You may have noticed me referring a couple of times to a quilt that I've been working on but not blogging about (the un-bloggable quilt). Well its finally finished and its been gifted so I can post about it now. Yay! I've been itching to share this one with you. The quilt is the "Project of Doom" (PoD) Harry Potter bookcase quilt from Fandom in Stitches and it's taken me 18 months on and off to get this king-sized quilt pieced, quilted and finished. So without further ado.. here it is... I was asked to show my Harry Potter: Project of Doom blocks (so far). I started making these blocks back in 2013 and got the first 12 blocks made. I also started embroidering the titles on the books in 2013. Bad me, I stopped making the blocks the week before my oldest son graduated college, and I stopped working on the embroidery that September. I do think I know why I stopped working on the embroidery. One of the titles 'disappeared' while I was doing the embroidery on it. I'd stitched 2 words, then the rest of the letters I was stitching over just vanished. I couldn't figure out what to do, and just dropped the project. Saturday I pulled all the blocks out and took photos of them. I prepped the last few blocks for embroidery, and I took the stitches out of that one block where the lettering disappeared. I started over with a wash away product. It is now waiting it's turn to be stitched. Here are the blocks I have completed so far. I've made 2 of each block, but some of them still haven't been embroidered. I wasn't looking forward to making that block, since I was thinking it probably needed to be done in faux fur. Well, I've been re-reading the series, and discovered that the Monster book of Monsters has a green leather cover. On Friday, I finally found a fabric that looks like green leather. Now to get back to making blocks for this quilt.

We're five months post-move, and things are finally falling in to place! Our dumping ground bedroom is finally cleared out and my studio is functional. I feel so much more at peace having my sanctuary back. Even better, my embroidery machine is back to working condition! The repairman showed us where it was clear the movers had dropped the machine and broken a belt and some other minor pieces, but he fixed everything up and I'm back in the embroidery business. I even got a new sewing machine for Christmas! I told my husband I just wanted a basic machine that has a straight stitch and a zigzag, and maybe a true quarter-inch foot if he can find one. That was the whole of my sewing machine wish list. Instead, I ended up with a Brother DZ2400, so I would say he did a pretty darned good job. However, I think I have a bit of a learning curve ahead of me in preparation for FiS's X-Files Quilt and Stitch Along this January. This is my first sewing/quilting/embroidery machine combo and my first modern machine, so hopefully it's simpler than it looks. I didn't expect to dive back in to the PoD until next year with all the holiday hoopla, but since Christmas presents were all finished up today (and can actually be shared next week!) and I had a few minutes to myself, I sat down for a quick stitch on the machine. I figured Block 10 was a good place to start. The Standard Books of Spells, Levels 1 through 7. And check out that desk: a workspace is finally visible even though this was Ground Zero of our move! How cool is this Patronus? Mine would probably be a raven if I designed it, but Susan saved me the trouble. I do love Jennifer Ofenstein's original patterns for the Standard Books of Spells, but I knew I wanted something embroidered on these and the original patterns are a bit thin width-wise to do that. And Susan over at The Bored Zombie's embroidered books are pretty irresistible. You can find the embroidery files here. The finished block. I have attempted to use this silver-grey fabric several times in different blocks, and hated it every time because of the metallic sheen. I'm not sure why I had about three yards of it, but I was determined to find a place to use it. I think it actually works for these books. Susan's books were beautifully colored and used different fabrics to add to the interest, but I went for a black and white for a simpler effect on this fabric. I had to restitch the first book once because I didn't have enough fabric top and bottom to center it vertically (and I can see that I forgot to trim a thread on it), but they all stitched up really easily. This ended up 13" unfinished, so it will cut in to the next block a bit. I'm not actually measuring my blocks, because I will see how close my rows are in size when they are complete, and if I need to add a book to the end of some rows to make them the same size, that's what I will do. I did finally unearth my PoD box and found my giveaway fabric from this summer! I'm going to go back through those old postings and find the people who entered and send all of you a small stash of fabric for your PoD or other projects. I was asked to show my Harry Potter: Project of Doom blocks (so far). I started making these blocks back in 2013 and got the first 12 blocks made. I also started embroidering the titles on the books in 2013. Bad me, I stopped making the blocks the week before my oldest son graduated college, and I stopped working on the embroidery that September. I do think I know why I stopped working on the embroidery. One of the titles 'disappeared' while I was doing the embroidery on it. I'd stitched 2 words, then the rest of the letters I was stitching over just vanished. I couldn't figure out what to do, and just dropped the project. Saturday I pulled all the blocks out and took photos of them. I prepped the last few blocks for embroidery, and I took the stitches out of that one block where the lettering disappeared. I started over with a wash away product. It is now waiting it's turn to be stitched. Here are the blocks I have completed so far. I've made 2 of each block, but some of them still haven't been embroidered. I wasn't looking forward to making that block, since I was thinking it probably needed to be done in faux fur. Well, I've been re-reading the series, and discovered that the Monster book of Monsters has a green leather cover. On Friday, I finally found a fabric that looks like green leather. Now to get back to making blocks for this quilt.

The Project of Doom was a Harry Potter Block of the Week project that took place on Harry Potter Paper Piecing from January - August 2011. There are 30 patterns in the project and two suggested layouts. The Project of Doom All blocks, layout, etc are designed by Jennifer Ofenstein of Sewhooked. Patterns for personal and non-profit use only.
I really enjoyed this week's block. I had wanted my quilt to have an embroidery pattern I found on Etsy with the major spells of the Harry Potter world, but I wasn't sure how to include it. When Jennifer posted this week's block, I knew it was the perfect spot. Since I left my book open, my spells are escaping! I accidentally put the tops of the words right up at the top of the block without much room for seam allowance, but I think it will look like they are crashing into the shelf above when I assemble the quilt, so I'm pretty content. This is the finished block: Open book block. It's not exactly square, but because I have altered some of the blocks (for example; I widened the book on the left to accommodate more of the unicorn), I will pair it up with another block that was a little over to even it out. When I assemble the quilt, I will add a book to each shelf to make them match up in width. To fit the spells above the book, I had to extend the book cover on the left by about a quarter of an inch. That wouldn't drive me nuts so bad if it weren't perfectly even on the other side, but I think I'm going to make a polyjuice felty potion bottle to sit right there to cover it up. Harry Potter spell embroidery. Pattern by embroideryquotes on Etsy. I got this amazing Harry Potter spells embroidery pattern from embroideryquotes on Etsy. I haven't done a great job of trimming up all the stray threads, but I love the way it turned out. I did have to resize it slightly smaller to fit my hoop, and I used a cotton thread, so there were a few thread breaks. Nothing too dramatic, though. Even so, it must have been meant to be, because I got it all stitched up and almost perfectly placed on my first try. I'm glad I bought lots of this aged book page fabric ... there are a lot of books in this quilt! I am using this fabric on all my books that have pages. It looks like it blends in with the natural background, but there's actually a decent difference between them in real life. I love that it adds a touch of text without being full of in-your-face words. It was hard to choose between this book and the dragon eggs variation, but I think the dragon eggs will end up under my bookshelf when I assemble the quilt. Far Far Away by Windham Fabrics. This unicorn reminds me a bit of illustrations in The Phantom Tollbooth. I adore this fabric, and I got quite a bit of it so I could use some in the girls' new room after we move. It's from Windham Fabrics and it is the "Far Far Away" line. Really pretty, whimsical fabrics. Speaking of fabrics, don't forget to go check out our giveaway post here. I intentionally made many of the books wonky, but this one has always been just a little wonkier than I intended! You will also find the small addition with the background option above the yellow book. If you'd like, it can go all the way to the top of the block by using book fabric instead of background fabric. This is a fun one to use great fabrics and BIG titles! Color variation...Dark Artsy! Block 5 - 2011 Version All original Project of Doom patterns will continue to be available on the Harry Potter page right here on Fandom In Stitches. I will be adding the new versions to the Harry Potter page as we go! Useful Info For best results print with NO SCALING. In Google Drive (where this file is hosted) uncheck “fit to page..” See your printer instructions for more details if needed. Scale included on every page for your convenience. On the actual pattern, WHITE indicates background fabric. All other colors are approximate representations (colors are intentionally light to save ink), but you are welcome to use any fabric colors you may choose. All patterns finish 10" (10 1/2" unfinished). Seam allowance is included. You will need approximately 3 yards of background fabric for individual blocks plus optional quilt border. You'll also need various amounts of scrap fabrics for books and magical objects. To complete your quilt, you will also need 1 yard of “shelf” fabric. 100% quilting cotton is recommended for best results. Fabric amounts are for optional layouts finishing 61”x 78” - 63” x82”. You'll also need various amounts of scrap fabrics for books and magical objects. About the Project of Doom The Project of Doom was a 2011 Harry Potter Quilt rebooted in 2015 as a Quilt Along for Fandom in Stitches. On this page, you will find all 30 of the 2011 Project of Doom Blocks, as well as the 70+ presented in the 2015 Quilt Along and optional layouts, all designed by Jennifer Ofenstein. In addition, you will find MANY supplemental patterns designed by our Fandom in Stitches quilting community to further customize your Harry Potter Bookcase Quit. Useful Info (lots of FAQs here!) for the original PoD (2011 & 2015) patterns: Click on the pattern image or title for the pattern. 2015 patterns designed by Jennifer Ofenstein include all patterns and/or instructions for all versions. For best results print with NO SCALING. In Google Drive (where this file is hosted) uncheck “fit to page.” See your printer instructions for more details if needed. Scale is included on every page for your convenience. On the actual pattern, WHITE indicates the background fabric. All other colors are approximate representations, but you are welcome to use any fabric colors you may choose. For the original PoD (2011 or 2015), you will need approximately 3 yards of background fabric for individual blocks plus an optional quilt border. You'll also need various amounts of scrap fabrics for books and magical objects. Fabric amounts to complete your quilt are included with the layout instructions.
