The oldest operating lighthouse in the Great Lakes established in 1825 and rebuilt in 1829 and 1861, was the first lighthouse on Lake Huron and is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Michigan. It helps keep watch over Lake Huron at the entrance to the St. Clair River. The 86 ft light stands above the lake level in a conical stone tower, overlaid with red brick that has been painted white. The keeper's cottage and fog whistle house are red. Tower climbs and tours are available during business hours, weather permitting. Must wear closed-toe shoes. See the Port Huron Museum website for information on group overnights in the restored Duplex building for 20+ people!

The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan and sits where the St. Clair river meets Lake Huron in Port Huron, Michigan. The original lighthouse was built in 1825, but was extended to 86 feet in 1861. The lighthouse has reopened for tours and the Port Huron Museum is doing a fantastic job with this site. If you look at my older photos, you can really see the difference in the building from 2008 to the present. I was able to climb the tower, which is always a treat with ay lighthouse visit. It is definitely worth the visit to this beautiful historical lighthouse. They are open daily over the summer.
Port Huron, Michigan; the light tower was built in 1829, the duplex keepers house was built in 1874.
Coast Guard facility near the Bluewater Bridge in Fort Gratiot, Michigan, St. Clair County. Ok for those who seen this original photo. I replaced it with a simulated HDR one from a free program I down loaded. It brightened up the colors but I think I need to read the how to on this one. The program is tagged in the corner of the photo and is called dynamic photo HDR trial addition.
