A collection of do-it-yourself clever brain teasers and puzzles that kids will love. Who knows? These logical conundrums might even stump parents.
Chimpanzees are our closest relative in the animal kingdom, sharing around 98% of human DNA. These intelligent great apes live in the tropical rainforests, grasslands and woodlands of western and Central Africa, with a large concentration along the Zaire river. Chimpanzees are social animals who care for their offspring for years, and they live in hierarchical social groups of between 16 to 100 individuals. There is always a dominant male in each group, and lower-ranking males will sometimes work together to try to oust the leader from his position! These clever animals have fascinated scientists for years. Studies have discovered that chimpanzees can create and use tools, intentionally treat illnesses with medicine and have other abilities which we once thought were unique to humans. Chimpanzees even like to entertain themselves by solving puzzles! Communication is another big part of chimpanzee life, and they use facial expressions, hand-clapping, body language and kissing to communicate with each other. Chimpanzees are omnivores. They eat mostly plant-based foods, but they also enjoy eating insects, eggs, honey and meat. Fruit makes up 50% of their daily diet. Although chimpanzees tend to walk on all fours (knuckle-walking), they are also capable of walking upright. Males can be as tall as 1.6 m (5 ft 3 in) when standing. Due to deforestation and illegal trading, chimpanzees are now an endangered species. There were around 2 million chimpanzees living in the wild at the beginning of the 20th century, and that number has dropped to between 170,000 and 300,000. Some Fun Facts Chimpanzees can recognise themselves in a mirror (unlike most animals). One chimp, Washoe, learned approximately 350 words of sign language. She also used her communication skills to form friendships with humans. When chimpanzees are scared, they show a grin of fear, similar to a nervous smile that a human might have in a tense situation. The human race is the biggest threat to chimpanzees, but they are also hunted by leopards and other big cats. Chimpanzees sleep in nests of leaves, and usually make a fresh, clean bed each day! Much of what we know now about chimpanzees was discovered by Jane Goodall, who dedicated her life to working with chimps and their conservation. You can learn about her here in our Famous People section! Our Chimpanzee Resources

This escape room is a scavenger hunt style activity that includes six interactive challenges related to perspective-taking skills, including seeing different perspectives, changing your own perspective, empathy, and more. Students work together to solve a variety of puzzles and challenges in order to discover the secret phrase to unlock the door and win the challenge in a specified amount of time. This escape room activity is ideal for small groups, advisory periods, or resource rooms. A whole-class version is also included! What is an Escape Room? An escape room activity is a challenge that allows kids to work together solving a variety of puzzles in order to "break out" of a room. After each puzzle is solved, they will get a clue that leads them to a new location. Each new location includes a keyword to win or "escape" the room and a new puzzle. Escape rooms are great to have kids and young adults working collaboratively using their critical thinking skills. How Does It Work? There are two versions included: One for a small group (such as a resource room or advisory group) and one for a whole class. The puzzles and activities are all the same, but the setup is a bit different! Choose which works best for your learners. How to Use for Small Groups Directions with visual directions are included to make the setup as easy as possible! To set up, you will print and put together each puzzle set in an envelope. Then, you will hide each envelope in its designated location. For example, you might hide one clue near a window or by a pencil sharpener! It is recommended to hide the envelopes so that students have to search in the designated location to find. How to Use for Whole Classes For the whole-class version, you will create sets of envelopes for each group with the clues and materials inside. Each group will work on the challenges together. When a challenge is finished and they know the "password", they will raise their hand to tell you privately. If they have the correct password, they will advance to another challenge and you will give them that envelope! Best of all, each group can be working on different challenges, as you do not have to go in order. How Much Prep is Required? You will need to print and cut the puzzles, using the visual guide to help you. Then, you will need to place them in envelopes or folders so that groups will work on only one challenge at a time. Note that some puzzles you can choose to just leave as is without cutting to reduce your prep! Note that a separate version is included for you to write in your own key phrase. This is important if you are running multiple groups throughout the day and don't want any students to "spoil" the keyword for the challenge. Incorporate Skills for Perspective-Taking Skills Skills for perspective taking are incorporated into every puzzle and challenge! Students will discuss and learn about understanding perspective-taking, how to see different perspectives, being able to change your own perspective, respect the opinion of others, develop empathy, and use perspective-taking skills to solve conflicts. Both color and black/white versions are included! ***************************************************************************** Tips for Customers! { Click here to follow my store! } If you have questions or problems please contact me through Product Q & A and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!
