"I love this unit. It is one of the most complete - doable - layouts I have seen. I especially like that each section is not necessarily dependent upon the other, but also that they connect. Thank you." - Rebecca The unit is split into three separate parts: Part 1 – Exploring Living and Non-Living (pages 10-35) Your little learners will explore what makes something living with several fun, hands-on activities and their matching printables. Picture sorts with real photographs, magazine searches and comparing and contrasting earthworms and gummy worms are just some of the fun activities you’ll find in Part 1. You’ll also find a beautiful printable display for your investigation area – Living things eat, breathe, grow, reproduce and move. Part 2 – Exploring Animals and their needs (pages 36-59) By introducing a class pet, your little learners will be able to observe and explore the needs of animals. You will find a range of printable signs and resources to display in your investigation area such as a display outlining class pet expectations and an observation journal. Your little learners will also create habitats suitable for a range of different animals ensuring that all of their needs are met. This particular activity also provides your little learners with an opportunity to engage in sensory play – my favourite way to learn! Part 3 – Exploring Plants and their needs (pages 60-109) Through a series of hands-on experiments and activities, your little learners will explore what plants need to stay alive. Your little learners will grow cress heads, test whether or not plants need sunlight and water; and explore how plants use their stems and leaves to store water. By growing seeds in ziplock bags, your little learners will observe the life cycle of a plant. Every activity has matching printables so that you can easily assess student knowledge and understanding. You will also find a beautiful book full of photgraphs of plants that grow in different locations such as the ocean, ponds, gardens and even inside your house! After completing this unit, you will have addressed the Foundation Year Biological Sciences strand of the Australian Curriculum! While I design my resources with Australian students in mind, I also include alternative US spelling too. Please be sure to check out the preview images to see what’s included. Let me pause here to say - SEEDS ARE AMAZING! I forgot to buy bean seeds and remembered that I had pinto beans in my sensory bins! So I just grabbed some from the bins!!! And they grew!!! AMAZING! And did you know that you can use dry bean soup mix from the store to sprout? Here are the seeds on Day 1. And on Day 11. I love planting in plastic bags, because we are able to see all the plant parts! You can grab the Greenhouse pattern and directions below! We used classroom items to practice and create patterns. Check out these AB patterns! We began discussing the letter Aa. Hello Everyone!! 2014 is almost here! We are staying home, safe and sound in our living room this year! I am so happy!! We had a houseful of love and laughter this past week with both boys and friends here, and frankly, I am pooped!! It feels good to not have to cook, clean, dress up, and be "on" for a few hours!! But at the same time, I miss them already!!! I do, finally, have a minute to show a couple of pics from the week before winter break. One of my favorite days was our Grinch Day. We love celebrating the special message that Dr. Seuss illustrates in this infamous story! Here are a couple of pics! The kids went all out with grinchy green spirit! The grinch sent some sweet little elves to check on our kindness and make sure we learned from the story! Jolly, Joy, and Jingle made their debut and will probably hang around throughout the new year!! A yummy green snack was mysteriously left for the kids!! This amazing team really gets into every celebration!! I also wanted to share with you something our room moms made for our classrooms!!! The kids brought gift cards to clip onto this amazing snowman tree!! We have the best room moms around!!! When we get back from winter break we will be studying the historically significant and amazing life of Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the World. I put together a little unit about her, integrating social studies and ELA. Here are a few pics from the 17 page unit. For your own printable unit on Eleanor Roosevelt, click here!! Another thing we will begin studying is the science concept of living and nonliving. I have shared a mini unit on this topic before, but I revamped it a bit, so I'm offering it again! Here are a few pics from the 9 page unit. For your little living/nonliving unit click here!! I hope these little offerings will help your 2014 get off to a good start. Stay tuned for a little somethin' somethin' later in the week!! Till then, be safe and warm tonight. Welcome 2014!!! Joyfully! Nancy
Classifying Living Things Escape Room Game Try this escape room, style game with your students today! This is a fun game that is perfect for teaching children about the ways that living things can be classified. This game focuses on students finding out facts and information and using these to solve puzzles. This helps them to learn about the different groups living things can be placed in and why this is so important. This activity is great for the beginning of a topic to introduce information or at the end to recap. Students are trying to help an alien understand classifying; they must solve a series of clues, as well as decode different ciphers. There is also a video to start the game off; the video is included along with a YouTube link if you prefer to use that. This is an interactive game which can be timed. Students try and solve clues and questions before the time is up, you the teacher, can decide how much time your students have to complete the task. I suggest 45 minutes, but it is up to you. The tasks can be placed around the classroom for students to find for a more active game or distributed by you at their desks. After each task is solved students win a puzzle piece, the final puzzle along with the answers to the tasks lead the students to a phrase which directs to a congratulatory video (also on YouTube but with a copy provided) Please ask if you have any questions
