About The Artwork The title Fran refers to a dog I had years ago named Francisco. The dog, a whippet breed, lived with me for many years until it got sick and died. Dogs are faithful and inseparable friends. When my first daughter was born, Francisco was already among us. She lived with him until she grew up. This artwork is a tribute to the kind personality of this animal that brought so much joy to my home at that time. Artist Hope Gangloff captures the personalities of her friends and family in brightly colored large-scale portraits. Gangloff’s acrylic and collage paintings show her subjects in intimate settings—often domestic interiors—in poses of relaxation or quiet focus. The artist’s strong but gestural lines create defined shapes that are filled with repetitive marks and bright patterns. Gangloff gives equal textural attention to all areas of the painting, which draws the viewer’s eye to every detail and also contextualizes each portrait sitter in a unique set of surroundings. More

6th Graders did a really nice job on this project. We started off by learning a lot about the artist Roy Lichtenstein. We watched this video and read through this handout. Using iPads and computers students worked on editing their photo to make it in a comic book style. They drew from the image they created. I had to stress to them to draw what they were seeing and not what they thought it should look like. After seeing Lichtenstein's work, students set to work using only primary color markers (and black). They were to fill in some areas solid, and use Lichtenstein's dots in other areas. I had two very different types of students with this project; one group were the students who totally embraced the idea of using interesting colors on their face, and the other who were so self conscious about it they would work with their drawing on their lap so no one could see it. Even in this day in age, you know of the "selfie," many students were just so embarrassed to do this project. It was not because of the colors, but the idea of the self portrait. Do any of you struggle with your older students at the idea of a self portrait? How do you go about problem solving it?

Andrea Kowch has been described as “a powerful voice emerging, demonstrating a highly sensitive consciousness that informs a culturally-laced symbolism.” Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1986, she attended the College for Creative Studies through a Walter B. Ford II scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in 2009, double majoring in illustration and Art Education. Her paintings and works on paper are rich in mood, allegory and precision of medium; reflecting a wealth of influences from Northern Renaissance and American art to the rural landscapes and vernacular architecture of her native Michigan. The recipient of many honors early on in her young career, commenced in 2003 at the age of 17 with seven regional Gold Key awards and two national Gold Medal awards from prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Her acceptance into these juried national exhibitions earned her representation at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. in 2003 and at the Diane von Furstenberg Gallery in New York in 2004. By 2005 she was granted a National ARTS in the Visual Arts Award from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (now the National Young Arts Foundation); an honor that ranks recipients in the top 2% of American talent. The winning entries were exhibited at the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, Miami. In 2008, Kowch received the Best of Show Purchase Award from the Northbrook Library’s annual juried international exhibition, and in the same year received an Illustration Faculty Award from the College for Creative Studies. Kowch has since gone on to receive numerous other Best of Show awards in various juried exhibitions of regional, national and international caliber, and has exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries, including the New York’s RJD Gallery, The Muskegon Museum of Art where her solo retrospective Dream Fields debuted in 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Jacksonville, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, ArtPrize, Art Basal Miami, the Los Angelos Art Show, ArtHamptons and SCOPE NYC, who in 2012, named Kowch one of the top 100 emerging artists in the world. She has also been featured in, and graced the front covers of several national and international publications including; Spectrum, Direct Art, American Art Collector, CMYK, Revue, Womankind (AU), .Cent Magazine (UK), Hestika (ITA), Hi-Fructose and Southwest Art’s annual competition whose winners take center stage in their Emerging Artist Spotlight issue. Kowch’s work can be found in public collections, among them the Muskegon Museum of Art, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Northbrook Library, Northbrook, Illinois and the Brooklyn Art Library, Brooklyn, New York and in many significant private collections worldwide. Kowch resides and works in Michigan where she paints full time, but also serves as an adjunct professor at the College for Creative Studies. She is represented exclusively by the RJD Gallery in New York.
Los Angeles-based artist and actor Joseph Lee paints thickly layered portraits that mask the details and expressions of his subjects’ faces. His abstracted profiles sometimes reveal a subtle hint of an eye, nose, or ear between multi-colored brushstrokes, and are set against matte backgrounds to make each painting pop. Although the facial expressions are often hidden, the self-taught artist intends to bring emotions to each face through the turn of the head or the line of a jaw. More
About The Artwork 1/15 edition+ 1AP, Archival print on metallic paper, “Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it"-Jasper Johns I'm hugely influenced by dada and neo-dada. In this photography project, I explore a peculiar combination of photography, painting & collage. I create three dimensional collages with found objects, food and cheaply printed old paintings. I turn pre-existing works of art into Duchampian ready mades and take photographs of them. I use strong shadows, layering, crumpling and folding effects to give a three dimensional sense in the final work. I reduce the details and forms of painting by covering objects, food. Copies of old masters paintings initially evoke viewers' memory. By using unexpected juxtapositions of objects, I try to create ambiguity and pull viewers' attention deeper to my photographs. In many ways, I examine new type of still life. I felt silly laying in bed all by myself with a stack of read alouds and Beatrix Potter perched on my huge pregnant twin baby belly.
Self-portraiture is synonymous to experimenting and getting to know one's self, it's a classic tradition of art history, but it never fails to be beautiful. And such is Rimel Neffati, who finds amusement within herself, through photography, red lipstick, masks, crowns, and flowers.
Steven Kenny, an artist based in St. Petersburg, Fl, creates portraits that are a devout homage to old-school portraiture and the bizarre. His surreal landscapes pair strange details such as men or women wearing inventive, 17th-century-inspired attire or dangerous animals in the presence of royal-looking children, creating seemingly-dysfunctional juxtapositions that allude to dreamlike imagery. It seems as if Kenny purposely installs these in his artwork in order to intrigue, but most importantly, trigger memories or ideas of dream scenarios.
Fusing charming portraits of wildlife with the severe trappings of historical costume, Bill Mayer (previously) creates darkly fantastical worlds in his detailed gouache paintings. A frog poses in royal dress, a pearl-draped mouse looks ready for a ball amongst massive wedges of cheese, and a rhinoceros stands ready to defend his territory in a suit of armor. The accomplished illustrator lives in Decatur, Georgia and has had a long career as a commercial artist. More
