I recently discovered and fell in love with the miniature hand painted portrait pendants and brooches from the Thomas L. Mott Company of Birmingham, England. Established in the 1870s, but most popular during the 1920s, the TLM Co. was perhaps most notably known for its work on butterfly wings. I was lucky enough to find two beautiful examples of his portrait pendants, a magnificent and rare ocean scene, and a sweet image of a Georgian lady. It is said that artists in the TLM studio sometimes painted with brushes that only had one hair, such was the fine detailing on these petite treasures. What's not to love? ;) I've also been busy as a 'bee' designing and re-stocking inventory in my Etsy shoppe since I was dangerously low, after shipping some items off to The Spa at Windsor Court in New Orleans. What an incredible piece! This antique portrait miniature locket dates from c.1700-1715, based upon the sitter’s dress and hairstyle, the side locket hinge, and the portrait medium (oil on copper, which went out of fashion by the 1720s in favor of ivory and watercolor). Originally, this locket would have held double portraits, but only one portrait survives. The back of the locket (the shield decoration on the exterior) has a broken panel at the hinge and is empty inside. The panel securely snaps into place but since it is detached from the hinge it does not swing open. This is an incredibly scarce piece from history—very little jewelry survives from the early 1700s, and this is the only locket I have personally seen outside of contemporary portraits (see the included picture of the gentleman holding a portrait miniature from this era and note that he is wearing a locket). Exterior panels both have Baroque style, elaborate hand-engraving. Minor dents to the exterior and some age-related wear to portrait, such as interior dust and some peeling of paint in small areas. Considering this portrait locket is over 300 years of age, these elements testify to its authenticity and are expected. From a private English collection.
