Wizard Themed Envelope Journal Make this magical envelope journal. All you need are a few envelopes, some basic craft supplies and the Wizard Journal Scrap Pack from My Porch Prints on Etsy. To Start: Make A Quick & Easy Envelope Journal *Also see video at the bottom of this post You can use any color or shape of envelope you like. I chose these black envelopes because black goes nicely with the wizard theme. 1. Choose an envelope as your "cover", open the flap and set it down. Choose another envelope & fold the flap backwards. 2. Remove the adhesive strip. 3. Slide the flap into your "cover" envelope until it is flush. Press down to attach it. Flip envelope like a book page. Take a new envelope, bend the flap backwards and insert it into the previous one. Flip it like a page and repeat the process. Keep doing this until you have the desired number of pages. 4. Once you have the journal finished. Use the flap from the very first "cover" envelope--fold it around to the back of your journal and remove the adhesive strip. This becomes your spine cover! 5. If desired, crease the "spine" to look more like a book. 6. That's it! So easy and cute! Now you have a journal with built-in tuck spots! Page Background Papers Now you can begin preparing your pages for decorating. I printed & cut printable pages from the Wizard Journal Scrap Pack into a size slightly smaller than my envelopes (about 5x7 inches) leaving about a 1/4 inch gap all around when I placed them on my envelopes. To prepare the papers, I colored on a make-up sponge with a black marker and used it to distress the edges. You can also do this with Distress Ink. For the cover, I used craft glue to attach a cut & distressed paper. Then I tied a piece of hemp rope around the cover page and placed a "wax seal" (also from the Wizard Journal Scrap Pack) over the knot. I used a metal file plate (find similar ones here) to highlight the title, attaching it with Gorilla Super Glue. Decorate! Next, I decorated my pages. This is where you can really get creative. I made some flaps & envelopes that open to reveal pictures and more writing spaces. To create the "Book Of Magic" flap, I used to small pieces of paper to make hinges and glued them to the back as shown. Then I hid a small picture of a black bird beneath it. I also used a printed envelope from the scrap pack and one of the "wax" seals. I only glued down part of the seal so that the envelope flap could tuck beneath it. So way back in September we studied all about our five senses and I made a little recording sheet for an anchor chart activity I saw on pinterest from Spotlight on Kindergarten. I made a similar anchor chart and then gave my students some popcorn and we brainstormed ideas while we ate. {any excuse for food in the classroom is ok with me!} Here is our chart we came up with...... Then, I had my students fill out the sheet below choosing one word for each of the five senses from our chart. It's a freebie for you so click on any of the pics to download the recording sheet, as well as colorful graphics for an anchor chart or whatever else you might need. My students then picked one word to write on the popcorn shapes and then we displayed them out in the hallway. This bulletin board was thrown up in a hurry...don't judge. ;) Happy Monday!
Yummy! Look what came in the mail today; Sinopia dry pigments for encaustic. They are so beautiful lined up on the shelf next to my wax area. I just had to share. And another journal page. That too. I was inspired yesterday to shoot several pictures along the Willamette River. I drive this route every time I go to town and it is full of great old buildings. This abandoned Marina was flooded out when the Willamette breached it banks a few years back. It occurs to me that much of what exists along this old stretch of highway is disappearing. A few days ago I promised you a tutorial on making a journal out of used grocery bags which I think are a great material to recycle. Well, here we go. First you carefully open the seams of the grocery bags. (or you can just rip them open like I did) Tear them to size. My size was 10" x 15 1/2 ". They'll be folded in half. I got 3 sheets that size out of each bag so it took 6 bags to make the journal. Next I soaked each sheet in water and squeezed it out. Then I hung the sheets on a rod in my studio to dry. Next I ironed out each sheet with a little spray and my iron. Here are all the sheets folded and stacked into 3 signatures of 6 each. After sewing the signatures in a coptic stitch (there are many tutorials on that online. Just google "coptic stitch" and choose one) --- I cut a sheet of tarleton (use whatever you have. Fabric, cheesecloth - I happen to have tarleton because I'm a printmaker but I would have used anything else that presented itself equally) - anyhow, cut a piece of something and get a sheet of cardboard to fashion a spine so you'll know which end of the book is which. Here is the spine cut out. Dont measure. This isn't that kind of a book. Slather gel this way and that until the spine is roughly in the spinal area and the fabric is glued to the cover. Let it dry. It's gonna be a wet puppy. Ta Da! You now have a floppy, friendly, fabulous book in which to gather up all your ideas and flotsam. Throw it in your purse, let your friends draw in it, do anything but treat it like it's a big deal. This journal is just for sloppiness. (come to the wild side!!) Another shot of 99E looking south toward the motel that has never been open in the 10 years I've lived here. We refer to it as the Bates Motel and joke that the government uses it as a witness relocation house. You never see anyone outside but the roses are always pruned. Very straaaaange. Ciao!
