I love my 10 drawer rolling cart organization bin! I actually have two of them in my classroom. These carts can be used to store so many great things! You can store supplies, colored papers, worksheets, teacher copies, and more! You can purchase these carts in multiple colors or in solid black or white. The drawers also come in two different sizes. This year I made these cute drawer labels. They fit perfectly on the front of both size drawers. Here are some pictures of my carts with the labels on them... I have the days of the week labeled on this cart. I place each day's worksheets in the correct drawer. By using this cart it helps me plan and organize two weeks in advance. Apple Day is such a fun, fall-festive activity that is always a hit in first grade. It's so simple to integrate reading, writing, and science into the day.
This past week, we started a new personal narrative writing unit all about my many memorable firsts. I began this unit with a hook to engage student interest--we talked about roller coasters. Who doesn't have a love-hate relationship with a good ol' roller coaster? Especially in a room of second graders, the feelings are unanimous. "Roller coasters are SO MUCH FUN!" We talked about what it was like to go on a roller coaster for the very first time--how that wait in line feels like forever; how when you get into the cart and put on the seatbelt, your heart starts to race; how as the coaster slowly goes clickit-clackity up the tracks, you are thinking "We are going up so high!" and your heart is beating out of your chest; how at the very top it feels like the world stops for just a moment, and then woosh!; how you scream at the top of your lungs as you zoom down the track and loop upside down. I shared my personal story of the first time I went on the roller coaster The Mantis at Cedar Point, and my students were all in. They couldn't wait to start brainstorming! I modeled how to come up with some ideas to get my students on the right track (no pun intended), and put some common experiences down, like the first time I lost a tooth or the first time I rode a bike, to prevent students from getting "stuck" in a writer's block. Students had to come up with at least 3-5 ideas, but many of my students came up with many more. We did lots of sharing out, and then we each circled one idea on our web that we would write about. The next day, it was time to start some serious planning. I created a pre-writing organizer that would not only engage key information like the "who," the "where," and the "when" but also would engage sensory details right from the get-go. We spent the most time on the "Things on the Outside" section as we went through the five senses. What did I see? Hear? Smell? Feel? Taste? I chose to use the idea of the first time I swam underwater, so I wrote down things like I saw the blue water of the pool, I heard my mom cheering for me, I felt the blazing sun, I smelled chlorine and sunscreen, I tasted salty sweat on my lips as it dripped down my face. Then, it was time for our sequencing organizer to get the meat of our story told using temporal words. I can't wait until we are to the revising/editing portion and can dig into these checklists! Hello Everyone! You should have heard the OOOOH's and AHHHH's today during math. Yes, math!! :) We continued our exploration of symmetry today by creating our own sensational symmetrical shapes. I know you have probably all done this before, but the kids loooooved it, so I thought I'd share. The kids had a plain manilla piece of construction paper. They had to decide whether they wanted to fold their paper to find the line of symmetry vertically or horizontally. Then they got to squirt a few different colors on one side of the line. Next came the mysterious part. They folded the paper again and rubbed the places where they could feel the paint. Then, open the paper back up! Tah-Dah! OOOOH! AHHHH! A quick, easy, and beautiful way to show symmetry. I also wanted to do a quick share of a new ultra mini unit I put together introducing kids to our natural resources. We begin this unit next week. We will be studying this for several weeks, so I will be adding to it as we go along, but this 29 page cross curricular unit will help to introduce. Here are a few pics. Yikes! This has been a quite a week in my first grade classroom! I anticipated a bit of chaos due to parent conferences, picture day, and concession sales, but I sure was not prepared for the amount of crazy that ensued yesterday! Here is a little sneak peak at the reason for all the insanity in my room! Meet "Skinky" the skink! (who is a little blurry because I was seriously freaked out by her appearance in my room!) It all started Wednesday afternoon as I was leaving the building. I opened the back door to exit and felt something creepy and smooth race over my foot! I screamed my head off thinking that it was a snake as they have been known to lurk around our back storage area. When I looked down, I was startled to see that I had accidentally let some sort of lizard into the building! Of course, I nearly scared it half to death, so it took off into my teammate's room, which is connected to mine. My favorite custodian was unable to catch him, so I went home and told my husband the crazy story. He lovingly assured me that the lizard would definitely be long gone from my room by the next morning. Little did he know that I'm not that lucky... So, yesterday started out pretty normal. I warned my kiddos as well as my principal and teammate next door about the lizard on the loose. They all laughed and thought I was crazy for worrying so much about it. As the day went on, I was a little jumpy, but I tried to push the thought of the creepy creature out of my mind. That is, until our afternoon read-aloud time. As I went to sit down on my rocking chair, I suddenly realized that I was about to sit on the intruding lizard!! It was all curled up, smack in the middle of the cushion on my seat! So much for calm, structured teaching...I went berserk screaming, jumping, and yelling for help! Fortunately, my principal came to the rescue, and the kids all clapped and cheered when our visitor, who turned out to be a female skink, was captured. Needless to say, all my planned teaching for the remainder of the day was sidetracked by this critter encounter. We did a little research and learned that skinks can lose their tails when frightened, and I am sooo glad that I did not have a loose tail flip-flopping around my room! I would have really lost it! The kids really enjoyed reading and writing about the skink, and even though it was unplanned, it turned out to be a great learning experience for all of us. And here I thought the highlight of the week would be our 3-D map that we made in Social Studies! Ha! Here are some photos of our 3-D map and the Circle within a Circle within a Circle Map we created to describe homes, neighborhoods, and communities. In other crazy and exciting news, I am very thrilled and a little overwhelmed by the fact that so many of you have found my Binder Covers useful! I had a request to add monthly binders for June and July, so those are now included if you'd like to redownload the file for Free from TPT. Also, if you have been to my store, you may have noticed some small changes. The organizing and spring cleaning bug has definitely bitten me, so I'm working on making over my products.
