This resource is for teachers and other adults who wish to take the Special education Praxis text (Special Education Praxis (5354): Core Knowledge and Application). In these pages I included information I used when I studied for the SPED praxis but I am not suggesting it is all the information you may need to know. This is my study guide and it helped me pass the praxis. I am posting it here for you in hopes it will help you too! It includes 37 pages divided into the 5 parts of the test as suggested by ETS: Development and Characteristics of Learners (approximately 16%) Planning and the Learning Environment (approximately 23%) Instruction (approximately 23%) Assessment (approximately 18%) Foundations and Professional Responsibilities (approximately 20%) I also included most of the practice questions suggested by ETS for each section because they helped me focus on the information I needed to include in my guide. The crown is a freebie from Burger King We are studying the American Revolution in my classroom. I wanted to show my students how the colonist felt over paying taxes to a distant king, so I staged a reenactment. First, I gave all the students some M&Ms in a cup. Then I appointed a student to be king and two to be tax collectors. I told all the students wearing red to raise their hand and asked the "king" if he wanted to collect taxes, M&Ms, from the students wearing red or not wearing red. The fun really began when the "king" made up more new taxes. He imposed a Girl Tax, Glasses Tax, Sibling Tax, and so on until their cups were almost empty. I will admit it got rather noisy with all the protests from the tax payers. The students were outraged! This set the stage for a lesson on the real taxes imposed on the colonist. After the reenactment we watched a short School House Rock video, "No More King." Finally, we made a taxes foldable. At this point the students were really interested in finding out about the real taxes the colonists were expected to pay. We even learned about the Sons of Liberty, and they decided they supported them. I made the tax collectors wear gloves so I could redistribute the M&Ms at the end of the lesson. They were so relieved to find out their candy was being returned to them. I don't think this is a history lesson they will soon forget, and that truly is Classroom Magic! Teaching Tip of the Week: Can't get YouTube at school? Don't worry you can download the video for free and save it to your flash-drive with Zamzar. It's simple, just copy the video address from the address bar at YouTube, click URL on step 1 on Zamzar, paste the address in, Step 2 choose to convert to wmv, Step 3 insert your e-mail, and Step 4 convert. In just a few minutes they will send you the video download to your email address. You only have 24 hours to save it to a flash-drive or your computer. I use this ALL the time and have acquired a large resource of videos for teaching. Anchor Chart of the Week (Opps! I left the d off of thousandths. Rrr..) This is a helpful poem to help students read decimals. If they follow the instructions in the poem they will say it and write it correctly every time! Question of the Week: What's your favorite history lesson to teach?

"I have so much paperwork. Where do I start?"
As much as we would like to think that the public school system will accommodate the individual needs of our kids, many administrators don’t like to dip from the general education fund for a single student. As a result, parents often have to fight to obtain reasonable accommodations for their children that have learning disabilities as well as other disabilities that impact learning. The key to navigating this rocky river is to understand the laws and lingo that offers mandated accommodations so that you can be the best possible advocate for your situation. This blog will compare and contrast the mandates required for both 504 and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) designations. What are the Laws that Mandate 504 Accommodations? 1) Rehabilitation Act 1973, 1993, 1998 This 1973 Act bans discrimination against students with learning disabilities by any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance, including schools. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States... shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance" 2) Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 1990, 2008 Extended Protections to State and Local Organizations: Under ADA, an individual with a disability is a person who: 1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; or 2) has a record of such an impairment; or 3) is regarded as having such an impairment. What is the Law that Mandates IEP Accommodations? Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 1997, 2004 IDEA makes an attempt to ensure that every student with disabilities receives special education services and due process. More importantly, a bar was set in terms of what students with disabilities could expect: a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Under IDEA any student found to have a disability and requiring classroom accommodations must have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Prepared by a team that includes school officials, teachers and parents, the IEP should contain: Current level of academic achievement. Annual, measurable goals. Calendar plan for periodic progress reports. A statement of the special services and aids to be provided to the child. For more information and exact wording, see the U.S. Department of Education website. A Quick Comparison of IEP and 504 Plans Just remember, the more informed you are about your child's needs and the legal rights that they deserve, the more the schools will accommodate your situation.
