This awesome Liahona is from the 2005 Primary Partners Sharing Time written by Mary H. Ross, Illustrated by Jennette Guymon-King. It is copyrighted so we didn't scan it in to share- but we thought it was so cool that maybe you could make your own! So this how it works (Quoted from the book), "Help children imagine having the Liahona today. Tell them, "If each of our families could have a Liahona today to guide us, how would we keep it going to get the help we need?" Have children take turns drawing a card #1-10 and reading the action on the card. Then dial the Liahona to see if that action makes us worthy of inspiration. If the correlating number on the dial says "yes," that means we would be worthy to receive inspiration. If there is a "no," this means the Liahona would not work as well because our choice was not a righteous choice." So for singing time choose a child to pick a card. On the card have a story about choosing the right or a story about not choosing the right. The card number correlates with the number on the Liahona and the answer is on the opposite side (refer to pictures above). Here are some story examples for you: -Mary was very sleepy and tired. It was late so she hurried and jumped into bed. Is that choosing the right? -When Joyce was sitting with her family at Sacrament meeting, she decided-I will sit reverently and try hard to listen to the talks. Is that choosing the right? -Kenneth wanted to play with Bill's puppet. He decided to sneak the puppet while Bill was not home. Is that choosing the right? -Jenny had some earned money. She wanted to buy a special toy. She discovered that if she paid her tithing, she would not have enough money to buy it. She decided to pay her tithing first and wait until she earned more money. Did she choose the right? After each card is picked and checked by the Liahona, review Choose the Right!!!

Are you looking for a wonderful way to introduce all the different people you'll read and teach about this year as part of the 2024 Book of Mormon Come Follow Me year? You'll fall in
I've always been intrigued by the Gold Plates. From the story of Nephi getting Brass plates from the wicked king, Laban, to Moroni burying them, and ending with Joseph Smith being led to them and translating the words. Having said that, thinking of ideas for my cute Primary was fun this week as they are learning about the Book of Mormon and starting with it's introductory. So today we will be sharing ideas that might help inspire you with your Book of Mormon Singing Times :) 1-Write on the Gold Plates. Have you ever wanted to be like a prophet of old and WRITE ON the gold plates????? Right on! Me too!!! Today we get to! Before Primary, write down 5-6 songs on slips of paper and put them in a bag. Bring tin foil (spray painted gold), and have a small nail nearby. (You could also bring yellow pieces of posterboard/carstock/paper). Tape these one sheet at a time on the chalkboard. For Singing Time, have a child come up, pull a song title from the bag, and start to draw a depiction of the song on the "golden plates". Some examples of easy songs to draw: I Love to See the Temple, I'll Walk with You, Scripture Power, Once there was a Snowman, etc. Pictured in our example is Keep the Commandments. The other children in the Primary try to guess the song that is being drawn. The correct guesser gets to come lead the song (or draw the next one)! Then have the whole Primary sing that song :) 2-The Book of Mormon - Another testament of JESUS CHRIST. This Singing Time is to help the children understand that the purpose of the Book of Mormon is to bear testimony of Jesus Christ. Before Primary, randomly put 5-6 small pictures of Christ inserted into the pages of a Book of Mormon. Each having a song about Jesus Christ on the back. (Some examples of possible songs are: He Sent His Son, When Jesus Christ was Baptized, This is My Beloved Son, To Think about Jesus, When He Comes Again, If The Savior Stood Beside Me, I Lived in Heaven, He Died that we Might live Again). Explain that the Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ, as is the Bible. Also explain that the Book of Mormon is Christ centered, it's purpose to bring souls to Christ, and is about Christ. Call up a child to come flip through the pages of the Book of Mormon and find a picture of Jesus. Then sing the song that is written on the back. Show pictures of Christ as you sing. I believe there are 3,925 references to Christ in the Book of Mormon. There literally is not a more Christ-centered book in the world! 3-Build a Key-Stone as you Sing. Have some paper stones that build an arch on the primary table with a song title on the back (the ones pictured are cut out of a cereal box). Have a child come up, pick a stone and stick it on the chalkboard. Sing a song after each is placed. Leave the keystone as the last piece. In the Come Follow Me-for Primary manual it reads: Read to the children the following statement by Joseph Smith in the Introduction to the Book of Mormon: “The Book of Mormon [is] the keystone of our religion.” Explain that just as a keystone holds together the rest of an arch, our testimony of the Book of Mormon holds up and strengthens our testimony of other things, like Joseph Smith and the gospel. Pass out one of these handouts for them to take home and mark of with their family! (found HERE on lds.org) 4-Pages of the Gold Plates. The prophet, Joseph Smith, translated the words on the Gold Plates through the power of God. Let's turn our Primary Gold Plates and read the songs for Singing Time Today! Turn the pages of a play Gold Plates to reveal the next song to sing!!! These simple plates were made from wood, hangers, and gold paint! 5-Music Translation. Print out the hieroglyphic printouts HERE AND HERE from iheartprimarymusic. Display the "key" for all Primary children to see. Each symbol represents a number, so before Primary, choose what songs you'd like to sing and write down the page number from the Children's Songbook. At the beginning of Primary, explain that the Prophet, Joseph Smith, TRANSLATED the words on the plates into English through the power of God. It may be helpful to hold a representation of the plates as well as a Book of Mormon. During Singing Time, call up one child to be the "TRANSLATOR" (this child will be one who looks in the Children's Songbook for the song title translation). Put up the corresponding numbers to represent a song on the chalkboard. (For example, if you wanted to sing, I'm Trying to be Like Jesus, you would put up these representing the numbers seven and eight: Let the children shout out the page number, and then the "TRANSLATOR" finds the song title in the Songbook. Our Stake Primary wanted to start the year off getting the children excited to learn about the Book of Mormon. The activity was a huge success! We kept the children moving and busy with short classes, crafts and fun activities at the end. We planned for 100 and had about 75 children attend. INVITATIONS & POSTERS: SETUP: I find it is always helpful to have a map and instructions for number of tables and chairs that are needed. That way, I can hand it to the helpers setting up and they know exactly what is needed. ACTIVITY SCHEDULE: 9:00 Divide into 5 groups with colored hand stamps 9:15 CHAPEL: Welcome, Prayer, Talk by Joseph Smith about finding the plates, Testimony from Stake Presidency Classes - 20 minutes each. We had brethren from the stake dress up as Book of Mormon characters (pictures coming soon) and tell their story in first-person point of view. Then adult helpers did a craft with the children. Story: Brother of Jared Craft: Jaredite Barges (2 bowls stapled together with a door and glowing rocks inside.) Story: Nephi Craft: Liahona (Decorated gold Christmas ornaments with stickers and jewels. There is a toy compass in the ring on the bottom.) Story: King Benjamin Craft: Tower (Built out of popsicle sticks and glued with glue gun) Story: Ammon Craft: Missionary Formula Card (Decorated cards with points from Alma 17-18) Story: Moroni Craft: Title of Liberty (Wood dowel with torn fabric.) We had a 10 minute break between Classes 2 and 3 where we served Rice Cereal Treats and let them get drinks and use the restroom. 11:30 CULTURAL HALL: Book of Mormon Games - 8 stations 1. "Amalickiah's Poison Darts" Blow darts into boxes with picture of Amalickiah 2. "Ruins of Ammonihah" - Blow a ping-pong ball through a wood maze. 3. "Samuel the Lamanite" - Knock Samuel off his wall (with paper arrows) 4. "Waters of Sebus" - toss arms (made of nylons and stuffing) to 2 partners who will try to catch them in a towel. 5. "Characters of the Book of Mormon" - matching game 6. “Nephi’s Bow” – String a bow and shoot an arrow at stuffed animals. 7. “Laban’s Sword” – Use sword to gather up cups (Lamanites). 8. “Tower of Babel” – Stack plastic cups as high as they can. After each class we gathered the crafts from each room and put them on tables in the Cultural Hall by colored group, so all the kids from that group only had to search one table for their crafts. These tables were setup by the doors so they would pick up their crafts as they left. We also provided plastic shopping bags for them to carry their crafts home. We also included this letter to Parents so they would know what their children learned and incorporate their visual aides in their family scripture study. If I had to write down my TOP 5 favorite Primary songs (which would be extremely difficult because I have soooo many favorites), this song would be on there!!!! I remember singing this as a child and feeling so strong and proud, that I too, would be courageous like Nephi and Go and Do as the Lord commands!!! He truly does prepare a way for the things He asks us to do. I see it all the time in my life and recognize the way that things in my life seem to always work out as I do my best to serve Him. I am sooooo excited to introduce this song in Primary. And I feel the importance, more than ever, in teaching the meaning of this song and its words to help build the Primary children's faith and courage in the Lord. I hope with all my heart and in prayer that I can be an instrument in doing this. I've thought and pondered a lot on how to teach this song - even though I think the senior already know the tune and most the words - and this was the idea that I kept coming back to. So here's how I plan to sing this wonderful and fun song by Bill N. Hansen Jr. and Lisa T. Hansen. Nephi's Courage: To start, I will need 4 children to come to the front of the Primary room and hold up their mask. Have them each hold the corresponding visual ie, plates, gates, etc (printables HERE). Then, we will sing the first verse and chorus: The Lord commanded Nephi to go and get the plates From the wicked Laban inside the city gates. Laman and Lemuel were both afraid to try. Nephi was courageous. This was his reply: “I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands. I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey. I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands. I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.” We will sing the verse with Nephi getting the plates from Laban and Laman and Lemuel will hold a sign that says "Afraid" and look afraid. For the chorus, "Nephi" will hold up the blurb that looks like he is responding to the Lord's command. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Second verse: The Lord commanded Nephi to go and build a boat. Nephi’s older brothers believed it would not float. Laughing and mocking, they said he should not try. Nephi was courageous. This was his reply: We will need 3 different children to be: Nephi and Laman and Lemuel. They will hold the corresponding pictures and words HERE. Have Nephi hold up the picture of the boat. Laman and Lemuel hold the blurb that says, "It will not float". Then, they laugh and point. Nephi, looks courageous, and will hold up chorus blurb (Go and Do). See the link above for the visuals. It will probably help if you can point to the certain characters as their part is sung. You may want to pick older children to act as Laman and Lemuel so they know when to laugh and point. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For the third verse, The Lord gives us commandments and asks us to obey. Sometimes I am tempted to choose another way. When I’m discouraged, and think I cannot try, I will be courageous, and I will reply: Call up 4 children to each hold a paper of the song visuals - pages found HERE. (I printed mine in black and white and then colored with chalk.)
