This summer, I was challenged with the task of coming up with a fun sewing project for kids. I called them Stuffed Pizzas Plushies and I was so excited to do it with my students. But when it came time to do it...I got this wild hair that these pizza slices should be big. So big that they could act as pillows...hence our HUGE Pizza Pillows! If there has ever been a project that my students have been BONKERS over, this.is.it. They have loved learning to sew, coming up with toppings and, of course, using puffy paint. Some even wanted to create faces on their pizzas which I was all for. Here's the video I created this summer. I shared it with my students but just reminded them that their pizzas would be about triple in size. This project took us three one hour art classes to complete. Here's the break down: Day One: The kids got their pizza crust fabric and their tissue paper pattern. I created the pattens by simply making a triangle with a curved top for the crust. You can see an example of that in the video. They had to fold their fabric (which was cut into large rectangles), pin the pattern to the fabric an cut it out. From there, they had to remove the pins, remove the pattern and then re-pin the top and bottom crust of the pizza together. Then they learned how to thread a needle and stitch one side for their pizza closed. It was an action packed day. Day Two: We learned how to stuff our pizza, pin it closed and then stitch across the top. Some kids didn't want their stitching to show, so they flipped their pizzas inside out. We also began cutting out the toppings for our pizzas. We kept these in an envelope until next time. Day Three: Using good ole Aleene's Tacky Glue, we stared gluing down our toppings. We did use a pattern for the sauce (the same pattern for the pizza, just smaller) and added toppings to that. The kids loved this...but having good fabric scissors is key. Nothing is more frustrating for the kids than having scissors that won't cut felt. These are special scissors we only use when working with fabric. Those who finished and wanted to add puffy paint were allowed to go to Puffy Paint Town. Now let's talk supplies for a hot minute: * Felt for the Crust: I know what you are thinking: that must have cost a fortune! Actually, it was cheaper to purchase a bolt of light brown felt than it was to buy the individual sheets. I bought the bolt at Joann's and it was on sale for $2.99 a yard. With my teacher discount the total was just under $20! I already had a ton of felt so that was really the only cost. * Chenille Needles: These are the best for teaching kids to sew as they have a large eye and are sharp on the ends. * Pins and a Magnetic Wand: Magnetic wands are my jam, y'all. You can find them at the craft stores and they are the best at keeping up with pins. I also love the pins for quilting, with the ball on the end. You can keep up with them so much easier. * The Thinnest of Crochet Thread: I HATE embroidery floss for stitching as it's got all those extra strands. Crochet thread is the way to go because it's strong and is only one strand (or is it two strands, twisted?). I only buy white to save some cash. All of my students were highly engaged. So much so that I have several who have now been making plushies at home and bringing them in to share! It's been such a joy to teach my most favorite thing: sewing! Hey, friends! I'm coming to you today with my very favorite fiber arts projects! Teaching fiber arts is one of my very favorite things to teach, along with clay. This summer and fall, I put in HOURS creating THIS BOOK which will be due out this coming summer: You can preorder yourself a copy here if you are interested! But if you just can't wait, I thought I'd share some of my very favorite fibers projects right here today. Be sure and follow the links to the lessons as nearly all of them have how-to videos that are perfect for you and your students. Let's start with sewing! 1. These GIANT pizza pillows were such a hit last year with my students that I knew I had to do it again. Because I was wrapping my fibers book this past fall, I decided to kick off the school year with fibers. Usually, I'm all about fiber projects in the spring. This is how we displayed the pillows at last year's art show! This year, we also made both emoji and donut pillows (size: HUGE) but for details on those, you'll have to scoop up my book. 2. If you are looking for a beginner sewing project on a smaller scale, you might wanna try these stitched monsters on for size. My kids used Smart Fab fabric for the bodies but felt would work just fine. If you are curious what types of needles and thread I recommend, be sure and check out this blog post as well as the others where I break it down for you. 3. I learned embroidery from my grandma when I was in elementary school and I LOVED it. It felt so good to learn something so "adult" in my mind: creating a picture with needle and thread. I love sharing this experience with my students now too. You can read all about this Our School Has Heart fiber art's experience right here. This year, I decided to live dangerously and introduce embroidery to my second graders at the start of the school year...when they are still first graders, really. It was a bumpy start but they got it and loved it. This lesson can be found in my book but I did create this video a while back to help you troubleshoot stitching with kids: Actually, the above video was created for AOE during one of their online conferences! This is a couple years old but does walk you thru a lot of important details of all things fiber arts and kids. And here is my troubleshooting embroidery with kiddos video. I hope you find them helpful! 4. For even MORE details on sewing and embroidery, along with a book I strongly recommend, visit here! 5. Needle felting with kiddos is not something I do very often...but I do enjoy doing it! If you attempt needle felting with children, I'd make certain it's with a group of kids that understand the dangers of the needle felting tool and are responsible enough to handle it. As y'all know, I LOVE needle felting and have put in countless hours stabbing stuff. If you are interested in learning more about needle felting, start here. 6. One of the most popular lessons on this blog has been my string art lesson. This is based on a project I did in 5th grade and LOVED. My students have loved it just as much. I've created videos to walk you and your kids through this lesson so be sure and check out this blog post AND this blog post! 7. Paper weaving is a must when you introduce weaving to your students. But what to do with the paper weaving when finished? Last year, we made these woven owls and the kids loved them! Both this blog post and the one mentioned above have A TON of videos on teaching first graders (and up!) how to make a paper loom and weave. 8. Circle Loom Weaving has always been a huge hit! I normally do with my second graders in the spring but this year, I did it with third grade in the fall. I can't tell you how many videos I have on this! Be sure and check this blog post out if you have any questions about getting started. 9. Have you ever tried CD or Embroidery Hoop weaving? So fun and easy! Last year, my second graders tackled CD weaving instead of plate weaving. It was a great way to upcycle those stacks of CD's I'd been accumulating. This type of weaving takes less time than plate weaving as you don't have to spend two art classes painting the plates. They also look super pretty in the window when light hits the CD. Video and lesson details here! 10. Whenever I get stumped for a lesson, I just think back to the things I enjoyed creating as a kid. I remember the summer I spent at a vacation bible school learning straw weaving. So fun! My kids love this one too. Details and video here! 11. Want a lesson that packs a huge punch? Tree weaving teaches landscape painting, weaving and so much more! This lesson of mine has been another huge hit on my blog. I have many videos to walk you and your kids through this fun technique. You can find it here. 12. I have yet to meet a kid who didn't love making Ojos de Dios. Why not try expanding on that love by making BIG God's eyes?! We did that here! 13. Pouch Weaving used to be one of my all time favorite things to teach. Because it is complex, I created an entire series of weaving videos for you and your students, including how to create that cool cord. You can find the beginning of the series here. 14. Got yarn? Then you and your kiddos can yarn bomb! What a great activity for your early finishers too. 15. Shibori! I love shibori dying and so do my students. I created a video that explains EVERY one of these folding techniques and you can see it here. So, truth be told: I've been blogging for seven years and teaching for twenty. Spring is a time of renewal, growth, and new beginnings - and what better way to celebrate the season than with some fun and creative paper crafts! With our
IKEA in collaboration with creative agency Instinct has published a guide on building pillow forts with household basics and IKEA products.
Isn't this gorgeous? The piece above is an example of a process I call 'toothpaste batik', and was created by a 5th grader in my DragonWing Arts after-school art program. She started with a resist made of a 50/50 mix of toothpaste and aloe vera lotion. I have previously blogged about this fun process here and here and here and here. Check each of them out to see images inspired by Matisse, by Victorian architecture, and by dragons and castles and fantasy! I was first inspired to try this by a blog post I read, but the link is unfortunately dead so I cannot share it with you. Anyhow - when the resist (above) was dry, the whole thing was painted with tempera, (but definitely NOT the washable sort). She realized that she didn't have to stay in her lines, so she had a lot of fun mixing and playing with color, and painting right across the spirals and swirls she had drawn. Here it is after being painted: When the paint was dry, the piece was washed out to remove excess paint and resist, leaving behind the lovely white lines. And voila! Below is the end result. If she wants to add extra detail now, some colored Sharpies will work great. She can frame it with construction paper, or leave it alone; it's up to her. Great job! She was absent this week, so she hasn't seen how it turned out yet, but I'm sure she'll love it! Below is another student piece, a dragon cave, made by a third grade student. The first photo is of it after it was painted, and the second photo is the completed piece. The third photo is, of course, the proud artist. I had intended for the girls to mount the pieces on construction pieces, but they didn't want to. This student told me that this was "the best art project I have ever done, EVER." She was beyond proud of the result, and I am so happy for he! Her choices were truly her own; totally different than what I expected her to create, and I'm glad that I didn't try to force my ideas/opinions on her. I don't think she would have been as proud. Lets walk through the entire process, step-by-step. We begin with a drawing in pencil, traced over with a black Sharpie marker. The drawing is then taped to a board. The example in the photos below were made by another third grade student. A piece of fabric is stretched to get out wrinkles and taped directly over the drawing. Then, we will need to prepare our 'not glue': a mix of toothpaste and aloe vera lotion that I purchased at the dollar store. (I'm sure they wonder why I sometimes buy SO many tubes of toothpaste. They must think I have a strange obsession.) I purchased these small glue bottles to hold the mixture, and I clearly label them 'not glue'. (Once, a couple of years back, a student thought they were bottles of glue and could not understand why a cardboard structural project he was making would not hold together! We had a good laugh when we discovered he was attempting to glue it together with toothpaste and handcream!) So I squeeze the two products into the small empty squeeze bottles, which then have to be shaken like crazy to mix them together adequately. I do not measure, but I try to be equal in the size of my squeezes. To mix them together well, my enthusiastic students do what we call 'the shake-shake dance'. (Make sure your finger is on top of the cap when shaking! We do not want toothpaste squirting around the room!) Now the student is ready to trace over her drawing on to the fabric, periodically putting her finger over the top and re-shaking the bottle to keep it well-mixed. She keeps the bottle tip close to the fabric to aid in her control. I warn the students to be wary of drawings with too many tiny details; sometimes you might get a blob! Little drips and mistakes are incorporated into the design and add charm. Remember, this is a resist; anywhere it is placed on the fabric will remain white (or the color of the fabric; I used this process on a piece of pink fabric for a project that I blogged about here.) The big bonus is that, while your students are working with the resist, your classroom will smell wonderful from the aloe and toothpaste mix - minty fresh! How often can you say that in an art room?!?! She lets the resist dry overnight; it might still feel sticky or rubbery afterward; that's OK. The resist is dry, and now she is ready to paint. It is OK to paint right over the resist lines. A word about the paint brand - I have tried various brands, with varied levels of success. This paint worked great! We used Blick Premium Tempera. We want richly pigmented paint that will stain the fabric and not wash out in a rinse in the sink. Washable tempera is no good to use. I previously have done fairly well with Crayola Premium Tempera and with Sax Versatemp, but honestly, the Blick has proven to be the best at color retention (which I suppose is a good reason to make sure your students wear an art shirt, since the paint will stain your clothing!) The young lady who did the piece in these photos insisted on just painting the bottom very lightly. I was concerned that it would not turn out well, but she insisted on trying so I let her. I, of course, was wrong to have worried! To wash the piece, we first remove the tape to remove the fabric. (By the way, in a larger class of students I would have the students write their names in fine Sharpie on the edge of their artwork, covered by tape, and then once again on top of the tape!) Take the piece to the sink, let warmish water run over it, and rub lightly with fingers. Excess paint will come off, and after a brief time, the toothpaste mix will start to come off easily. Rinse it off well, and lay it back on the cardboard board to dry. We put a couple of clean pieces of newsprint under the wet artwork to absorb some of the excess water. In my former classroom, I had three sinks, and I had the kids work together in teams to rinse their projects. Unfortunately, I do not currently have a sink in my classroom, and I only have three students once a week, so I washed their projects for them. You can see in the photo below that her lightly painted ground area has come out just as she desired! You can see, she is very happy with her result! Here below is the sample I worked on with the kids, when I demonstrated the steps/process. First, here is the fully painted and unwashed piece. I like lots of color, and I used a lot of paint. And, after washing, here's how it turned out. I think the Blick paint colors worked out fabulously! Note - because my previous experience with this process had poor results with pastel colors (paint colors with added white), I was hesitant to use white at all for this project. I did, however, end up adding a little white to one of the blues because it was SO dark, and the result is fine, so I think next time around I may try with some much more white added, to get some lovely pinks, lavenders, and turquoises. It's worth a try, I think! One last thing... I have seen many blog posts and pins on Pinterest doing this same sort of process, using a resist of Elmer's washable School Glue or Blue Gel Glue. I tried it once when we ran low on toothpaste, and even though the process worked, it was very challenging to wash out the resist and I wouldn't use it again. I also saw that someone used hair gel; certainly worth trying, I suppose. The point of the toothpaste/ hand cream mix is, I assume, to get the liquid flow of the lotion, and the drying ability of the toothpaste. Have fun!!!

I absolutely LOVE IKEA and even though the closest one to me is about 3 hours away, I always make a point to go a couple of times a year. A few years ago, I did a post on items from IKEA that teachers can use in their classrooms. You can check out that post HERE (most of those things are still available!). Below are some of my finds from my most recent trip... There are tons of alternative seating options at IKEA. Most of the office type chairs are sold in two parts... the seat and then the base. The seat part is a great floor seat.. similar to the rocker chairs people are using. Here are just a couple of the options that I thought looked the most comfortable and affordable... If you need some basic stools for your students to sit on while they work... IKEA has some awesome cheap rugs. The rugs I bought for less than $5 over 5 years ago are still holding up and look great (even after 180 days of use a year by primary students). I use rugs for silent reading but also for my low table where students sit on the ground. These are a few of the rug options... I grabbed up two of these larger circle rugs... my kiddos will love them! Two students can fit on them for partner reading. I loved this green dot rug.. look at the price! You can't really tell the size but this would be a great rug in a small area where 3 or 4 kiddos could sit and play a game together. This would be a great addition to any classroom. IKEA has tons of deals like this! They also have a TON of chair pads.. the ones with the strings that you tie to the back of the chair. these would also be great for your floor kiddos. I picked up these round versions that go on stools... they have rubbery grippers on the back that will prevent them from sliding on hard floors. If you are looking for "spots" to keep your students in one place while sitting on the rug these could be an option... they are actually placemats! They have a rubbery backing so they won't slip on laminate flooring and are just the right size for primary kiddos. This is a longer cushion pad... two kiddos would fit perfect on this for partner read! I wish I had about 12 of these! If you want to go kind of big and you are looking for a couch, this is so cute. I almost grabbed this up but couldn't decide on a color... It comes in yellow or a dark gray. These stools are so cute... they would be great at a tall table. The don't wobble and are sturdy. They have a ton of other stool options. I love stools because they can be stacked or pushed under tables so easily! Here are some lower stool options. They will work on regular height tables. If you are brave enough for pillows (I always tell my kids no heads on the pillows....if you get my drift) they have a ton of cheap options. This dish rack would be perfect for organizing tablets! Just slide the tablets into the slots and place any iPods into the silverware holder portion. I purchased this shelving unit (in white) to transform my fluency station... These picture frames are perfect for displaying learning objectives at small groups.... If you can screw into walls and cabinets these would be perfect for so many purposes... displaying student work, displaying pics from the year or I think they would be great for hanging headphones. Just slip the headphone over the wire and you are good to go! This is my dream item at IKEA...I would love to have two of these to hold my differentiated tubs for literacy and math rotations. It holds 12 drawers (3 drawers for each group) that can hold different leveled materials. If you want to whimsically figure up your data this calculator is super cute...I would love for my principal to come in while I am punching in numbers on this ridiculous thing... I have never seen this section in IKEA before (maybe it's new or I am just blind) but they have cute party favor type decor. I often use the tissue balls in my classroom. I love these options! This section also had these number paperclips and quotation paper clips. These would be a fun little teacher gift! I also grabbed up this cheap tub to store rugs and pillows. Finally what my kiddos will be most excited about BEADS (for fun friday). These are super cheap! IKEA also has these rolls of paper (should have grabbed a dozen for my artsy kiddos!) for super cheap!
