Tweet In the past few years, I have posted some of my favorite songs and videos about shapes, counting, multiplication, coins, time, fractions, teen numbers, area and perimeter and addition facts. I try to keep these posts up to date with the latest songs and videos I am using with my students. They are a great way to get a little movement break while still working on important math concepts. One area that has changed and improved a lot is the number of videos and songs for teaching shapes that are now available. Instead of updating my old post on You Tube videos for shapes, today I am going to share with you some of my current favorites for 2-D shapes and later this week I will share some of my favorites for 3-D shapes. Jack Hartmann's Shape Songs Jack Hartmann's You Tube channel is always coming out with new songs that are great for primary students. He has some excellent songs for helping kids remember 2-D shapes and many of his videos include some exercise and make great movement breaks. Secret Agent Shapes This one is all about finding shapes around the classroom. Two Dimensional Shapes Song This one is new to us this year. It is short and sweet and to the tune of this old man. Shapes Song for Kindergarten A great song for primary kids, this one has a lot of real life examples. My students have been using these 2-D shape cards to play 8 different games! Shape Name Game This one is one I use in primary and as a review with older kids. There are a lot of different shapes presented here! The end of the song has 3-D shapes as well. Polygon Song This one is a little more detailed and I use it with grades 1-4. It has great information about all kinds of polygons. Square and Trapezoid Shape Videos Have Fun Teaching has a series of these videos about many 2-D Shapes. They provide a good level of detail about the attributes of these shapes. One of our favorite games with our 2-D shape cards has been playing Pyramid. It is a lot like the classic solitaire game Pyramid 13! Do you have any favorite 2-D shape videos? Tweet Clip art by Whimsy Workshop Teaching Recently I have posted about how I have been using You Tube videos to give students a movement break or during transition times. I tend to choose songs that the kids can get up and dance or move around to. It has really helped the last few weeks as kids have been spending less time outside due to the weather. I have also shared my favorite videos for coins, counting and shapes, area and perimeter and telling time. Today I want to share with you some of my favorite You Tube videos for learning multiplication facts. You might also be interested in my favorite math literature about multiplication. Uptown Funk Parody This video is very unique! It is about the conceptual idea of multiplication being groups of equal things and the vocabulary of multiplication. It has a catchy tune that kids love to use for brain breaks. Multiples 3 Times Tables Shows skip counting by 3 and multiplying by 3. This You Tube Channel also has great songs and videos for all the other numbers up to 12. You can go here to see them all! Six Times Tables (Cover of Cheerleader by OMI) This clever teacher has done several parodies of very popular songs to help kids learn important topics. Tweet This time of year you will find me working hard on counting skills including counting by 2's. A few weeks ago, I shared 10 ways to practice counting by 2. I received an email from a reader with a few suggestions for other math literature book to practice counting by 2's. Because I am always on the lookout for more Math Literature, I was intrigued. I have many math literature books that mention counting by 2 but none where it is the entire focus of the story. I knew I had to get these books, and I am glad I did. Mooove Over!: A Book about Counting by Twos The entire focus of this book is counting by 2's! It is in the context of animals getting on a trolley with a capacity of 20. I used these cute cards along with this story. Penguin Pairs: Counting by 2s I love using penguins as a winter theme in primary classrooms and this fun count by 2's to 20 book will be a great addition to my penguin math materials. I also stumbled upon this great video this week! I love the songs for counting by 5, 2, and 10 and LOVE the movements as well! H This video is by Heidi Songs which is definitely a resource I will be checking out further! If you have used any of the resources from Heidi Songs, please let me know in the comments below! I will not nag my students ever again. Instead I will brag about the amazing things I see. You know what will happen next! The good will build upon the good. How It Works For Me: Sometimes I am a wealth of joy and praise, and I make it rain affirmations and rewards. Sometimes... my compassion has fatigued and I just want to show a movie every day for the rest of the week. So here is what I do daily so that the kids are affirmed not matter how I "feel". I shot a video for you. Put in your ear phones or better yet - go hide in the bathroom with your phone and have a few moments of peace and enjoy a video! This video: shot in a real classroom real kids real teacher real solutions for affirming your students quickly and easily shows implementation, organization, and a real in-class 30 second awards ceremony Awarding Kids / 30 Second Awards Ceremony: Just in case the video isn't working, I thought I might explain as well: Writing out the awards During last recess, I start pulling notes from a pocket chart (my friend uses a shoe holder) I write names on 5 mini awards. I choose 1 person from each table group (I have 5 table groups) I cross their name off my seating chart. By the end of the week I have systematically affirmed every child in my class. Because their are 85 notes to choose from, the affirmation has been genuine. Some kids are harder to enjoy. Let's be real. If you have a nose picker in your class you know what I mean. But every single child does something right and these awards help us see that. The nose picker child, keeps a clean nose and a clean desk... See what I mean. The 30 Second Ceremony: In the last 10 minutes, as the kids finish packing up, they come to the carpet wearing their packs. We have a 30 second classroom awards ceremony. I call out a name I say what the award is for They stand, come forward, and I shake their hand. They take their award. They stand in front of the group. I award 5-7 kids. ( See graphic below) It looks something like this… The Audience: The “audience kids” take out their imaginary cameras They make picture taking sounds "click-click" Then they shout in unison, “You’re FAMOUS!” The audience learns to support and encourage the recipients who are are beaming, blossoming, and making me tear up almost every day. Results: The awarded kids go soaring out the door and their first words when they get in the car are… “MRS KNIGHT GAVE ME A CLASSROOM AWARD TODAY! ! !” The mother kisses her elated child, and she feels her child was "seen" and loved on at school. Her child feels loved by me and like a star. They feel valued and important. No matter how I "felt" that day, I was an encouragement We never know what a child can become with extra encouragement. Maya Angelou loved words! And once she found her voice, she shared it with the world! Her grandmother was the biggest encouragement in her life! Imagine if her teacher had also been a great encouragement. Maybe someday one of my students will come back and say, “Thanks for the encouragement notes Mrs. Knight. It made a difference!” Subs need to praise the kids too- I leave a series of 4 notes for my sub to hand out at the end of the day for the kids who helped her most. My last sub begged me for a copy of the notes. She plans to use them from now on because being a guest teacher is tough. Organizing is easy! You can run full page copies or the 1/4 page ones like I do. I keep 20 of each award on hand at all times. I keep mine in a pocket chart. But if wall space is an issue, here are other ideas. an index card file a shoe hanger clear sleeves in a folder or just stacks standing on end in a drawer. Getting Started: Start with 1 kind of award I recommend starting with the "Printing Prince" and "Printing Princess" award. It's so easy to see who deserves it and so easy for the rest of the class to try for. Award 2 kids a day during that 1st week. Week 2 I recommend adding the "Peacemakers" award. Now you are awarding neat printers and peacemakers. The 3rd week add the "Awesome Improvement" award because by now the kids are so hungry to please you, they have all improved in huge ways. By week 4 you are ready to fly! Keeping Track: I included lots of management tips check off sheets a complete table of contents in the unit everything included helps you be organized and stay positive! So are you ready to: change the dynamic in your classroom? end the day as well as you start it? have the children blossom and the parents adore you? Then join me!
