To help young children identify number sets visually with automaticity, they need lots of practice composing and decomposing ten frames. In time they will know automatically the amount in a number set without having to count the objects one at a time. This is also called subitizing. These fall themed ten frame activity is perfect for an independent math station. Along with our plant unit we did a short apple unit. Since I was doing plants during science, I mainly used these apple activities during reading and math. I got many of my activities from Deanna Jump's apple unit. First I read her book, Who took the Apples from the Apple Tree? The kids absolutely LOVED it! We then made our own class book and it is by far the most popular class book. The kids loved my drawing at the end....I love to hear them giggling as they read it in the library center. We also read an apple poem that goes to the tune of I'm a Little Teapot. I found it here along with several other cute apple poems and fingerplays. After decorating the front, a few of my kids drew some adorable pictures on the back. We also did several word problems that were apple-themed. When I have students do word problems, I do not tell them how to solve the problem, but instead let them come up with their own strategies. At the end of math, I let a few kids share their ideas so the rest of the class can learn from each other. As a way to differentiate, I leave blanks in my questions so kids can insert higher and higher numbers. First problem: Student 1 ate 2 apples and Student 2 ate some apples. They ate 4 apples altogether. How many apples did Student 1 eat? Second problem: Student 1 has 6 apples. She wants to share with Student 2. If she and Student 2 get the same amount of apples, how many apples will each girl get? My favorite activity was also from Deanna's unit. She had a short apple poem craft that went from eating an apple to planting the seeds that grow into a tree. Coming Soon: Family Unit!

We've been busy making more fall around here. This time we cut the leaves out of coffee filters, and drew on lines with a glue gun. Then I let the girls use watercolor paints to decorate the leaves. It made for a pretty effect!

Fall is here! The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting cool, and pumpkins are everywhere! It is my favorite season and I love to share my passion for fall leaves with my students! I love to send my students on a fall leaf walk to collect leaves. Then we press them for two weeks. If you don't have a leaf and flower press in your classroom I highly recommend you get one. Then we make things with the leaves... I love the leaf creatures my students made last year. We read this book to the kids first. I also showed them lots of images of leaf collages on my iPad. The kids had lots of inspiration and ideas to kick start their own creativity. Then they set to work to make an animal or person using the leaves we had collected. This is a great book and is a good investment for your classroom library. The leaf creatures were awesome! I was impressed with the kids' ideas as well. It was an open ended writing activity, the students told me their sentence and I wrote it on a 1" paper strip. We read it together, then I cut it up, mixed up the words, and each student has to fix it up and glue it down. This is a great Kindergarten literacy activity! Some other great books about fall leaves to read to your kiddos are: We also made some fun fall trees. The kids used oil pastels to draw the trunks and then used cotton swabs to dot on the leaves using beautiful fall colors. I just adore these! I love the trees that have dramatic cascades of leaves falling. So darn cute! We also do a cute little poem, The Leaves are Falling Down. It can be sung to the tune of the Farmer in the Dell. We sing it together as a shared reading activity, then the kids do it themselves as a choice after jobs(centers) are completed. It's simple and it helps build confidence as readers when they do it independently. I hope these ideas will get your creative juices flowing for fun fall projects in your classroom! FOR PRIMARY GRADES: Making Words - Scarecrow and Pumpkin Students cut the letters out at the bottom of the page. Arrange the letters to make different words. Write the words that are made from the letters on the recording sheet. This can be used for homework, as a center, or even a timed activity. FOR INTERMEDIATE GRADES: Words with Fall & Word Bank 1. Students will brainstorm a list of words that have the word fall in it. This can be done individually, with a partner, or as a team. 2. Share fall word bank. 3.
