I decided to take a break from fixing my paintings for the final critique on Friday (the fumes giving me a headache), so I decided to post about "outsider art". Outsider art is usually made by people who have not had any formal training in art and are usually hospitalized due to psychiatric problems. Much of the artwork usually is incredibly detailed and fantastical. It's a really hard topic to describe since many of these people were cutoff from the rest of the world, so their influences and styles were out of the ordinary. Nick Blinko, the lead singer for the anarcho-punk band Rudimentary Peni, is also and outsider artist. In the past, he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and creates his artwork while not on medication. All of the band's albums contain his artwork as well. The music is also definitely as weird as his art... If you just google Nick Blinko, you can find much more of his art. It's really...crazy...no pun intended... I'll be posting some more during the weekend. This week just has been hard for everyone. Everyone is cranky, upset, or sick about something. So, now I have to finish this painting...then stay up to write my paper. Yay...

Josef Wyler was born in 1965 in a village in the St Galler Rheintal in Switzerland to a sheltered family with a religious father. Josef had a difficult birth and suffered from epilepsy as a child. His early education was also problematic so that he was transferred to a special school for children with learning difficulties, where he stayed for 11 years until 1983. Here he was taught occupational skills, including that of a gardener, which he enjoyed. At this time he returned to his parent's home, however in 1987 he had the first of many psychotic episodes, from which he suffers to this day.
Artist's statement: I was born on 25 November 1979, in Jayapura, the capital of the province of Irian Jaya, which has now changed its name to West Papua - Eastern Indonesia. Since childhood I liked to draw, even sculpt rocks and tree trunks, because where I live there is a river and a forest, but of course I did it just for fun. Later in 2003, the eve of the 24th birthday, I met a supernatural creature, which gives the message to live honestly and patiently. He gave me a title, namely: Raden Sastro Inggil. After that the drive to produce work was even greater and more intense.

Victor Brauner (15 June 1903 - 12 March 1966) was a Romanian Jewish sculptor and painter of surrealistic images. He was born in Piatra Neamț, Romania, the son of a timber manufacturer who subsequently settled in Vienna with his family for a few years. It is there that young Victor attended elementary school. When his family returned to Romania in 1914, he continued his studies at the Evangelical school in Brăila. His interests revolved around zoology during that period.

Mehrdad Rashidi was born in the town of Sari in Northern Iran in 1963. At the age of 20 he fled Iran because of his strongly held political views and settled in Germany. In 2006, for no particular reason, he began to draw. He found it relaxed him and made him feel happy, he also thought of his homeland, his childhood and easier times in his life whilst he doodled on any piece of paper that came to hand.
