I'm breaking out of my blogging silence today with a post about a task I call "Word Graffiti." This activity is perfect before you have your students read anything with some vocabulary they've not seen before. I had my class read a short article I wrote on the Holocaust. There were some words I felt I needed to include in the text, but I knew they wouldn't have heard them in any other context. The words were: - corruption - devastation - inhumane - vainly - revolt - ghettos I wrote these words each on a whiteboard and placed them on table groups around the room. You could do the same with chart paper, I was just trying to be a bit environmentally friendly. Students traveled the room in table groups, and I gave them about 3-5 minutes per board. Each group had only 1 white board marker to use, so they had to work together to decide what they wanted to write. You can put down anything you think the word means or reminds you of. You are to read what groups before you wrote, but you don't need to agree with their ideas. That being said, you can't erase them either. As you can see, there were a lot of good connections and ideas floating around my classroom. My favourite is "electricity" for "revolt" because of the "volt" part of the word. Great ideas, but many were way off. I did have one student who knew "vainly" because I guess her mother tells her she is vain for looking in mirrors all the time. Ha! This task took us about 45 minutes from starting instructions to final discussion. We didn't read the article that day. However, the next day, after a night of processing they were all pros with those 6 big words! And, months later, they all still know what each 6 mean, which is most important. What do you do to get your students thinking about vocab before reading?

Children with learning disabilities have a significantly higher level of primitive retained reflexes compared to other children (Hickey & Feldhacker, 2021). When we think of reflexes, we may envision being tapped on the knee at the doctor's office, or yanking our hand away from a hot stove. These reflexes allow our bodies and brains to complete motor movements without having to consciously think about it. Primitive reflexes are named for the part of the brain in which they originate - the primitive brain (or brainstem). In typically developing children, these reflexes are automatically demonstrated when they are presented with specific stimuli. Each reflex serves a developmental or evolutionary purpose. However, if integration does not occur, a list of involuntary symptoms that impact the trajectory of development may persist. This resource was created by two pediatric occupational therapists to serve as a digestible, informative resource on primitive reflexes, signs and symptoms of retention, and activities and exercises to encourage intervention. This download includes: General overview of primitive reflexes Causes of retained reflexes Signs of retained reflexes Integration intervention exercises (including notes and considerations!) DESCRIPTIONThese Miffy magnets are a great gift for anyone. An ode to two Dutch icons: Royal Delft and Miffy combined in one Delft Blue magnet. Miffy is reading a gook book on this magnet. Royal Delft magnets are made with a transfer technique. DETAILS- Craftsmanship: Handmade & decorated with a transfer designed by a Royal Delft master painter.- Size: 3"× 2" × 0.4"- Color: Delft Blue- Handmade in Netherlands- From the Nijntje (Miffy) collection About Royal Delft's CraftmanshipRoyal Delft has been creating high-quality Delft Blue since 1653. The craft of painting is at the core of the company, although other decoration techniques have been developed over the years to create high-end earthenware. Carry on reading to discover the two different techniques that Royal Delft uses to this very day to make unique blue and white objects. Transfer TechniqueThe decoration on these products is applied by using a transfer technique that was developed in England in the 18th century. In those days an engraved copper sheet with wet ink was pressed on tissue paper and afterwards the tissue paper was pressed on a ceramic surface. Finally, the ceramics were fired at a low temperature and the decoration appeared on the product. Nowadays the transfer is made with a screen print.

Is your classroom such a fun and amazing place that your kiddos won't stop talking about it? What a wonderful feeling right? Until the noise level gets so out of control that you can't even hear yourself think! Sometimes it's tough to establish clear voice level expectations, so the Blabber Brush is here to help! The Blabber Brush is an easy tool that will help you establish clear expectations with your students about where their voice level should be while they are working. All you have to do is attach a small piece of velco to each colored paint and the brush, and move the paint brush to the color you would like them to be at. Each color means a different level: Green(speaking at an indoor voice level) Yellow(whispering quietly to their neighbors) Red(quiet and mindful work) With the same concept as a stop light, your students can clearly see at all times where you would like their voice level to be. This is not a classroom management tool that is meant to be used when your kiddos get too loud. Meaning, it is not intended to have your students start on Green, and if they get too loud they get moved down to yellow or red. Instead, it is up to you to explain to them that when the Blabber Brush is on Red, that simply means that you would like them to be quiet and extra focused on their work- they are not in trouble (IMPORTANT to explain that!) This 'Blabber Brush' comes in 3 different formats (JPG, PDF, & PNG) and 3 different sizes (18"x24", 11"x17", & 10.5"x11).
I'm in the middle of my "Symbols of Canada" unit with my Grade 1's. It has been a learning experience for me, as I haven't taught Grade 1 since I was a student teacher, but it has been really fun! I'm enjoying bringing in resources for my kids all about Canada and British Columbia. Last week, I showed them "O Canada" from Ted Harrison, a Canadian painter who recently passed away. I love Harrison's paintings. They are full of colour and his style is so distinctive. As a class, we discussed the images in the book and pointed out Canadian landscapes and symbols. This week, I brought in "S is for Spirit Bear" by G. Gregory Roberts and Bob Doucet. While Ted Harrison's book has a lot of images of Northern Canada, "S is for Spirit Bear" focusses on British Columbia. It is an Alphabet Book of B.C. with beautiful illustrations by Bob Doucet. We live in B.C. and my students could relate to a lot of the images in the book. Anyone who lives on Vancouver Island will recognize the next image of the BC Ferries. I live in Victoria - B.C.'s capital city. We are on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. My kids were very excited to tell us all about their experiences taking the ferry to Vancouver, to visit family, and to other destinations. We've also been working our way through a Canada booklet I created (that you can download for free here). The booklet has 8 pages altogether, with information about the RCMP, Canadian coins, totem poles, and other symbols. This week, we completed the following page. We discussed the maple leaf and the beaver as important Canadian symbols. We also talked about where we could find these symbols (on money, on the flag, etc.). When the students were finished their page, we made beavers for a class display. I made one as a demo, using heart shapes for the face, nose, and teeth. Their beavers turned out adorable! This is how the display looked when it was finished. I have to say, I was nervous to go down to primary, but it has been a lot of fun. I'm only with this class on Fridays, and I'm sad that we only have 14 Fridays left until the end of the school year. It doesn't seem like much time at all!

*Google Slides and Print Option* *Rubric Added!* About this Product This product came as a result of my students’ love of the biography series “Who Was…?” If you have not looked into this series, I recommend that you do! They are a fun, easy read that offers an engaging way for students to learn about historical figures and important people. Although this product is based on this series, this product could be used for any biography book or project. This is a nice way to integrate Reading, Writing, and Social Studies.🛑 Are you a member of the TLL Membership? These materials are already included. If you are not a member, click here to learn more. The TLL Membership gives you an all-access pass to hundreds of ELA resources for teachers in Grades 3-5. How I Used this Product In my 3rd Grade classroom, I used multiple copies of the same book or books and paired students in partnerships. In my school, we have a 30 minute Reading Intervention Block. I began this project with students who were not pulled out or working with me in small groups during this time. This was a nice way for students to work independently or in partnerships. It also created an extension for what they could already do as readers. Plus, they had so much fun! I let them work on this project in their partnerships. This held several benefits. Many students who were not pulled out or working in small groups tend to be higher level students OR students who have untapped potential. Allowing them to work on a project like this can extend their learning, as well as find new ways to enjoy reading. While other students had special groups or went to see other teachers, it was nice for these students to have their own project too. The Poster Page is a template that you could use for students to turn in with the essay or you could use this as a planning page and then have students create a larger poster on their own. I assigned it as homework and was pleasantly surprised at what my students turned in. I saw a wonderful increase in engagement by students who had shown little motivation or enthusiasm for reading. You can see the photos in the preview or in the product itself. Please know I updated the pages after the photos were taken with more detail and provided the poster template. BIBLE CHARACTER CARDS, VOLUME 1, 2, & 3 I started noticing how much kids like to collect things, and how popular trading cards still were, especially if they had cute characters on them. I began to think about how much of our kids lives are wasted on futile things that are meaningless or even destructive in some cases. But what about heroes of the Bible?
