This is a simple review game that you can do for singing time!!! Here's a link for the game pieces from one of our favorite blogs! You can draw the grid on the chalkboard or draw one on poster board. The object of the game is to get 3 in a row AND to find out how well the children KNOW the program songs! This is how you play: Divide the children into two teams. (One is the X's and one team is the O's) Choose a team to go first and have one child pick a number. Each number will have a question about a program song. Ask the question and then if they get it right they get the square. If they don't know the answer they can ask their team :) After the question is answered sing that program song. Here are some sample questions for Junior Primary: 1 - What do I like to look for whenever there is rain? (Rainbows) 2 - As a Child of God what do I receive? (special light/ Holy Ghost) 3 - Is there someone on your team wearing a piece of jewelry with 3 letters that help us make right choices? And what are the 3 letters? (CTR ring/tie tac/bracelet/necklace. Choose the Right) 4 - Name Nephi's 2 older brothers. (Laman and Lemuel) 5 - Who built his house on a rock? (the wise man) 6 - What are the words our Prophet has for you? (Be True and Stand for the Right) 7 - Who am I trying to be like? (Jesus) 8 - If the Savior stood beside you, what would you say? (kind and true words) 9 - What are the Primary colors? (Red, Yellow, Blue) and here are some for Senior Primary: (because if your senior primary is anything like mine, they are SMARTY PANTS :)) You can give them hints if they need to know which Program Song it is from. 1 - How can you strengthen your family? (by my good works) 2 - What does the lord ask us to do with the commandments? (obey them) 3 - When in the right, what does your heart do? (confides) 4 - What happened to the house on the sand? (washed away) 5 - How many times do we sing Be True in Stand for the Right? (4) 6 - How does the Still Small voice speak to us? (whispers) 7 - Why do you want your life to be as clean as earth right after rain? (to live with God again) 8 - Though you cannot see the Savior, how often is He near? (always) 9 - What does yellow stand for in the song Our Primary Colors? (service) HEY YOU!!! Getting ready for your BIG DAY???? (the Primary Program?????) Looking For An Easy Music Game for your Class? You've come to the right place! I'm sharing an easy music game I like to do in the spring time with my preschool, kindergarten and 1st graders. Check out this easier version of the game "Little Bird" and be sure to share your thoughts in the comment section below. Easier Game Version: Little Bird Have the class sit in a straight line along the wall. Select two students to make a window by joining each others hands high above their heads so the other children can fly under their hands. The teacher will call out a color such as red birds. Anyone that is wearing red clothes will pretend to be a red bird and fly through the window as the class sings the song. Repeat the game by singing the song again and picking a different color bird to play the game. Continue the game calling out different color birds to go through the window. (Yellow, orange, green, black, blue, white, red, pink, brown, purple, grey birds) I like to make it more fun by calling for girl birds, boy birds and all birds. Most students will get several turns to go through the window since they will have more than one color on their clothes. Teacher Tips: 1. Let the children take turns forming the window throughout the game. 2. It's much easier to have the preschool or kindergarten classes fly around the room without using the two student window. They have just as much fun pretending to fly around like birds. You can find loads of fun music games and singing games Here! Enjoy this fun game with your classes! Sherry Stucki :)

One of the busiest times of the year is getting everything ready for the new year! I have been there and know all that goes into getting things ready. Below, are some printables and tips and ideas to make things just a little bit easier. Bulletin Board: Many Primaries choose to have a bulletin board display for the year. Below are some posters that can help out in creating that display. 2017 Primary Theme Poster 15.45 x 20 in Free Download HERE 2017 Primary Monthly Theme Poster 15.45 X 20 in Free Download HERE Themes Scripture Poster: Free Download: 2017 Primary Scripture Poster Part of Preparing for the New Year includes putting together binders for the Primary Teachers and Leaders. Below are some covers, as well as a list of other items that are often included in the binders: Door Signs: These are editable or you can print them out and write them by hand :) TIP: I would use a sheet protector and with masking tape or painters tape, tape it onto the door. Then place the door sign into it. It will protect and and can easily be switched out each year. So what does the Faith in God for Boys and the Faith in God for Girls have to do with the song “Choose the Right”? Did you know that it is one of the activity choices to select from in the “Learning and Living the Gospel” section on page 7 of the booklets? I did not know that!!! THANKS to Grandmajo for sharing that tidbit of info in a comment she left the other day. Oh man! I am sooooo going to run with this one in motivating the kids even more in learning the song! Here is the link at LDS.org for the girl’s booklet and here is the link for the boy’s if you want to check it out. I’ll confess, I have been a bit hesitant internally in teaching all three verses just because hymns can be a little more difficult to teach, but I have had this persistent feeling I should teach all the versus and so had planned on it. Now I have a better understanding as to why I had this feeling I should teach the children all three versus. A little AHA! moment for me. This Sunday I am going to take my little booklets and show the SR group and ask them the same question I asked above to see if they were even aware of that. I want to challenge the children to have this activity passed off this year by having the song learned, hopefully, by the end of the month along with being able to answer the questions about agency and choices. Won’t that be so AWESOME to be able to pass it off altogether?!?!?! I’m not sure if they need a signature to sign off on it or not, but I would think it would be great to initial it or something when they pass it off making it feel even more special and important. Maybe even have them come up as a class to sing it together to pass it off. I was also thinking of making a little song booklet or something to give them to take home to help them work on the song. I haven’t made personal booklets or anything like that before for them, but I thought this might warrant a little something extra this time. After pondering on the booklet idea, I decided instead that it needed to be something that they could post on their mirror or someplace easily visible so that they could view the song without much effort making it easier to sing and review it. So, I decided to make a one-page cheat sheet that has all the different pages of the flip chart on it. Something a little more fun than just the words, and besides, since I already had the flip chart made, it didn’t take that much more to make it work for a one-page cheat sheet. Here is the one-page cheat sheet I came up with if you are interested. (Click on the "Download original" in the upper right-hand corner for the best resolution.) I only have the chorus once at the bottom of the page so I will make sure to point that out to the kids so they don't get confused. To save on cost, you don’t have to print it in color. Just print out one and take it to church to make a copy for each of the SR kids in your Primary. 2/10/12 UPDATE: Chris and Janeil left a wonderful idea in her comment. You've just got to love the synergy generated out there from everyone! Anywhooooo, she suggested a smaller size to fit in the children’s scriptures. What a simple, yet brilliant idea and, you only need to print up half as many when you print 2-per sheet. I was a little nervous that it might be too small to see, but hey, if I can still read it, it should be easy enough for the kiddos. So, last night I made this 2-per sheet version in case your printer does not have the capability to print a 1-page version into 2-per page. (Click on the "Download original" for best resolution.) This 2-per page version has a lower resolution, but still is readable. Thanks for the idea. I just love it when you can accomplish two things at the same time; program song and an awards requirement. MARVELOUS!

I mentioned in this post a wheel that I created for teaching singing in Primary. I thought it would be fun to make it a freebie you can download! There are actually files for two different wheels. So you make one backboard, and then two different games to play. The first is the song wheel--this one has interchangeable pieces for different songs, so when the kids spin the wheel, it chooses the song for them. The other is for HOW you sing the song. This one is a bit more simple and isn't interchangeable. Items you need: The Backboard: One sheet of poster paper--any color. I backed mine on actual wood, which made it sturdier, but it's up to you. A brad--preferably a long one. The Song Wheel: One sheet of poster paper--any color. Draw a circle that is 16x16 inches. Cut out. Laminate if possible. Printed copies of provided song pieces, on cardstock. Cut out and laminate if possible. Ticky-tac How to Sing Wheel: One sheet of poster board - any color. Draw a circle that is 16x16 inches. Cut out. Printed copies of the "how to" files, on cardstock. Tape or glue Backboard How To: First, you will want to create your backboard. Get a regular sized poster board. Press a hole in the center with your brad, where you want you wheel to spin. Add some sort of arrow on one side that is the "stopping point" when you spin the wheel. I backed mine on real wood so that it would stand up in the chalk tray easier, but you don't have to--you can always pin it up instead. Song Wheel How To: I have created pieces for 66 songs. I even went in and made sure I had all the songs for the 2012 Primary program. You can always create your own, adding new songs, but tracing mine and decorating them yourself. Print them in color on cardstock. 22 pages. Draw a circle on poster board that is 16x16. Cut it out and laminate if you can. Cut out each of the pieces and laminate them if you can. Or you can print them on photo paper--that works great too. Prick your brad through the center of the 16x16 poster circle, then through the center of your backboard. Use ticky tack to attach your pieces to the board. That easy. You can change out songs as much as you like! How to Sing How to: Create a 16x16 circle out of poster board. Print the four pages of the How to Sing template in color on cardstock Cut off margins and glue the four pieces together to create one circle. Back it with the poster board you have prepared by gluing them togehter.Laminate if possible. Press your brad through the center and attach to your backboard. I hope these work great for you! My primary kids would get SO excited when they saw I had brought the Primary Wheel that day. It was a bit of work, but totally worth it. If you have someone covering for you, its an easy quick thing to give them to do. I don't have mine anymore--the new Primary chorister really wanted it, so I let her borrow it. Not sure if I'll ever see it again, but oh well. The kids are getting plenty of use out of it! TO DOWNLOAD: (May, 2019) The demand for these files has been so high that I decided to move all the files over to my Teachers Pay Teachers account--that way if there are updates, you will be notified! Don't worry--IT'S STILL FREE!!! I have also added a bunch of songs--including Christmas songs--and I have changed the formatting. Now you will have the files in PDF, but you will also have them as JPG files so you can pick and choose which songs you want to print. The download includes step by step instructions on how to do that. To get the download of all these files, click on the link below! In 2019 I added the new songs for the year, and made interchangeable pieces for how to sing. UPDATE: 2018 I have been called once again to be the Primary Chorister, and hope to be adding lots of new things I create! My newest game is called Primaryland, and it was an absolute HIT! Check it out!
I was in charge of our Primary Singing time at church a few weeks ago and decided to play a simple game of tic-tac-toe to help us practice a song. It was so easy to put together, the kids had fun, and we got a good practice on one of my favorite songs! Supplies: Construction paper in Red and Blue Scissors Tape Chalk Prep Work: Draw an X on a piece of red construction paper. Cut it out and trace 5 more onto more red paper. Draw an O on a piece of blue construction paper and do the same thing. After they're all cut out, put them in a bag with some tape and chalk and you're all ready to go! Singing Time! I wanted to practice the song, "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" (Children's Songbook, pg. ). I think kids learn songs well when they sing them over and over. This game was a way to sing the song over and over and not get bored because we had a fun game going on at the same time! First, I drew a tic-tac-toe grid on the chalkboard, and taped up the X's on one side of it, and the O's on the other side. I split the kids into 2 groups: Team X and Team O. Here's how it worked with the younger kids (Jr. Primary, ages 3-8). The younger kids don't know this song very well, and the song is kind of long, so I chose to break it up into parts. I sang the first 1-2 lines of the song, and then had Team X repeat those lines. Then I did the same thing with Team O. So the kids got to hear and/or sing the same line 4 times. Repetition is key. :) After both teams heard and sang that line, then I chose 1 person from each team to come up and place an X and O on the board. Then we went onto the next line, and so on. It took about 4-6 turns before one of the teams had won. At the end we sang the song all the way through. We even had enough time to play another round! *Note: A few of the younger kids are a little bit more sensitive to winning and losing, so I made sure to have each team turn to the other and say "good job" to show how to be a good sport. :) Luckily for us, both teams each won a round so everyone was happy. Here's how it worked with the older kids (Sr. Primary, ages 8-11) The older kids know this song pretty well. They even know the second verse! So instead of the repetition, I played a fill in the blank game with each team. I went through the song in order and said a line to the song. Wherever I stopped the line, they had to tell me what the next word was. For example, "Whenever I hear the song of a _______," (the answer is BIRD) After each team got a chance to fill in a blank, I chose 1 person from each team to come put an X and O on the board. Then I did it all again. When the game ended, we sang the whole song all the way through. :) Again, we had enough time to play another round, and AGAIN, both teams each won one round. One of my favorite songs that I taught the children last year was "Latter Day Prophets". Since it is conference time, it is always fun to sing about the prophets and help the children learn a little bit about each prophet. I taught them actions for each prophet and told the story that went with it. Here is what I did: Latter day prophets are number 1 (hold up one finger) Joseph Smith (hold your hands together like a book, representing translating the Book of Mormon.) Then Brigham Young (Fist your hands and put them together as if holding the reins of a horse, representing coming across the plains) John Taylor came third we know (point to your wrist where your watch would be, representing being saved by his watch when he was shot by the mob that martyred Joseph Smith) then hold up the number 3 with your fingers. With Wilford Woodruff (pretend as if blowing the bugle like the angel Moroni, representing President Woodruff dedicating the Salt Lake Temple) Lorenzo Snow (Trickle fingers down as if it were raining, representing his promise to the saints in Saint George that if they would pay their tithing the would receive the rain they needed for their crops) Joseph F. Smith remember the "F" (pretend like you are doing a hula dance, representing the time he spent serving in the Hawaiian Islands) Heber J. Grant (Pretend to swing a baseball bat, representing his love for playing baseball and teaching himself to play and helping his team win championships) and George Albert Smith (Pretend to be shaking hands with other people, representing his love for the people and wanting to shake all their hands) David O. Mckay (Make a big "O" with your hands above your head, representing the "O" standing for Oman) was followed by Joseph Fielding Smith (blow a kiss with your hand, representing his love for the people. I chose a kiss because when I was little I was able to sing for him in his office and he reminded me of a sweet loving grandpa who would kiss his grandchildren) Harold B. Lee (pretend like you are playing the piano, representing the fact that he was a great piano player) Spencer W. Kimball (pretend to be milking cows, representing the years he spent helping to milk cows when he was growing up) Ezra Taft Benson (Hold up the sign for the Boy Scouts with three finger salute, representing his years as a boy scout and love for the scouting program) Howard W. Hunter (pretend to hug yourself, representing the sweet, warm prophet that he was) Gordon B. Hinckley (pretend to be flying with your arms out like the wings of an airplane, representing the many countries that he visited and temples that he dedicated) Thomas S. Monson (draw a big heart with your hands over your chest, representing his love for the widows) These are the Latter Day Prophets!

I've been trying to figure out how to teach this great song. My SR knows it well so I will just be reviewing it but most of my JR don't know it at all. There are sooooo many cute ideas out there for teaching this song. I don't like to 're-invent the wheel' but I do like to put my own spin on it. Here are a few I have added to: The OCD Primary Chorister made a cute flip chart with pictures that she drew. You can link to it HERE. I decided to use this with my SR to review but I re-did it and just put one 'key word' with each picture. There are NO pictures for the chorus. Click HERE to download a copy. Camille over on her blog had a darling idea of teaching the first two verses of the song with puppets. You can check out her post HERE. There weren't puppets for the chorus and Camille does the 3rd verse a different way so I made some puppets for them. Susan Fitch has some really cute puppets on her Etsy Shop. You can check them out HERE. I used her puppets but on the church's website there are some there too. Here's how mine turn out. When the kids know the verse pretty well I'm going to pull out the 'STAGE'. I use a shower or curtain rod with a long curtain attached. I have 2 teachers hold the rod. The kids stand behind the curtain and hold the puppets up over the rod as we sing. Click HERE to download the puppets I added. Happy Singing!
2016 Sharing Time Outline Theme: "I Know the Scriptures Are True" November 2016 Sharing Time Topic: Reverence Is Love and Respect for God November 2016 Scripture: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). November 2016 Song: Your Choice November Week 1 Topic: Reverence is love and respect for God. Preparation: Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. The BEST thing is to always teach by the Spirit. Sharing Time Instruction: Before Sharing Time print out the Reverence cards and place each letter randomly on the board. To begin sharing time, explain that we need to unscramble the letters to form a word that means, Respect and Love of God. Invite some primary children to come up and help you unscramble the letters to form the word. When the word "Reverence" is formed, show the primary children the week's theme poster and invite the primary children to repeat, "Reverence is Love and Respect of God". Invite the primary children to sing the song, "Reverence is Love". Invite the primary children to listen carefully to what the song says about reverence. Ask the primary children to explain to you what reverence is. Explain that reverence is how we show our love and respect for our Heavenly Father and Jesus. Explain that in the next activity we are going to share examples of who we show that respect and love. Show the primary children the dice, explain that on the dice it gives different situations, where we could show reverence to Heavenly Father and Jesus. Invite a primary child to come up and toss the dice onto the floor. Whatever it lands on, they need to act out how they would show reverence in that situation. For younger children invite, an older child to come up and help them act it out. Discuss each situation as a group. (Situations: At Home, At Church, During the Sacrament, With Friends, During Prayer, At the temple) Close by sharing your testimony on how reverence for God allows the Spirit to be with us to teach us and help us feel closer to Heavenly Father. Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope that these ideas were helpful. Below are the other topics for the months as well as more ideas and resources. For the month of May, I am teaching the Sr. Primary 2 songs. I LOVE these two particular songs from the Children's Songbook. The first one is "The Priesthood Is Restored" on page 89, the second one is "A Young Man Prepared" on page 166. I wanted to make a medley with them and so using my new Finale PrintMusic 2011 program, I did just that! You may make copies of this music. I just ask that you not sell it to anyone, as I am offering it to you free of charge. Please use it for personal or teaching purposes only. Thanks:) The Sr. Primary love this piece! Well, except for one boy, but you can't please 'em all! It's a lot of fun to watch them all tap, bob heads or move their bodies to the beat. None of them were familiar with the songs at all. I had the pianist play through the piece while they just listened. As they listened, I asked them to make a picture in their mind, whatever the song made them think about. Some of the responses were: Army of Helaman, marching, superman or super hero's, & courage. I just explained that the power of all of their thoughts were wonderful and that the song is about a super power that is given by God: the priesthood. It worked for them. I made a poster for the medley as well. If you'd like a copy of the pictures, email me the request & I'll send them your way! I know many of you are teaching "Praise To the Man" for this month. I chose to only teach it to the Sr. Primary back in March to go with the Prophet Theme (Jr. Primary learned "Stand For the Right"). And to make things even easier on myself, I only taught them by teaching them HOW to read out of the hymn book. How's that for lazy? We are going to have the congregation join us in singing it as part of the program:) I just couldn't stand the thought of teaching it to the young kids. I'm impressed with all of you who are working so hard to teach your own primary children the song. It sounds like you're all doing a fantastic job! You all give me hope that I can do a better job myself the next time:)
As you start a new year, remind your Primary Teachers of these 9 things
