My son thinks our nation's presidential legacy is fascinating. And since President's Day is this month, I cooked up a fun game to help us celebrate. If you've played Sequence for Kids, you'll recognize the rules. The game board and cards feature 19 of the most "famous" presidents in U.S. history. Each card features: A star with a number; that number indicates where in the lineage of presidents he served (i.e. Richard Nixon's card says 37, because he was our nation's 37th president). The president's political party affiliation. A quick fact about their life and/or their presidency. Here's What You Need The game board (download a 4-page PDF here, print, and tape together) Game cards (download a 6-page PDF here, print on cardstock, and cut apart) Game pieces that are a different color for each player (we use poker chips) The Objective The first player to get four of their own game pieces on the game board in a row (horizontally or vertically) wins. How to Play Each player is dealt three cards and looks at their hand. The remaining card deck is the draw pile. Players can place a game piece on any president they have a card for in their hand. One game piece is placed on the board per turn. The card played is placed in a discard pile and the player draws a new card. Players should always have three cards in their hand. Special Cards There are two kinds of special cards in the deck: one where the player can place a game piece on ANY open space and another where the player can remove an opponent's game piece from anywhere. The player discards the special card, and in the case of the "remove an opponent's game piece," they cannot place their own game piece in its place until their next turn. Star Spaces The four corners of the game board are free spaces. A player can use one of these spaces as one of their four-in-a-row. These are the only four spaces on the board that more than one player can place a game piece on. Personal note: I tried my best to make sure there were no errors (it was a lot of facts to keep straight). If you spot one, please let me know! Looking for a fun book to pair with this activity? I've got a great one. We LOVE Judith St. George's book So You Want to Be President?. It's such a clever way to learn about the country's past presidents. My son took this to school when it was his week to share his favorite book with the class. CREDIT: This activity would not have been possible without the amazing free clipart of the presidents, available at WPClipart.

A great way to get your students to buy into their learning is to let them choose their topic to learn about. As a closing to our symbols unit the students were able to pick one symbol that they wanted to research and become masters of it. They were able to create this quick craft to put their work on. Total time for rubbing is a maximum of fifteen minutes. First cut out stars for each student to have. You can use die cuts, volunteers or the students. If you are putting something on top of the finished paper you do not have to have stars for the middle. Make sure to make smaller starts for the outside so that they show past the student's work. Consider giving students a piece of paper the same size as the one they will be rubbing so they know where to lay the stars. For students who have fine motor skill difficulties you can put double sided tape down on the paper, under the stars. Next give the students a plain piece of paper. Go over different designs that they might try before hand. If students have never done a rubbing teach them how to fill in the entire paper. The patriotic rubbing is great enough to leave on it's own, but here you can see a symbol and writing that we glued to the paper. I plan on having students make Veteran's Day posters for our Veteran's Day signs with this rubbing too.

This is an excellent collaborative art project for Presidents' Day! We created Abe Lincoln {Newspaper Abe tutorial here} a few years back, and then added to our collection George Washington & Thomas Jefferson recently. We had about 80+ kids contributing to make each of them. This was an amazing art project to participate in with the students. They were able to reflect on history and words that represent our country. We entered the presidents in a contest and won a prize! We are representing our 2nd Grade @ Madison Country Patriot Contest. SMILE!!!! GOOFY ALL OVER THE PAGE! Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence Tutorial for Jefferson on Paper: Materials: overhead projector president image on transparency paper numerous copies of The Declaration of Independence clear tape canvas stretched or wood board (for the image to adhere and hang on wall) black permanent marker crayons heavy books plastic cling wrap large brush Mod Podge Polyacrylic 1- Please refer to the tutorial of Newspaper Abe Here to get an idea of how the images are copied onto the paper and the adhering process. 2- I used this Declaration of Independence and this image of Thomas Jefferson. 3- I lightly taped the paper together on the back side so the tape would not show on the final image.(Notice I did print on different shades of paper, hence the lighter area of the face) 4- I turned over Thomas Jefferson and randomly cut into strips and then into rectangle shapes. I cut around 90 shapes so each student and teacher would be able to color their own. 5- Just like in creating Abe, I numbered the backside of each paper in order (1-90) so I could easily arrange Thomas back together. 6- Students created designs and colored with crayons on their shape of paper. 7- I sparingly taped the backside of shapes into strips, taping the numbers in order. 8- Flipped it over and used Mod Podge to adhere the strips (easier in strips than the whole image) onto the wood board until image was complete! 9- I use polyacrylic, which is a non-yellowing clear layer and is stronger than Mod Podge, for a top coat on the image. Hello everyone! I am back to write about my recently uploaded February STEAM Activities resource. The STEAM Activities have been a HUGE hit in my classroom, so I cannot wait to continue them for the rest of the year!! The Febraury STEAM Activities set also comes with five activities. I again tried to incorporate every letter of STEAM's acronym (science, technology, engineering, art and math) throughout the month's activities. Click here to find the link to the product. The first activity in my February STEAM pack is Groundhog's Galore In this activity, students will use a 12x18 piece of paper (pre-cut), a groundhog template picture, tape and a flashlight to build the Groundhog. They will build the burrow and be able to create the Groundhog coming in and out of his den. Once everyone in the class has built their creations, the teacher may turn off the lights and students can practice and learn more about shadows. Included in this is two informational sheets to build on student knowledge: There is a graphic organizer included to help students plan and improve their creations! The next activity in my February STEAM pack is Love Bugs Students will build love bugs out of three pipe cleaners, red and white beads, and Googly eyes. If teachers are interested in saving their beads and pipe cleaners, they can use smaller pipe cleaners and less beads. Students can decide if they want to keep the love bug for themselves or give it to someone they love. If they choose to give it to someone else, they can include the following gift tag. The third activity in my February STEAM Pack is White House Construction. To celebrate President's Day, students will build the white house using paper, a cereal box, templates of the US flag and tape! They will have to make sure that their white house can stand tall and hold the president! Included to build student knowledge is an informational page about President's Day and a graphic organizer to help plan for their work. Next in the February STEAM Activities is Tooth Fairy Flight During this activity, students will learn how to build a paper airplane! To celebrate Dental Awareness Month, they will follow the given directions page to build their airplane and attach the tooth fairy. Once the airplanes are created students can measure the distances their airplanes go using rulers or any non-standard forms of measurement that you choose! Included is a "Tell Me About Teeth" informational page to learn about the importance of cleaning your teeth! The final activity in the Finally STEAM Activities is the Google Classroom and Lego lesson. Students will start on Google classroom. They will move the colored Lego pieces from the left side of the screen to the puzzle on the right side of the screen. This will help them build Valentine's Day images: a heart, a Hershey's Kiss, a rose and a mailbox! While the students are completing the Google Classroom lesson, they can color the graphic organizer to then visualize what each winter item should look like. Finally, they can use the graphic organizer to build with real Legos! The Google and graphic organizer are a great way for students to plan what to build! Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope these February STEAM Activities make Science class extra fun for you and your students! Enjoy! February STEAM Activities
