I have not one but two finishes to share :-D But first the background story. Quilts 15 and 16 for '17 Specifically the cream background. You see, the Wild Nectar fabrics with a cream background did not make the cut for Esmeralda, because they would not stand out against the white background. Poor Contrast with White But they are too pretty to ignore. Just need a better setting to highlight their beauty. I also had some fabric left over from the border, binding and the backing. 4-patch blocks from backing, binding and border And these leftover squares now beckoned to me - constantly. Come get me. Don't you want to make something with me. How do you deal with the siren song of the scraps? I gave in. Enjoying the contrast See how much alive these cream fabrics are against the blue/teal/aqua 4-patch blocks. But it still needed something - a pop. The pop of orange After a few iterations, addition of orange solid from my stash, sewing and trimming, I came up with this little beauty. Charlie's Birds The cream squares are in good company with teal/aqua/navy four-patch blocks. The orange makes it pop and the tangerine binding makes it all come together. Ta da!!! This Peanuts Easter themed fabric was perfect for backing and the tangerine binding complements the green beautifully. Easter with Charlie Brown Because of Charlie Brown on the backing and humming birds on the front, I have named this quilt - Charlie's Birds. Yes, I am smiling too. Labelled The finished quilt measures about 36" square and it makes me very happy :-) Happiness To be able to squeeze out a second quilt from these gorgeous fabrics feels like double-dipping :-D Let's continue to double-dip. Shall we? To make the corner triangles for Esmeralda, I had to trim the layer cake into 8" squares, leaving me with several 2" strips left over. 2" strips - Scraps from Esmeralda Do you know the trouble with 2" strips that are 8" and 10" long? They are SHORT!!! Meaning they are too big to throw away and too small to use. I had just the perfect plan - a simple and free tutorial to use them up!!! Here you go. 1. Take three strips, 2" by 10", and stitch them along the length, using a scant 1/4" seam. You should have a unit measuring 5" by 10". Cross cut into five sections, measuring 2" by 5" each. Repeat the process for all 10" strips. Three strips 2" by 8" Cut into 2" sections 2. Similarly, take three strips, 2" by 8", and stitch them along the length, using a scant 1/4" seam. You should have a unit measuring 5" by 8". Cross cut into four sections, measuring 2" by 5" each. Repeat the process for all 8" strips. Peach and Aqua = Loveliness 3. Cut background fabric into 2" strips. Sub-cut into 2" by 5" rectangles. Background Strips 2" 4. Place the background strips one on either side of the strata strips and sew. You should have a block measuring 5". Trimmed Block Now make some more. 5" Blocks Arrange the blocks alternating direction. Sew blocks into rows and rows into columns. For a 41" square quilt, you will need 81 blocks, arranged 9 by 9. Here is a handy little graphic for your use, showing finished sizes. Using all of my leftover strips, I ended up with 90 blocks. Finished Flimsy Arranged 9 by 10 and added skinny borders. Used this Nursery Rhymes Fabric for the backing. Quilted simply with wavy lines using my walking foot. The turquoise binding works perfectly with both the front and the back. Finished The finished quilt measures about 42" by 46". Paul, the model I am calling this one Nectar Drops. Labelled A second quilt (top) from Esmeralda's scraps is Double Dipping, but a third flimsy - now that is Triple Dipping. Or Double Dipping - Twice!!! Two finishes!!! The focus fabric strip sets were scraps leftover from making Kashvi, but there is nothing scrappy about Diva! Finishing at 51" by 68" she glides in royal splendor. Last month I volunteered at the Sacred Threads Quilt Show. There were two separate exhibits. The first smaller exhibit was titled - OURstory Quilts - Human Rights Stories in Fabric. I am sharing a small sample of the quilts from each. The picture of the quilt is followed by the maker's description. Anne Smyers is in my quilt guild. I remember when she was working on this quilt and mentioned that the base fabric was just two colors. That is such an inaccurate representation of us because we are not just black and white. So she dyed the individual faces to create all the complexions. It is like the International Sisters are dancing in the Garden of Humanity. I do still believe that most people are good at heart. Only if we listened to our hearts...and not the hate. If we know now that 1957 was a huge mistake then how can we sit quietly as the current prejudices are perpetrated? Forgive the poor quality of the pictures. It is difficult to see properly through tears or hold the camera steady while sobbing. The main exhibit had 240 quilts is six categories - Joy, Grief, Inspiration, Healing, Spirituality, and Peace & Brotherhood. In addition there was the Eye Contact exhibit. I took several pictures but the link shows a video of the exhibit. Here is a small sample of quilts from the main exhibit. Just like Ann Bertorelli, I am horrified by those who perpetrate such torture on innocent children. How is this not a human rights violation? This quilter was also inspired by the movie Coco. Such a fun quilt and so very different from my simple interpretation in Poco Loco. This must have been such a difficult quilt to make. One does not just remember the abuse one relives it. I find it remarkable also because Arlene Wagner chose to display it not under GRIEF but under HEALING. Of all the quilts I saw that day this one haunts me the most. Between the time I saw this quilt and the time I could share these pictures with you, there were mass shootings in El Paso, in Gilroy and in Dayton and we need to make more hearts. How can we make hearts when our hearts are breaking? I know how I feel. I feel extremely saddened. I feel angry and I feel violated. I don't know how to process it all. I was going to write a short description with a few pictures from Quiltcon. Or so I thought. But Quiltcon exceeded all my expectations and it therefore deserves a full post of its own. Sunday at Quiltcon I dropped off the completed flimsies at the collection point next to registration. The blocks were overflowing from the table, when I handed her my contribution. Woman 1 - How are they going to take everything back? Woman 2 - It is a good problem to have. I silently wished there wasn't a need for these blocks/quilts. Let the eye candy begin. Making Waves by Jayne Willis Damned by Skye Rayburn Usually I would be hard pressed to pick one favorite in a quilt show that had so many spectacular beauties. Also it is hard to imagine that I would pick a quilt that had no color. But this is that quilt. It made me so happy, I have been going around and showing it to complete muggles and reliving the experience of reading it the very first time. I love this one!!! Kudos to you Tulsa Modern Quilt Guild. For best experience, read aloud from left to right, one line at a time. As far as techniques go, this is the one that I want to learn. I had the opportunity to meet the designer Audrey Esarey. She won two ribbons but this is not one of them. You can see her winning quilts on the MQG website. Retro Radial by Audrey Esarey I was not familiar with Lizzo's music or this song, but I fixed that as soon as I returned. And I can totally relate to this quilt - music or not. I Heart Lizzo by Alison chambers Can you Get Inside by Isabel Munoz Resonance by Cassandra Beaver Nothing I Desire by Patti Coppock Typographic Abstraction by Jessica Wheelahan I was happy (but not surprised) to see Cindy's quilt. She is in my guild. Kaleidoscope by Cindy Grisdela This was a spectacular beauty that left both Mell and me awestruck!!! And yet not a ribbon in sight. Hmmm... Zenith by Cassandra Beaver We ended the day supremely exhausted but insanely happy. People of Quiltcon I met Alison Glass and showed off my finisher's pin from the Trinket QAL. She was kind enough to pose for a selfie. With Alison Glass I met Vasudha of Storied Quilts and talked about future quilty ideas. I invited her to DC and she offered to host me for the Quilt Market. With Vasudha Mell and I were admiring a quilt and trying to figure out the piecing. Mell - It is partial seams Me - Yes, but it is not partial seams in a block. It is the whole quilt. She had to sew one huge jagged edge of fabric to the next huge jagged edge of fabric. That is when Victoria Findlay Wolfe surprised us, came from behind and said - Totally crazy, isn't it. We chatted for a bit and I called her a glutton for punishment. She wholehearted agreed and then I took this picture of her. Victoria Findlay Wolfe I met Anja but forgot to take picture. The best part of the day was when a kind looking woman approached me and asked me if I was Preeti of Sew Preeti Quilts. Yes, I replied. Someone actually recognized me from the blog!!! Boy, I have arrived. It was a mild high. OK, it was a huge high. It was Kathleen. Oh but your picture doesn't do you justice, I remarked. She smiled and accepted the compliment. We hugged and chatted. Sightseeing in Austin Monday morning Mell and I decided to check out the Capital in Austin. Here are few pictures. More often than not, quilt guild workshops are on weekdays and are not conducive to those of us not yet retired from our day jobs. But when the guild arranged a two-part workshop with Gloria Loughman on two weekends (9/11 and 9/18), I wasted no time and signed up for it. I bought the recommended pattern and downloaded the instructions. I watched the videos and read the downloaded pattern sheets. That was in July. Come September, I am buried deep in Island Batik October Challenge. It has been rather all-consuming. Improvisational Piecing Iberian Lynx Silhouette So when the Gloria Loughman workshop started at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon, I joined on Zoom but continued working on the Iberian Lynx project (Island Batik October Challenge). The workshop was terrific. Gloria is an excellent teacher with lots of examples from her work. She would explain a few things and then give 30 minutes for sewing, while she was available to answer questions, give feedback and make suggestions. Me: I am so torn. Paul: What's up? Me: I really want to work on this "Light up your Landscape" project. Paul: So why don't you? Me: I am in the middle of something else. Paul (looking at the class materials): With all those light and dark colors, it is neat. Me: That is exactly why I want to dive in. Paul: There are so many guns held at your head but the only hand holding them is yours. He has a point. I focused the next few days (Sunday - Wednesday) on completing the top for the Iberian Lynx project (Island Batik October Challenge). Then I dropped it to make the Landscape quilt. My hope was to have something done before the second part of the workshop on following Saturday, 9/18. Tiles Cut Arranging Tiles Brick by Brick Completed Sky From Thursday through Saturday afternoon, I focused on the workshop project. When it was time for Workshop - Part 2, I was fully focused. No distractions. Choosing foreground I showed my progress to Gloria. She approved. I worked on the different elements of the landscape during the 30 minute sewing sessions. Completed Sky Sewn!!! Island Batik for foliage By the end of the workshop, I was so far along that I had to finish it. I have named it Gul Mohar, because the yellow/orange blooms are like those of the Gul Mohar tree, common in India. Gul Mohar Of course, some of you may want to get up close and personal. Here you go :-) But truly, the effect of light appears best when viewed from a distance. I am loving it and I am so glad that I took the plunge. I highly recommend Gloria Loughman's workshop. She is an accomplished artist and a terrific teacher. Gul Mohar finished at 13" by 19", and became my Dreami (Drop everything and make it) for September. Come September, I am buried deep in Island Batik October Challenge. It has been rather all-consuming. Improvisational Piecing Iberian Lynx Silhouette So when the Gloria Loughman workshop started at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon, I joined on Zoom but continued working on the Iberian Lynx project (Island Batik October Challenge). The workshop was terrific. Gloria is an excellent teacher with lots of examples from her work. She would explain a few things and then give 30 minutes for sewing, while she was available to answer questions, give feedback and make suggestions. Me: I am so torn. Paul: What's up? Me: I really want to work on this "Light up your Landscape" project. Paul: So why don't you? Me: I am in the middle of something else. Paul (looking at the class materials): With all those light and dark colors, it is neat. Me: That is exactly why I want to dive in. Paul: There are so many guns held at your head but the only hand holding them is yours. He has a point. I focused the next few days (Sunday - Wednesday) on completing the top for the Iberian Lynx project (Island Batik October Challenge). Then I dropped it to make the Landscape quilt. My hope was to have something done before the second part of the workshop on following Saturday, 9/18. Tiles Cut Arranging Tiles Brick by Brick Completed Sky From Thursday through Saturday afternoon, I focused on the workshop project. When it was time for Workshop - Part 2, I was fully focused. No distractions. Choosing foreground I showed my progress to Gloria. She approved. I worked on the different elements of the landscape during the 30 minute sewing sessions. Completed Sky Sewn!!! Island Batik for foliage By the end of the workshop, I was so far along that I had to finish it. I have named it Gul Mohar, because the yellow/orange blooms are like those of the Gul Mohar tree, common in India. Gul Mohar Of course, some of you may want to get up close and personal. Here you go :-) But truly, the effect of light appears best when viewed from a distance. I am loving it and I am so glad that I took the plunge. I highly recommend Gloria Loughman's workshop. She is an accomplished artist and a terrific teacher. Gul Mohar finished at 13" by 19", and became my Dreami (Drop everything and make it) for September.
