Congruent Triangles (SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, and HL) Cut and Paste Using diagram markings and given information, students will practice determining whether triangles are congruent by Side-Side-Side (SSS), Side-Angle-Side (SAS), Angle-Side-Angle (ASA), Angle-Angle-Side (AAS), or Hypotenuse-Leg (HL). Simply give each student the diagrams sheet and the template. They cut out the 18 diagrams, sort them by which postulate or theorem proves them congruent (if possible), determine the congruency statement, then paste on to the template using the row and column headings. Because of the congruency statements, there is only ONE correct answer to this activity. I numbered the diagrams so it will be easier to check their work. This activity was designed for a high school level geometry class. It works perfect in conjunction with my Congruent Triangles Unit Bundle! I have been struggling to find a lesson plan for teaching SSS, SAS, ASA & AAS for about a week. I have been teaching geometry about 12 of my 14 years and have yet to find a lesson that I truly love, that my students buy into easily. Early in my career, I went straight by the (text) book. As a teacher that likes to use manipulatives, I have used straws and chenille stems to have them "discover" which of the 6 abbreviations actually worked every time. That lesson works with certain kids and I didn't feel that this year's students would like it. It seems every year the students get more and more resistant to reading and following instructions step-by-step! So, as a seasoned procrastinator, I designed today's lesson last night, printed it out, revamp, printed again, then photocopied before school this morning on my famous colored paper. I don't want to get too excited, but they seemed to like it and did well identifying all 6 shortcuts (including SSA and AAA). Here's how the class period rolled. As the students walked in, I told them to pick up one of each sheet. After attendance, I briefly explained congruent triangles and how they could be congruent by SASASA, but that we only needed 3 letters. I let them tell me the 6 combinations. I drew pics of 2 triangles for each, showing the appropriate tick marks. At this point, I told them to cut out the 10 squares and place them on the other half sheet in the correct column. As they worked, I walked around checking answers and moving the incorrect ones for them to try again. Some had a couple wrong, some didn't even have but a couple correct. For those, I explained one or two and they were able to get the rest correct. If I gave them the go-ahead, they glued the squares down, then glued/taped the activity into their INB. This activity can be found at my TPT store. After everyone was done, I explained that 2 of the shortcuts (SSA and AAA) were not guarantees that the triangles were congruent and that if something doesn't work every time, we don't use it in math. The next activity was a worksheet with 2 congruent triangles for each problem. They had to identify the shortcut and the name of the triangle that was congruent to the first one. The letters of the triangles were written at the bottom to complete a statement. It is an awesome self-checking worksheet that I found at Math Teacher Mambo's blog and my kids really enjoyed it.

I'm proud of this puzzle sheet I just made, and I like the self correcting aspect of these things. I think that if I had 20 more hours each day, I could spend my time making these types of things up. Notice that it basically has the exact same pictures from the previous sheet, but now the students have to place the vertices in order and determine what type of triangle congruence it is. After we had our day of constructing triangles in geometry to see if they were all congruent or not, and after we discussed how to read information, then I had the kids learn about the various postulates and theorems (SAS, SSS, ...). THEN they're ready for this puzzle just to see if they can piece things together. If they complete the congruence statement with the triangle vertices in the right order, and if they correctly place them on the blanks at the bottom, then an interesting fact appears. (UPDATE: yeesh! There was a typo on the picture in #10, but it's fixed now in the download.)

"…They called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith..." ~Acts 14:27 Last October, Pope Benedict declared that a "Year of Faith" will be celebrated from October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013. With this overarching theme, some fellow DREs and I decided to run with the idea by providing resources surrounding the Creed at our upcoming training night. So, I am working on creating some activities that emphasize what we believe based on the Nicene Creed. Project One: A mobile that draws attention to the Trinity in the structure of the Creed. It contains the entire text, and shows what we believe about God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Directions: 1. Print out the document linked below on cardstock, one set for each child. 2. It is easier to copy the circles back to back, but if you can't do that, cut them out and glue them together. 3. Color all of the pieces. The top piece gets folded in half. 4. Then use a small hole punch to add a hole everywhere there is an X. 5. Cut out the center circle of a paper plate and punch five holes in it according to this diagram: 6. Two holes equally spaced along the inner circle are where you attach the top triangle: 7. Three holes spaced like an equilateral triangle along the outside circle are where you attach the three circles. It should balanced when you hang it. Here are the links to the printables:
