Looking for something to keep your kids happy while on the go? Something you can pack along when you're out shopping, at a restaurant, waiting at the doctors office or even driving in the car? I was. I was tired of handing over my iphone every time I needed entertainment on the go. I needed something fun and entertaining yet inexpensive and compact. This personalized On The Go Book will grab any kids attention. Made of inexpensive felt, this book is just the right size to go in mom's bag. It comes with three activities: Dress-up Tic-Tac-Toe and Coloring My kids love it, especially because they saw mom making making it just for them. Materials you'll need: -10 sheets of felt (the best price I found was Walmart for ¢25) -4 of one color for main pages of book -2 of one color for embellishments -2 more of a different color for embellishments - one skin colored piece - one hair colored piece -flexible sew-on Velcro tape. (I bought a pack of 30 feet with a coupon and only used a small amount) -8 pack of crayons -small note pad Step 1: Cutting out main pages I cut eight 5 x 7 pieces of felt in the same color I used my paper cutter to make it easy. Any method would work.Step 2: constructing page 1 & 2, Dress-up. I started by drawing a picture of a paper doll. I traced the hair onto another piece of paper then cut the doll out of the paper. Holding the paper doll in place, I cut the doll out of the skin colored felt. Ignore the ears, they didn't work. I sewed the body down by sewing a small seam around the edges. I cut the undergarments following the same process as the body. I sewed them into place and added a piece of the soft sided Velcro to the tank top and underwear. I hand sewed the face on with normal thread. I used a small red felt oval for the mouth. The last step is cutting the hair out and sewing it into place. I followed the same process for the clothes. I traced the body onto a new piece of paper and drew clothes onto it. I cut them out of the paper and then the felt. *I cut each main piece of clothing out twice, one for the front and one for the back. After embellishing the front side and adding the sticky sided Velcro to the back side I would sew the two pieces together. For the shirt I first sewed down the embellishments. Then I placed the t-shirt pattern on top and cut it out. for the ruffled skirt I cut the front out a little longer than the back. I did a wide stitch by hand across the top and pulled it to the same width as the back piece. This created the gather. Once the front was embellished and I sewed a sticky sided piece of Velcro to the back I sewed the two sides together. The last thing I needed to do for page two is add soft sided Velcro to stick the clothes down. They can go anywhere as long as all three pieces of clothing fit onto the page once they are attached to the Velcro. Step 3: Constructing pages 3 and 4, tic- tac- toe First I made my x's and o's. I used the same method as the clothes. I layered three circles for the o's. The main white piece of each O is a 1-3/8" circle and the red circle is 1" and the small white circle is 1/2". I sewed the letters onto the white felt first then cut out the main circle. Once each letter is sew down and cut out I sewed it to a back circle that had a sticky sided piece of Velcro attached. For the main page I sewed down ten pieces of soft sided Velcro. Nine in rows and one on a 1 x 5 strip of red felt. For the grid I used 1/4" strips of white felt. I cut the letters out of the white freehand. Step 4: constructing page 5 & 6, coloring This is the easiest page. I think a book with just this activity would be simple and fun as well. I cut these letters free hand as well. I sewed two 1 x 5 strips of blue together by sewing around the edges. Then I sewed it into place by zig zagging up and down near the edges of the strip. I cut two red circles and sewed them over the zig zag stitches. For the crayon page I started with two strips of red felt, 2-1/2 x 7. I sewed them together by doing a 1/4" seam at the top and bottom. I centered the strip in the middle. Holding it into place I sewed my first line down the middle. Then I sewed three more lines in both directions every 3/4". Step 5: constructing the front and back pages I used a stencil for the lettering on the front. You can choose a font you like and print it out as a pattern. Cut the letters out using the same method as all the other embellishments. I used another white circle to disguise a piece of soft Velcro placed 1/2" down from the top. I left the back plain except for the strap. To make the strap, I cut two 1-1/2" x 5" strips. Holding them together I rounded one end using the curve of one of my tic-tac-toe circles as a guide. I embellished one strip with two smaller circles, the same sizes used in tic-tac-toe. After adding a piece of sticky velcro to the other strip I sewed the two pieces together. I sewed the strap 1/4" down from the top of the back piece after finding the middle. I sewed a triangle and then an x in the middle, to secure it. Step 6: sewing the pages together I wasn't able to get a good picture of this step. What I did was stack my pages up, back sides together, as if they were sewn together in the book. The cover will be on top and the back on the bottom. Then I sewed the pages together. The front page was on the other side of the paper doll. The clothes were on the other side of the x's and o's. The tic-tac-toe was on the other side of the note book page. And the crayons were on the other side of the back. *Sew the pages together by sewing the top bottom and outer side of the pages 1/4". DO NOT sew up the inner side of the pages. Be careful. I had to unpick a page or two. When you are done you will now have four double sided pages.Step 7: binding the book I started by connecting the two outer pages. I tucked a 2" x 7" strip into the inner openings of the pages. I evenly tucked the felt into both sides till there was 1/2" between the two pages. Then I sewed a 1/4" seam down both pages. I repeated this step with the two inner pages. Finally, I lined up the middle pages on top of the outer pages and sewed a seam down the middle.Step 8: cover the binding (this step isn't necessary but it helps finish off the book) I cut two 3-1/2" x 7" strips. I sewed them together with a 1/4" seam around the edges. I positioned the strip were I wanted it and hand stitched it into place. Finally done! I hope yours is well loved. I am so glad some of you are wanting to make your own food face. They are fun and super easy to make. What you need: -A white ceramic plate ( I got mine at Walmart for $1.70 each) -Pebeo Porcelaine paint pens , I used black, brown, and blue (I got mine at Micheals with a coupon) -A photo of someone -printer -sharpie marker -pencil -ball point pen Her is what I did: First I printed off a picture of the face I wanted to use. I made it black and white and sized it to fit on the plate. Then I traced the main features of the face with a sharpie marker. Next I turned the page over and scribbled over all the lines with my pencil. You'll want it as dark as you can. I flipped the picture back over cut it out and traced over my lines again with a pen. Okay , this picture is really bad. I couldn't get my camera to pick up the small lines on the bright white plate. But if you look really close you can see how the face image is now on my plate. I followed the same process for the names. Next, I went over the pencil markings with the paint pens and colored in a few of the features. Following the Pens instructions, I let the paint dry for 24 hours, then baked them for 35 minutes in a 300 degree oven. Now all you have to do is dress them up and have some fun! *They are dishwasher safe. Wow, I have a whole lot of cuteness to show you today! Keely from The Wilkins made not one but three awesome quiet books. Each of them is so cute and looks so fun to play with! And I love each of the covers she made - the fox, the viking ship, and the panda. Any kid who saw the cover of these quiet books would want to play with the pages inside. Check out all this awesomeness! First Quiet Book: Second Quiet Book: Third Quiet Book: Interview What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence. Keely: I'm a wife and mother who is unable to sit still for long and happiest when I have my family around me and a project underway. Who did you make these quiets book for? How old are they? I made them for three children. Two of them are for my sons, who are both quite young (2 months and 18 months). One is geared toward an older level (which neither of my sons is really at yet, but they will grow into it) and the other is for younger kids (it's about right for my older son right now). The third is for my niece who is also too young for it right now (6 months), but will grow into it. It is a mix of the two books I made for my boys, but it's a little more girly. Most of her pages are the same as the pages in my boys' books, but she also has a few unique pages. What's your level of sewing experience? Intermediate: I've been sewing with my mom since I was in elementary school, but that was mostly quilting and I'm not nearly as good as she is. I started working with felt a lot just a few years ago. I really enjoy sewing by hand so felt has been a fun medium to work with. How long did it take you? (How many hours total? Spread over how many days?) I started these book sometime in the summer while I was pregnant with my second son. I was so worried that with two little boys under 18 months old, I would never have time to work on projects again that I went on a frenzy of projects while my older son was napping or in bed. Needless to say, the three quiet books were my biggest projects and I was able to finish all but the binding before my son was born. For all three books, it probably took 3 or 4 months working for 2-3 hours each day. Some days I didn't get to work at all, and sometimes on the weekends I worked a lot more because my husband was home to help with our son. It took longer because my books are completely hand done except that I used my machine to sew the pages to each other. It might have gone faster had I used my machine more. Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? I free-hand cut almost all the felt that I work with. It typically saves me time because I don't have to trace and copy patterns. For the viking ship cover I needed a pattern because it is so detailed. I found a picture of a viking ship online, enlarged it, printed it, and cut it out; then used it as a pattern. I also use a few templates from a blog called ServingPinkLemonade for the toolbox and its tools and the little boy because I just couldn't get the dimensions quite right. I adapted a few ideas from her blog for some of my other pages, but I didn't use her templates (although she does provide them for free). Many of the ideas for my pages were gathered from around Pinterest and other blogs, I just embellished on them to make them more how I wanted, but some pages are my original ideas. How did you bind your quiet books? I sewed two pages together back to back so that the messy backside of each page would be hidden and punched metal grommet eyelets into the pages. I used ribbons strung through the eyelets to tie the pages all together. I like this method because it is sturdy, but allows me to add additional pages to the book if I decide to; also I could update or clean one page at a time. My niece's book is actually the only one that is completely done because it was her Christmas present. I'm still looking for the time (with two little boys needing my attention) to finish binding the other two books. What material are the pages made out of? The actual pages are made from thick non-fusible Pellon. I used this material because I heard that it is more durable and holds its shape better than felt. It can be found at fabric stores with the fusible interfacing and is a really nice material to work with. Unfortunately, Pellon is only made in white, so the background to all my pages is white unless I sewed felt onto it. I used wool felt for all the pictures in the book.A few years ago when I first stared working with felt I used the much less expensive synthetic felt, but found that it doesn't hold its shape as well as wool felt and pills (those little balls that gather up on fabric or on sweaters) very easily with a lot of use. I decided to spend the extra money on wool felt for all these books because I'm able to cut more detailed shapes from it and it stays looking nice much longer. What other materials did you use? Beads, buttons, Velcro, snaps, zippers, and of course embroidery floss. How much did all the supplies cost you? Ouch! I bet I spent close to $100. However, when you consider that I made three books with a total of about 40 pages, this isn't too bad. I have Pellon and felt still left over and plan to eventually make more pages to add into the books. Wool felt costs 3-4 times more than synthetic felt, especially when you buy it in the small squares rather than off the bolt (I did it this way because I needed a wider variety of colors). Had I used synthetic felt, it would have been much less expensive. What's your favorite page? Why? The cover of my boys' book with the viking ship is my favorite even though it doesn't have any activity that goes with it. My husband kept insisting that I do a viking ship, but I kept putting it off because I thought it was much too difficult. I finally cut a pattern out like I described above and spent a lot of time working on all the details of the ship. You might guess by the title that we are taking a trip soon! I am so excited to visit my folks in Texas, but a little wary of how Peanut will travel now that he is more of a big kid. A 3 hour plane ride is a long time to be still for a little boy who spends most days chasing his puppy and playing with his hockey stick! So I decided that along with some other quiet toys, dvd's from my sister in law (thanks Missi!), and PLENTY o' SNACKS, I would make my boy a quiet book. He is 13 months old and loves flip books and taking things out and putting things in, but not quite ready for coloring books (I've tried) so I wanted to be creative yet practical with this project. My requirements were: The book must be interactive and pack alot of activities into each page There should be no parts that can fall or get lost (I had to ammend this rule on one page, but I think we'll be ok) The pages must be able to be taken out and the book should be able to be added to in the future. (I love that the pages can be taken out so in the future if we have 2 kids they can each pick a page and work on them at the same time!) I googled images of quiet books, searched them on pinterest, and just thought about what my little one likes best. The travel pillow addition was a happy accident. The whole book is made from thrift store felt, along with a few fasteners and some old clothes. I had some very soft fleece and thought that maybe a cover would be good to keep it clean. I was going to do a zipper and handles, but quite frankly I was tired and that just seemed a bit much. I just decided on a simple bag and when I folded the fleece over the book to measure it I realized it made a great little pillow! The material is thick and the metal rings are inside the pages so they cannot be felt at all! So without further ado: Travel Pillow Matching balloons (when you use felt you only have to use the rough side of velcro to stick) and a ribbon to tie. All the balloon strings are long enough to reach the "wrong" colors to mix and match. Mr. Potato Head with a zippered suitcase for his parts. I didn't attach the parts with string because I knew it would get tangled, but the felt cutouts are no biggie to replace if we lose a few! The inspiration for this page came from a picture of a fishtank page with fish that could be slid along a string. Button flowers. You can't see in the picture, but each flower is attached by a thread so it will not get lost. The threads are long enough to reach any button on the page. This page was entirely my own idea and I am so happy with the way it turned out. Peanut loves "Itsy Bitsy Spider" so I knew that we should have a page in it's honor. The pipes are unattached on the side closest to spine so spider can sneak into them and also the grass is a pocket. The sun also hides in a pocket until it's ready to come out. The glove page is probably my least favorite because I just don't think it's as cute as the others. However, this has no bearing on how Peanut will like it, and I suspect he will enjoy putting on the gloves and also playing peekaboo with the cat face. There is also a removable (velcro) purple hand under the top glove. I love these colors together. Just more fasteners and bows to work with. I had not attached the overalls hooks before and bent one of the buttons in the process slightly, but it works fine. Ok, this is my "aesthetic" favorite...I really thought that this page would be tons of work, but I knew it was a must. I love the barnyard theme and we are working on animal sounds (right now all the animals make a monkey sound, smile). I wanted to include finger puppets as well, but couldn't figure out where to store them. I really didn't want to do a whole other page, but wanted them to travel in the book somehow. So finally I realized that if I left the roof of the barn un-sewn I could use it as a storage pocket. I put velcro on to secure it when shut. It ended up being a quick, easy page and Im glad I didn't talk myself out of it! My finger puppets are rather amateurish, but it was my first time and as I said before I was running out of steam so I am proud that I got a handful done. They are sewn around the edges and I also used hot glue for some of the facial features. So there it is. I am not kidding myself into thinking that this book will entertain a 13 month old for an entire 3 hours, but I hope it will help. And truly I think it is the most fun I have ever had sewing. I love the combination of creativity and construction and how the pages felt (pardon the pun) like mini projects. Hope this inspires you to make the most of some quiet time...if you have any!
