretty pleased with the way this turned out, and now I am going to make one for myself! And then I am going to wish for a very cold winter, because this is going to be so cozy and warm!
