Last Thrusday we had our Stake Primary leadership meeting. {I'm the second counselor in the Stake Primary} Our theme for the meeting was...." If I listen with my Heart" {a new primary song} We had a sister from the Mariposa...

Every month, there are 3 suggested songs to teach the Primary children. Discuss with your Primary President, and other chorister(s), which songs you’d like to focus on for each month. I try to pick one that THEY KNOW pretty well and one that they DON’T KNOW from the suggested songs. Teaching 3 new songs from scratch a month would be a lot for them to learn! So for the 3rd song, I will either sing it during a pick-and-choose Sunday, or as one of the opening songs that month. On the first Sunday of the month, I introduce the NEW SONG (the suggested song that they are unfamiliar with). To make Primary Singing Time interesting and fun and also bring the Spirit, I like to introduce the songs in different ways. I think introducing a song can be the most daunting of Sunday’s! I LOVE repeating songs, doing pick-and-choose activities, and incorporating holiday’s (if you follow our Instagram, it’s packed with those ideas!) But introducing a NEW song seems… I don’t know… boring? I don’t want to lose focus with their short attention spans by just telling them the words and then singing it over and over. So we’ve compiled some ideas as a resource on how to first introduce and help the children learn a BRAND NEW song. One they’ve NEVER heard before. ***With any and every new song, make sure you have the right attitude and prayer in your heart about the message the song will bring. Be enthusiastic, saying something like, “Today we are going to be learning a wonderful song”. You can also explain the words, message and story it conveys. Alright, you’ve waited long enough! Here are the ideas!!!!!! 1-Flipchart or Posters. I pretty much ALWAYS use a poster or flipchart for every song. I feel most children are visual learners and this helps Junior and Senior learn the words through pictures and words. Poster (my preference) Flipchart: (this flipchart is from Finch Family games found HERE) 2-Compound Learning. First, have them LISTEN to the song. This can be played on the piano, your phone through the Sacred Music app, CD, cassette, or Youtube video, etc. Second, let them HUM along to the melody. Third, have them SWAY their bodies (or sway scarves/wands) and hum to the music. Fourth, after showing and explaining the poster board/flipchart, SING the words to them (holding up the Poster or Flipchart). Fifth, have THEM SING along. Sixth, have them use shakers, paper plate drum, or clap/snap the rhythm as they sing along. 3-I sing, You Sing. After explaining the meaning of the song and showing the visual, play the music to the song all the way through. Sing the first line of the song with the piano, have the children repeat. Sing the second line of the song, have them repeat. Put the first and second line together and sing together. Continue on for the whole song. Make sure that before Primary you let your pianist know what you’re planning to do. You could also start with learning the chorus of the song. 4-Guess the Visual. Have the flipchart papers up on the board – all scrambled up and out of their correct order. Sing the first line of the song and have them guess which flipchart paper matches the first line. Continue this for each line of the song and put the flipchart in order. For Senior Primary, you could have word strips of each line of the song (out of order). Sing the first line and have them pick our which word strip is the correct one and have the children put the strips in order as you continue singing the rest of the song. For Senior Primary, you could have word strips of each line of the song (out of order). Sing the first line and have them pick our which word strip is the correct one and have the children put the strips in order as you continue singing the rest of the song. 5-Vanishing Flipchart Papers. For this one, call up as many children as papers you have in the flipchart. Each child holding one paper. Sing the song with children, one flipchart paper at a time. After the whole song has been sung, take away 1 paper and have that child stay standing. Sing the song and point to child as they sing that missing flipchart paper. Continue taking away papers and having them sing the song again until they’re all gone! Keep them up to the challenge using reverse psychology saying things like “Oh no! Can we do it now? (Yes!) Ok, here we go!” or “I don’t know, do you think you can remember this one????” 6-Bubblegum Blobs. For this idea, you’ll need a flipchart or poster hung up on the chalkboard. Sing the song with children (with idea number 2 or 3 on our list above). Tell the children you stepped on some sticky bubble gum on your way to church and thought the gum could help with singing time. Use one pink “gum blob” (pink paper or poster board cut into blob shape) to cover up a part of the song at a time. Sing after each blob is added. 7-Fill in the Blank. Write the words to the song on the chalkboard leaving out a word on each line. So intentionally NOT write some of the words to the song but draw a blank _______ so it can be added in. Sing the first line of the song. Have the children listen and see what the blank word is and fill it in. Continue on for each line of the song. This is a great one to get the children really listening! 8-Disappearing Words (eraser pass). Write the words to the song on the chalkboard. Have the children listen to the song as you point to the words. Next, sing the song with the piano. After, have the Primary sing along. Sing it one more time all together and tell the children to try to remember the words because they are going to start to disappear! As they sing the song, have them pass around the eraser. Whoever ends up with it at the end of the song, gets to erase 2-3 words!!! Sing again and pass the eraser! 9-Use Hand-Actions (or sign language). Sing the first line of the song. Ask the children to think of a hand action to be used for the meaning of the words. Sing the second line and again, ask them to think of a hand-action that would represent the words. Continue on for the whole song and combine all the hand-actions. This is another great idea for getting them to really listen to the words! (You could also sing the whole song together and only do sign language for KEY words). 10- Find It’s Home. Have the words to the song on the board - cut into separate word-strips and in the correct song order. Call up a child and give them a picture that matches up to one of the wordstrips. Have them match that picture to the word strip as you sing each line of the song. Have children sing along as they learn. 11-Picture to Lyric Match. (This one is the harder version of #10 "Find It's Home") Have pictures and song lyrics for each line of the song on the board (like a flipchart, but cut the words out separate from the picture so they’re not together). Sing the first line of the song and have the children try to match the picture to the words. Sing the song over and over until they’re all put in the correct place! 12-Listening Detective. Start by explaining we have a new song case. Listen up detectives!!! We need to find out: Who is it about? What do we learn? How many times does it read “He” or “Love”, etc.? You may want to read the scripture reference at the bottom of the song in the Songbook. 13-Visual Object Lesson. Show a quick visual lesson on what the song is about. Just a quick object lesson before you have them listen to the melody. In the Primary Music Instructions it say’s: For example, the song “Faith” (Children’s Songbook, 96–97) mentions a little seed. You could show the children a seed and talk about how we show faith when we plant a seed; this could lead to a discussion about ways we show faith in Jesus Christ, as described in the song. I also did this for “How Firm a Foundation” years ago. This helps them understand the meaning behind the song. Remember, it’s not just about learning the song and words, but learning and feeling the Spirit. AND now 2 last small tips: 14- Have the Pianist play the song as the interlude so that the children can hear the melody and be familiar with the tune. 15- Find the song in A Children’s Songbook Companion and read what’s suggested! This is a great resource for teaching the songs in the Primary Children’s Songbook. I refer to this book often. Find one HERE. It's seriously been a lifesaver on some Sunday's when I need an idea on how to introduce a specific song! and it also includes visuals on some songs! **Remember! This is the children's FIRST time hearing and learning this song! So don’t feel like a failure if they don’t pick it up right away! As you repeat and repeat this song, they will catch on! Also, remember the purpose is to help draw in the Spirit and let them feel the words and the meaning of the song. Good luck with your introducing your new song! I am currently serving as the secretary in our Stake Primary Presidency. I loved this recent Stake Activity Day event! Feel free to copy anything you'd like from the activity. We had a committee of around 20 people working on it and it was incredible. Everyone magnified their responsibilities and I have to say it turned out to be quite a memorable event for the girls. This was our poster (I took our stake name off to make it generic). Our invitation. We printed them as 4x6 pics at Costco. We based the theme around the Wizard of Oz but adjusted it to fit our desired goal. Our theme was "There's No Place Like Home with Our Father in Heaven and our Savior Jesus Christ." Our focus was trying to prepare the girls to attend the temple someday and then eventually return to live with Heavenly Father. Outside entrance area. They made poppies out of tissue paper and also had pictures of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow. When the girls entered the building, they were greeted with a yellow brick road and some giant lollypops. These lollypops were made of pool noodles and duct tape. Clever! I'm pretty sure we took a lot of these ideas from Pinterest and then just did our own variation. The sign told the girls to follow the yellow brick road to the cultural hall where everyone was meeting up. We borrowed this sign. Super cute! We had a sign-in table where each of the leaders grabbed a basket with all the information and booklets for their wards (one leader per ward). Hey, that's me at the table! Everyone met in the cultural hall and the theme was introduced. This was the Gospel Standard we focused on. Here's a close-up on the stage decorations. Someone in our stake strung lights across the room and then they hung these fun clouds on them (made out of batting). Photo area where they could take pictures of individuals or groups of girls. We had little props for them to hold up too if they wanted them. There were 5 stations for the girls to visit, each with their own theme and activity. Each station lasted for 20 minutes. We made booklets for the girls to take with them and use at the stations. It will put the various pages with the stations they went with. Station 1: If I Only Had a Brain Faith in God: Developing Talents #4 - Make an item from wood, metal, fabric, or other material, or draw, paint, or sculpt a piece of art. Display your finished work for others to see. Gospel Standard: I will live now to be worthy to go to the temple and do my part to have an eternal family. The girls each made these cute temples with a Gospel Standard on them. They had two tables for painting the wood and then two tables for making the paper tag to attach with ribbon. The girls used old t-shirts to stay clean while painting. We just took old t-shirts from around the house and then cut the back so the girls could put them on as a smock. The leaders dressed up as scarecrows and the sister missionaries were great helpers that afternoon. Station 2: If I Only Had a Heart Faith in God: Serving Others #3 - Make a list of the qualities you like in a person. Choose one quality to develop in yourself. Discuss how showing respect and kindness strengthens you, your family, and others. Gospel Standard: I will seek good friends and treat others kindly. Loved how these leaders dressed up as Tin Women. They even had silver faces! They gave an analogy about relating the Tin Man and his oil can to the Parable of the 10 Virgins. From the Faith in God booklet, the girls were challenged to "Make a list of the qualities you like in a person. Choose one quality to develop in yourself. Discuss how showing respect and kindness strengthens you, your family, and others." They wrote their quality on a paper "brick" and added it to the yellow brick road. After they made their brick, they played a game called "Fruit Salad" using the qualities they discussed. It was nice for them to get to be active and move around. Station 3: If I Only Had the Courage Faith in God: Learning and Living the Gospel #6 – Tell a story from the Book of Mormon that teaches about faith in Jesus Christ. Share your testimony of the Savior. Gospel Standard: I will choose the right. I know I can repent when I make a mistake. At this station, the girls were able to learn about Abish from the Book of Mormon. They wrote down how they would be brave like Abish. They also roll played various hypothetical situations and how they could be brave like Abish in those cases. Abish’s father taught her to believe in Jesus Christ. In her city, not many people believed in Jesus. After Ammon came to her people and taught King Lamoni, Abish knew that Heavenly Father wanted her to share the gospel with the people. She was finally able to tell everyone about Jesus. Our cute leaders dressed as courageous lions! They made these "lion" popcorn bags for the girls to take home with them. Basically they just copied lion faces to glue on the bags and then cut fringes on the top of the bag and folded it over to look like a mane. Station 4: T-shirts and Dresses and Skirts, Oh My! Faith in God: Developing Talents #9 - Learn about and practice good nutrition, good health, and good grooming, including modest dress. (We only did the modest dress portion. The rest of the requirement would be done at home.) Gospel Standard: I will dress modestly to show respect for Heavenly Father and myself. We took an idea from an article called “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” by Laurie Walker in the November 2009 New Era magazine and based our station off of that. HEAD: Put your hands on your head and make sure your shirt doesn’t pull up and show your skin. SHOULDERS: Put your hands on your shoulders to see if they are covered. Make sure you aren’t showing more under your armholes and that the buttons on your shirt aren’t straining. KNEES: Make sure your clothes go to your knees. TOES: Touch your toes. Make sure your shirt doesn’t droop down in front and that your shirt doesn’t slide up in back. Make sure your skirt and shorts are modest when you bend over. The focus wasn't to make girls feel guilty but rather to inspire them to be prepared for the temple. "Dorothy" showed them ways to take a questionable outfit and make it modest and gave them wonderful advice on preparing for the temple. The room was decorated with white clothing - blessing outfits, baptism dresses, wedding dresses, etc. She encouraged each girl to "see yourself in the temple." We had a giant mirror with a temple outline on it that each girl had the chance to look in and imagine herself going there someday. Station 5: I Have Been Changed for Good Faith in God: Learning and Living the Gospel #7 – Read Doctrine and Covenants 89. Discuss how Heavenly Father blesses us when we faithfully live the Word of Wisdom. Help plan and conduct an activity to teach the Word of Wisdom to others. (We only discussed how we are blessed by living the Word of Wisdom. The rest of the requirement would be done at home.) Gospel Standards: I will keep my mind and body sacred and pure, and I will not partake of things that are harmful to me. I will use the names of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ reverently. I will not swear or use crude words. I will only read and watch things that are pleasing to Heavenly Father. I will only listen to music that is pleasing to Heavenly Father. This station had a continuation from the "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" class. We had Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba to represent good and evil. They also decorated the backdrop to show the contrast. These ladies stayed in character and helped the girls learn how to make good choices. EYES: I watch movies and shows that are good and make my “spirit” happy. I will look for the good in others. EARS: I will listen to good music. I won’t listen to gossip. If I hear crude words, I can sing a Primary song in my head. MOUTH: I will not gossip. I will not swear. I will live the Word of Wisdom by eating good food and saying NO to things that are bad for my body. I will stand up for others. I will always tell the truth, even when it is hard. NOSE: I will not be “NOSEY.” I will be respectful of others. They served these delicious fruit pizzas at the beginning of class. They were a ton of work and we really appreciated all those that created them in the super hot kitchen. They were dressed like "Auntie Em." We included the recipe in the booklet in case the girls wanted to try making the fruit pizzas at home with their families later. COOKIE CRUST ¾ cup butter (softened) ¾ cup powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 egg 1 ½ cups flour Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, cream butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Add in egg, then add flour, and mix until thoroughly combined (do not overmix). Roll cookie dough about ¼ inch thick. Place on pizza pan or cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes until golden brown on edges. FILLING ½ of 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk 6 oz package cream cheese (softened) 2 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla In medium bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk, cream cheese, lemon juice, and vanilla. Mix well. When crust is cool, spread cream mixture on top of crust and top with fruits of your choice such as strawberries, pineapple, bananas, kiwi, etc. At the end of the activity, everyone met up again in the cultural hall and had a re-cap of the theme. They sang all four verses of "I Am a Child of God." This emphasized our theme of wanting to return home to be with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ again someday.

Tell your children that you are having your own Primary Singing time Olympics!!! Write these events on different pieces of paper and tape them onto the chalkboard. Call on a child to come up and choose an event! Here are the events for our review: High Jump, Shot Put, Volleyball, Javelin, Archery, Discus, High Dive, Pass the Torch and Olympic Ring Toss. High Jump - Put song titles on small squares of paper and stack them high on the wall (blue sticky tape). Have a child jump as high as they can and grab the song!!! Shot Put - Put numbers representing songs (or song titles) in the bottom of a muffin tin. Let a child stand from a line and see if they can toss a cotton ball (ahem... I mean, shot put) into one!!! Volley Ball - Choose a song that needs reviewing and while you sing, see if your children can keep the balloon in the air. Let them toss it around to each other (they MUST stay in their seat!). Javelin - Straw = javelin :) Put down some tape lines on the floor and write different ways to sing on them. Let the child who chose "Javelin" from the blackboard throw the straw (javelin). Which ever line is below the straw, is the way to sing. Choose a song that needs reviewing or a fun song! Discus - This is the same thing as the javelin but with a paper plate "discus"!!! Have fun! Archery - For this event you will need paper plates, string to hang them, tape, and rubber bands. The child will get 3 chances to shoot a rubber band and hit a paper plate target. On each target is an action to do while you sing. Here are some examples: Swimming - move arms like swimming forward Running - Run in place Rowing - row like your in a kayak Jumping - jump up and down Kicking - kick your foot like you are kicking a soccer ball Tae Kwan Do - move arms like karate moves (facial expressions are optional :)) High Diving - Let a child stand from a chair and try to drop a clothes pin into a bottle. Number each clothes pin and the one that goes in the bottle is the song to sing! Pass the Torch - Choose a song that needs reviewing and let the children pass the Olympic Torch around as you sing. Make sure every child gets a chance to touch it! You could have the pianist stop at random and the child holding the torch must say the next phrase to the song...then, continue on. This torch was made from a paper towel tube and tissue paper. ***(The Olympic Flame is lighted by the Olympic torch during the opening ceremonies. The flame is a symbol of peace. Thousands of relay runners from many countries carry it to the stadium of the city hosting the games. The flame is passed by hand from one runner to the next.) Olympic Ring Toss - Set out pop bottles and on each have a song to sing. Hand the child the colored rings and let them try to make a ring around one of them. The one they get is the song you sing!!! If you want to make your own, here is a picture of a simple ring toss to make. It's made from paper plates and paper towel tubes. For the rings, cut out the inside of the paper plate and color them with markers. And for the other part, cut a small hole in a paper plate and stick the paper towel tube in it. I needed an idea for after program singing time, but I wanted to give the kids a break from the same old songs/learning a new song. I saw the mustache on a plate idea somewhere(the song was hidden under the mustache) but I wanted to change things up a bit. Cue TRIVIA GAME!! I titled the game "I Mustache You A Question". I put together a bunch of questions about primary songs (I have the document of questions I used. I'll add them at the end). A few children at a time came forward (I did 3 for lack of time) and answered their question. If they got the answer correct they pulled a mustache off any plate and got to wear it while they helped lead the next song. It was a hit! It brought lots of laughter and smiles to the room, but they were quick to be reverent again because they all wanted a turn. (For making the Mustache Men) I cut lots of different looking mustaches out of felt. Laminated a piece of card stock(helped a ton for durability) and hot glued the mustaches to it. Cut the mustaches out and taped them on the plates that I had drawn silly faces on. (I stuck a few pieces of tape on the area of the plate I would be removing the mustache from over and over again so it wouldn't rip my plates.) After junior primary was over and put a new piece of tape on each mustache and stuck them back on the plates for sr. primary. The kids had a wonderful time playing and I was happily surprised how well they answered some of the questions. Hopefully this can help someone out. Let me know if you have any questions. If you've followed this blog for any amount of time you probably already know that. She is currently serving as an Activity Day Leader in her ward and of course rocking it. She just had the most adorable Manners Matter Feast and I'm so thrilled she's letting me share all the details. This doesn't just have to be for Activity Days either, my older sister is the Primary President in her ward and was going to do a few of these things with her Primary, it would also make a perfect and easy family night leading up to Thanksgiving! She started her Manners Matter Feast with a story to introduce the topic. We couldn't find one we liked and that fit the theme and purpose of the activity so I made one up! You can download the story at the bottom of THIS post. She blew up the turkey we were using and used colored paper for the different feathers, and added the feathers along with telling the story. The story is all about a turkey named Maggie that finds out how manners make life more colorful. She gets a new colored feather every time she masters a manner. To go along with the story I made a worksheet that they could hang in their room to remember what manners they should be working on. Here's one I made for an example. They could color the feathers the different colors they liked and add the specific manners they need to work on, on each feather. Hopefully reminding them that manners really do matter! My mom said this was a huge hit and the girls loved working on this page. My mom found the cutest, colorful feather suckers that fit perfectly in her little turkey stand. I made a tag to remind them of the story when they took home their little treat. You can find the free download for these cute little tags at the end of this post! Next came learning some table manners. She found the cute place mats and Manners Matter packet at Dating Divas! She also found the cute little turkey treat holders on Etsy from Jessicas Prints HERE! She filled these cute turkeys with a fun fall mix of marshmallows, candy corn, M&M's, Honey Nut Cheerios, pretzels, and Swedish Fish. She went over some Table Manners Do's and Don'ts to prep the girls for their feast ahead. She found this sheet from a church idea book that she has had for years. If you know where it came from please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due! My mom even made the cutest paper turkey full of popcorn! She told them she had been working in the kitchen and cooking it all morning! ;)  Then to setting the table! My mom already had it set as pictured above. She then taught the girls how to set the table-perfect for Thanksgiving Day prep! Then came eating! She had mini pudding cups, turkey slices, rolls, veggies, fruit, chocolate covered popcorn, and chocolate rice krispy treats with a white chocolate drizzle. We tried to stick with either brown or colorful foods to go along with the theme! We can't quit this super easy and addicting white chocolate popcorn! Our Stake Primary wanted to start the year off getting the children excited to learn about the Book of Mormon. The activity was a huge success! We kept the children moving and busy with short classes, crafts and fun activities at the end. We planned for 100 and had about 75 children attend. INVITATIONS & POSTERS: SETUP: I find it is always helpful to have a map and instructions for number of tables and chairs that are needed. That way, I can hand it to the helpers setting up and they know exactly what is needed. ACTIVITY SCHEDULE: 9:00 Divide into 5 groups with colored hand stamps 9:15 CHAPEL: Welcome, Prayer, Talk by Joseph Smith about finding the plates, Testimony from Stake Presidency Classes - 20 minutes each. We had brethren from the stake dress up as Book of Mormon characters (pictures coming soon) and tell their story in first-person point of view. Then adult helpers did a craft with the children. Story: Brother of Jared Craft: Jaredite Barges (2 bowls stapled together with a door and glowing rocks inside.) Story: Nephi Craft: Liahona (Decorated gold Christmas ornaments with stickers and jewels. There is a toy compass in the ring on the bottom.) Story: King Benjamin Craft: Tower (Built out of popsicle sticks and glued with glue gun) Story: Ammon Craft: Missionary Formula Card (Decorated cards with points from Alma 17-18) Story: Moroni Craft: Title of Liberty (Wood dowel with torn fabric.) We had a 10 minute break between Classes 2 and 3 where we served Rice Cereal Treats and let them get drinks and use the restroom. 11:30 CULTURAL HALL: Book of Mormon Games - 8 stations 1. "Amalickiah's Poison Darts" Blow darts into boxes with picture of Amalickiah 2. "Ruins of Ammonihah" - Blow a ping-pong ball through a wood maze. 3. "Samuel the Lamanite" - Knock Samuel off his wall (with paper arrows) 4. "Waters of Sebus" - toss arms (made of nylons and stuffing) to 2 partners who will try to catch them in a towel. 5. "Characters of the Book of Mormon" - matching game 6. “Nephi’s Bow” – String a bow and shoot an arrow at stuffed animals. 7. “Laban’s Sword” – Use sword to gather up cups (Lamanites). 8. “Tower of Babel” – Stack plastic cups as high as they can. After each class we gathered the crafts from each room and put them on tables in the Cultural Hall by colored group, so all the kids from that group only had to search one table for their crafts. These tables were setup by the doors so they would pick up their crafts as they left. We also provided plastic shopping bags for them to carry their crafts home. We also included this letter to Parents so they would know what their children learned and incorporate their visual aides in their family scripture study. Set up gym with flags from around the world. 2. As family members arrive at the church place a family name badge on one of the parent's backs. Our tags allowed us to print all of the family member's names on back. 3. Have each family create their own family flag out of construction paper and stickers. 4. Introduction. 5. Family Warm-Up Exercises to get the muscles ready to go. 6. Opening Ceremonies...Parade of Families - Bishop to carry torch to be placed in cauldron. 7. Separate by groups to go to each station (I'll list stations below). Scripture stories to be shared! 8. Gather back in the gym for family photos by the Temple. 9. Closing Ceremonies. 10. Each family walked away with a Family Home Evening Packet. Primary Family Scripture Olympics STATIONS: INSIDE STATIONS... 1. David and Goliath - The families used slingshots with foam balls to try to attack our HUMAN Goliath. 2. Noah's Ark - Families did races to try to get to the Promised Land. OUTSIDE STATIONS... 1. Stripling Warriors - The families buried the swords and did tug of war. 2. Hold to the Rod - Children were blindfolded and had to stay holding to the rod. At the end they were able to eat fruit snacks that were placed in the tree. We also set up a water station outside.

I was in charge of our Primary Singing time at church a few weeks ago and decided to play a simple game of tic-tac-toe to help us practice a song. It was so easy to put together, the kids had fun, and we got a good practice on one of my favorite songs! Supplies: Construction paper in Red and Blue Scissors Tape Chalk Prep Work: Draw an X on a piece of red construction paper. Cut it out and trace 5 more onto more red paper. Draw an O on a piece of blue construction paper and do the same thing. After they're all cut out, put them in a bag with some tape and chalk and you're all ready to go! Singing Time! I wanted to practice the song, "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" (Children's Songbook, pg. ). I think kids learn songs well when they sing them over and over. This game was a way to sing the song over and over and not get bored because we had a fun game going on at the same time! First, I drew a tic-tac-toe grid on the chalkboard, and taped up the X's on one side of it, and the O's on the other side. I split the kids into 2 groups: Team X and Team O. Here's how it worked with the younger kids (Jr. Primary, ages 3-8). The younger kids don't know this song very well, and the song is kind of long, so I chose to break it up into parts. I sang the first 1-2 lines of the song, and then had Team X repeat those lines. Then I did the same thing with Team O. So the kids got to hear and/or sing the same line 4 times. Repetition is key. :) After both teams heard and sang that line, then I chose 1 person from each team to come up and place an X and O on the board. Then we went onto the next line, and so on. It took about 4-6 turns before one of the teams had won. At the end we sang the song all the way through. We even had enough time to play another round! *Note: A few of the younger kids are a little bit more sensitive to winning and losing, so I made sure to have each team turn to the other and say "good job" to show how to be a good sport. :) Luckily for us, both teams each won a round so everyone was happy. Here's how it worked with the older kids (Sr. Primary, ages 8-11) The older kids know this song pretty well. They even know the second verse! So instead of the repetition, I played a fill in the blank game with each team. I went through the song in order and said a line to the song. Wherever I stopped the line, they had to tell me what the next word was. For example, "Whenever I hear the song of a _______," (the answer is BIRD) After each team got a chance to fill in a blank, I chose 1 person from each team to come put an X and O on the board. Then I did it all again. When the game ended, we sang the whole song all the way through. :) Again, we had enough time to play another round, and AGAIN, both teams each won one round.
