A French butter dish is a container used to maintain the freshness and spreadable consistency of butter without refrigeration. This late 19th-century French-designed pottery crock has two parts: a base that holds water, and a cup to hold the packed butter which also serves as a lid. The cup containing butter is placed into the base, where water creates an airtight seal that keeps the air (and thus oxygen) away from the butter so that refrigeration is not needed, and the butter can be used in its soft form. This method will keep butter for around a month provided it is kept at temperatures below 80 °F (27 °C) and the water is changed regularly. This one is 4" high and 4 1/2" wide.

For some time I've been thinking of making a covered butter dish but hesitated because of the complexity of the task, butter dish template tribulations. Today I decided to push through my hesitation. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say. There are different sizes of sticks of butter to consider. I read East of the Rockies in the U.S. most butter is sold in sticks which measure 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 x 5 inches. West of the Rockies in the U.S. most butter is sold in sticks that measure 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Then I measured my stick of butter and it's 1 1/4 by 4 3/4 inches. Oh brother. There's clay shrinkage rates to consider. My white stoneware shrinks 11 1/2 percent when fired to cone 6. Then I reasoned I need to allow for a little space between the cover and the stick of butter so it doesn't stick to the cover on the inside or top. I also need to allow for the thickness of the clay form when fired. After calculating size, shrinkage, and extra space, I decided to wing it. I grabbed some bubble wrap as texture and made a butter dish large enough to hold either size stick of butter. If you have measurements for a butter dish you'd like to share please let me know. I'll post my measurements after final firing if my butter dish turns out. I'll be at the farmer's market Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm. Hope to see you there. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
I start with a pound and a half of clay, and throw a thick plate, about 6 inches in diameter. It's best to have a well-defined rim, as the r...

A few new critters have joined the gang. If you love animals, or know someone who does, these happy little dishes are just the thing. Individually hand-sculpted from stoneware clay and brush-glazed in fun, food-safe glazes, they are the perfect useful accent piece. I call them incidental dishes because they can do so many things. Loaded with personality, they'll hold things and make you smile at the same time. Because I cut out their features free-hand with no patterns, each one has its own unique characteristics. They're fun alone or in a grouping. Except for the cows, there’s only one of each design. Grab your favorite fast! - Main body of each dish is roughly 6 x 4, but sizes vary with ears, legs and curve of dish. - Each is made with a gentle curve to hold whatever small things need holding - perhaps a spoon, candy, earrings, decorative soaps or pocket change. - Colors may vary depending on the setting of your monitor. - Listing price is for one dish of your choice. Select your favorite using the dropdown arrow. All pictures - except the final two showing dish curves and items IN the dishes - are of the actual dishes available in this listing. - All my work is original, individually hand-sculpted, brush-glazed and kiln-fired personally by me. As a handmade original, it will show the variations that are the hallmark of pieces lovingly made from scratch by the original designer. Hand-carved stamps are used to mark each piece with my initials, name or symbol. If you're sending directly as a gift, please message me if you'd like me to include a special note from you.
