Good Morning, Blog Hoppin' Buddies! Kerri B from Teacher Bits and Bobs here... Well, it's hard to believe, but it's actually March 3rd! Where has the time gone? When March hits, I immediately go into panic mode because A) that means report cards are right around the corner and I have a TON of work to do (blecch), and B) it is time to start thinking about my Open House theme! At my school, we culminate the year with our Open House 2 weeks before school lets out for the summer, but I start planning and prepping for the big event WAAAYYY early, because Open House is my most favoritest thing ever! I love transforming my room into a place that literally makes my kids say "ooohh, aaahhh" when they see it, and I also love the satisfaction that comes from engaging my kids in an 8 week long thematic unit that includes language arts, math, science, writing, and (of course) most importantly, ART! Last year I developed my Rainforest Fun! Art and Writing Unit, after years of teaching my kids about the rainforest and turning my room into a rainforest every year for Open House. Here are some pictures of last year's Rainforest transformation... (Disclaimer: I am not a patterned art type of gal. All of the art projects my kiddies do are the "I do, you do" step cut method, which makes their art sooo much more original and unique, I think!) Yup!! The rainforest literally threw up in my room! I love it!! My kids EAT. IT. UP. every year, and they learn so so much about the rainforest. I am getting excited just thinking about teaching it again this year!! If you are interested in transforming your classroom into a living rainforest, then you can check this out... In addition to directions for all of the 10 art projects you see above you, this unit includes all sorts of writing activities for lots of different rainforest animals, which you can save and make into a rainforest book for your kiddos! I also have my companion Rainforest Fun! Math Literacy Centers available as a companion to my Art and Writing Unit, to extend the rainforest fun just a little bit further! :) Thanks for checking out my rainforest ideas! I hope you all have a wonderful Open House this year, whatever theme you choose to do! It's a such a memorable experience for our students, isn't it?? :) Kerri B
This guide will provide an overview of ux research, why it’s important, how to start User Experience research, and various UX research methods and tools.
I once had a cat use her litter box and then come sit on a student’s research paper. I drew a little purple arrow to the spot and wrote “Sorry about that.” Part of me thought, Well, that’s what it is anyway, so branding it seems fitting. Adolescents’ research papers are usually more than terrible. […]
Last summer I attended a GT training and was introduced to choice boards! I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! I think that students are more engaged and even challenge themselves more when they are given choices. The great thing is....they aren't just for GT students. Choice boards work similar to tic-tac-toe; the student completes 3 activities in a row {up, down, diagonal} They can be adapted for ALL students and actually lend themselves well to differentiated instruction. On Tuesday, I will be attending another GT training specifically on choice boards and differentiated instruction {I'm super pumped about it!} I can't wait to learn more about these learning tools! {I promise to share what I learn!} Choice boards can be set up in many different ways. You can base them off of abilities, learning styles, intelligences, and even levels of questioning. I have found it easier, if I focus on just one of these types. When creating the board, you want to plan out what type of activity each square will focus on. {You don't want to have 2 of the same type of activities in a row} The goal of the CBs are to have equally acceptable activities that you want the students to complete that are similar end products, but have varying ways to accomplish the final product. {For example, you are studying the Alamo. Students could choose activities from writing a diary from the viewpoint of being in the battle, recreating a model of the Alamo, creating a movie, etc.}The wonderful thing about CBs though...students can choose an activity they are willing to complete {taking into consideration their own likes/learning style/intelligence}, but they will have 2 other activities they will need to complete that will focus on other skills that they possibly may need to strengthen {but at the very least they're practicing other skills}! It's a win-win situation! I recently put the choice boards I created for my homework reader's responses in my shop. My students are required to read 20 min nightly, however I found that many of them weren't really reading every night! These choice boards give student's different options to respond to their books, while focusing on varying skills. I've also included 4 blank {editable} choice boards so that you can create your own boards! .....And I used the adorable sneakers clipart to jazz them up from KPM Doodles {love her stuff!} Here is an example template of how to begin creating a choice board based on Multiple Intelligences: Source: Dare to Differentiate Here are some great resources: Dare to Differentiate (AWESOME site for resources!) HISTORY MYSTERY – U.S. Edition combines critical thinking with research skills. It was developed as an enrichment unit for intermediate grade students and conducted as a competition among those classes. However, it will work equally well in self-contained classrooms. From colonial to contemporary times, these mystery figures represent inventors, scientists, presidents, pioneers, athletes, men, women, African Americans, and Native Americans. CONTENTS 15 pages of clues; 5 clues/page + solution 1 file storage label HOW IT WORKS Copy the clues for the week. Cut them apart. Distribute 1 clue each day, following the numbers on the clue sheet. There is 1 clue for each day of the school week. Score the competition as follows: Correct answer on day 1 = 5 points Correct answer on day 2 = 4 points Correct answer on day 3 = 3 points Correct answer on day 4 = 2 points Correct answer on day 5 = 1 point Create a chart to show the accumulating scores. Enter the scores AFTER the 5th clue is given. Announce or post the correct answer the following Monday, or just before school is dismissed on Friday. HOW TO USE THIS PRODUCT Conduct this activity as an enrichment opportunity for all upper grade students. This is most easily done by an enrichment specialist or librarian. Invite healthy competition by posting the score each week for participating classes. Self-contained classrooms can invite every student to join in on the fun. Or, to reduce your workload, create teams within your class. The collaboration is valuable learning, too! Grade level classes may wish to challenge each other. All participating classroom teachers can manage the contest. This product is also fabulous for fast finishers. Give them something challenging, fun, and worthwhile to do.
