I was first introduced to the idea of creating Animal Dioramas when my son (who was a first grader at the time), brought home a shoebox and a basic instruction sheet from his teacher to create a diorama of any animal and its natural habitat. Being a mom, I was so excited about the opportunity to help my son create something he was so excited about! Being a teacher, I knew that I had to do a project like this with my own students, but I had no idea where to start. I shared the idea with my second grade colleagues, and they all loved it! We worked together to create a basic letter to send home to parents, but struggled to find just the right way to show students exactly what the project is and how to do it. (I don't know about your class, but I have to break everything into very small steps for most of my kiddos!) So, I decided to create a unit that would have everything you could ever need for doing a project like this. Trust me, if you want to do this project with your class - this unit will save you SO much time and make your life so much easier! To start off, our science focus for the entire month is ANIMALS! We spent time reading about animals and life cycles in our science books, and this week we are learning all about animal habitats. I found some really amazing videos on habitats on our district portal, but you can also find some really cute and informative videos here (around 3-5 minutes each): Animals and their Habitats Habitats Home Sweet Habitat Earlier this week, I sent home a letter to parents to let them know that we will be starting our dioramas soon! I also asked parents to send shoe boxes to school with their child, if possible. You may want to send home your parent letter 1-2 weeks before you intend to send home the assignment. I like to send everything home with the student on a Friday, so they have the weekend to start gathering supplies and begin working on their project. I usually give students 3-4 weeks to complete the project at home. My student dioramas are due on May 6th, which gives me plenty of time to have them present their projects and have them on display for our Open House the following week! After that, I'll be happy to send them home with the students. This is what I sent home with the students to kick off our Animal Diorama and Research Report Project! (Of course I stapled them together so the pages didn't go flying all over the place when they went outside, but for the purpose of this photo - I laid them out so you can see them!) That's it! Easy-peasy! Just send the directions for the project, the animal research report poster, the student grading rubric, and the presentation outline home and have your students work on their projects on their own time. My second grade team and I decided to have one day where we all will keep our classrooms open or an hour or so after school so students can come in and work on their projects, use classroom supplies, get help with research, etc. We will be doing the majority of the research in the classroom, and will be writing the research reports as well. I just prefer to do that part with the students, so I can guide them through the writing process. The majority of our research will be done on the internet during our computer lab time. I've found these websites to be VERY helpful and easy for kids to find the information they need for their reports! A-Z Animals Kids National Geographic - Animals San Diego Zoo: Animals A-Z While we are in the computer lab, I had the students record their research information on this sheet: Once the students had recorded all of their information, we spent the next day taking their key ideas and putting them into complete sentences about their animals. I also have a simpler version if that works better for your class! From there, the students would write their final draft on a separate sheet of paper (also included in the unit). You can find all of these pages, grading rubrics, parent letters, as well as a how-to instructional presentation to show your students how to do the project HERE! Now, the only question is... what will your students create?

I blame @bowmanimal for all of this. A few months ago he blogged about conceptualizing volume in calculus before formalizing. At the time, I had just started looking over past AP Calc exams, wondering how I was going introduce volume (solids with known cross sections and solids of revolution). Volume is a calculus topic I've not taught before, and I want my students to do more than memorize the formulas. Because, as our own textbook puts it so beautifully: "Some students try to learn calculus as if it were simply a collection of new formulas. This is unfortunate. If you reduce calculus to the memorization of differentiation and integration formulas, you will miss a great deal of understanding, self-confidence, and satisfaction."[1] Anyway, I tucked Bowman's post in my "Summer Projects" folder, and, well, it's summer now, so I thought I'd best get on with it. Solids with Known Cross Sections Here's what came out of solids with known cross sections: So pretty! The idea is a type of think-pair-share activity where students conceptualize what's going on before throwing the actual mathematical definition at them.[2] I love this because these visuals get glued to your brain. Now when kids see: Find the volume of the solid whose base is the region bounded by y=x^2, y=0, and x=1 and whose cross sections are semicircles perpendicular to the x-axis. They're less likely to throw in the towel because of all the scary words and more likely to remember that green tornado-looking thing. I hope the conversation that goes on in their darling little heads is, "Need to add an infinite number of infinitesimally thin semicircles...no prob...I've got the tool for infinite sums, an integral, baby! Thanks, Uncle Leibniz!" Bowman shares some great tips for constructing these solids (be sure to read his responses in the comments section, too), but I thought I'd add some hints that helped me, if you want to make these as well: I could not, for the life of me, get my cross sections to stand using tabs, so I resorted to a hot glue gun, which worked marvelously. The cross sections seem pretty sturdy (my cat even tried to snuggle with one of them, and it endured her voracious nuzzling, so I think they might just last a few years...cross your fingers). I splurged and got Ghostline foam board because I'm both anal and a terrible free-hand artist. I did not trust myself to draw nice parabolas without it. They come in packs of two at Hobby Lobby for about $3.50. SQUARES ARE EVIL. Bowman mentioned they were floppy. Indeed, they are. I ended up only taking the squares from 0 to 0.7, instead of 0 to 1 like the other cross sections. This anti-symmetry was deeply depressing, but I couldn't get those darn squares to stay up once they reached a certain size. Le sigh. After students converse about what they've seen on the poster boards, I plan to explore this applet with them as well, so they can see a 2D visualization of the 3D object we've created. Solids of Revolution Since I was already on this volume kick, I started to wonder how I could create a visual that would help students understand the formulas for solids of revolution (taking a graph and rotating it about a given line). The answer? Foam sheets and a wooden skewer: The graph I chose was y=sin(x)+2.5 (from 0 to 2pi) because I wanted the finished product to look kind of a like a vase and I also wanted to maximize the amount of area available to me on my foam sheets (bought in a pack of 65...of which I used all but 2). And also because I wanted to show something other than a polynomial function. Again, I was pretty Type-A about this little project. The foam sheets were 2 mm thick, so I let 2 mm=1 unit and used a compass and my handy dandy graphing calculator to create circles of approximately the correct radii (overboard? Yeah...probably so...). The skewer was the best idea of this project because not only does it serve as a visual for the axis of rotation, but it was super easy to center all the little foam circles on it because of the imprint the compass had already made: 11 down, 52 to go... Again, instead of being scared of the weird words and sometimes weird, unhelpful figures that go along with rotation problems, I hope my students will think, "Just adding up a bunch of super thin (dx!) circles...gonna need pi*r^2 and an integral for that. Thanks again, Uncle."[3] And here is a fantastic Geogebra interactive worksheet we can explore as well. I hope my students gain a great deal from these two summer projects. I know I was really thrilled by the mathematics that was being exposed while constructing them. For example, with known cross sections, decreasing the base by the same amount each time did not create even gaps between cross sections since the rate of change is smaller as we get closer to (differentiable) mins and maxs. I had a similar struggle with the vase: the closer I got to a min or max, the harder it was to get the right radius because the radii were changing so slowly. Hello art educators/teachers/students, I am back to brief you about Design Paper, Art & Design IGCSE 0400 with some samples from my students. _____ Please take note that our school are taking Art & Design IGCSE 0400 for November Series. For our mock exam, I will use the June Series exam questions to prepare my students for the upcoming exams. Above questions were taken from June Series 2016 Examination Referring to the questions above, I worked with my students on selecting the best question for them to do for the mock exam. Please take note (!) Design question requires you to choose what type of product you want to work with and to 'present' from your idea development progress and towards your final piece. You have to use your FIRST-HAND STUDIES when it stated in the question requirement and always encourage your students to expand the research, gathered their pictures, snap the photos, printed out as preparation work references. The truth about the whole set of preparation works and the final piece, I 'DESIGN' MY LAYOUT AND ALL THE SEQUENCES ARE NOT COMING FROM THE CIE OR IGCSE, as a teacher, I think what is the best to meet what the question wants and guide my students towards the aim of each question. As far as my experiences goes, my layout of helping them shows results. Good results. All the results, at the end of the day, based on each of the student ability and capability in presenting their preparation works and final piece. I do a lot of analysis too. Will talk about how to do analysis in next post. _____ I am going to use Reanne, Tian Huey and Yi Ruth art samples to explain further about the progress. Reanne chose question number 4 and spent the time to expand her research about the healthy eating and food. Her idea, at the end of the progress, she is preparing a campaign poster as what the question wants - Grow Cook Eat. (click the picture for a better view) In this prep 1, I always emphasise the important of introduction and the students should write in brief why the choose the question, what is the aim of the whole preparation work and what is their expectation at the end of the final piece. The students will attach some research material in the form of designer's work that inspired them to do the design or any product (as for above - poster) that given them some interesting idea to work with their ideas later on. (click the picture for a better view) These are the details of the First-Hand Studies materials and the drawing/painting of the subject matters ( I think ) should show in first preparation work. LOVE the outcomes by her. (click the picture for a better view) Above shows the close-up of a poster sample, taken from the internet that giving Reanne the inspiration for her upcoming idea development. She used a variety of media to do details on it. E.g, water colour, gel pen, pencil, etc. Reminder (!) Annotation is still important in Design paper as well. Encourage your students to annotate all the process/progress/decision/selection - basically, journal the progress. (click the picture for a better view) Going back to Reanne's Prep 2 - For a poster or front cover book or any printed product, I will encourage my students to study about the font types, the layout templates. From this prep, you can see that Reanne came out with the different type of fonts as well as putting some background and pattern to some of the fonts. She managed to arrange well with the font studies, templates and some studies with the images in it. It is supposed to be a 'technical' studies. (click the picture for a better view) (click the picture for a better view) For the preparation 3 and 4, the students need to combine all the elements they did in prep 1 and 2. The students need to combine the font studies + layout + in co-operate with the subject matter (first -hand studies) You can see, the design paper is very direct and focus. At this prep 3 and 4, encourage your students to re-arrange the idea and emphasise the idea development with an interesting composition, proportion and colour choices. In between the process, we as a teacher, we have to give some design input/knowledge/exposure to help them to learn how to improvise idea from the research and the subject matters.
