If you're looking to for a quilt your child can succeed with, this is a Cuddle® Squares Quilt is a great one. My daughter is a reluctant seamstress, but she REALLY love Cuddle® fabrics, so the right choice in fabric was a huge motivation for her. Thanks so much to Shannon Fabrics for sending us their amazing Cuddle® fabrics to try and to Fairfield World for supplying the batting and compensating me for this post. This post contains affiliate links. There's nothing like completing a large sewing project to help build a child's self-esteem and their enthusiasm for sewing. Before sharing the specifics of this project here are a few tips for sewing with kids: Let them choose the fabrics - favorite textures and colors go a long way in building their excitement. Stick with a simple pattern - Square are a great starting point. Use Medium-to-Large Pieces - The larger the pieces, the faster the quilt will go together and they'll see progress quickly. For quilts, I recommend using squares in the 6 to 10 inch range. (Much larger than 10 inches and the pieces can be unwieldy. Use LOTS of pins, especially if you're using Cuddle® fabrics. I use about twice as many pins for a child sewing than I would for myself. Don't worry about imperfections. Little tucks and imperfect corners won't change the coziness of the quilt. Help with the tough parts. In this case, I trimmed the edges square and did the binding. If you're using Cuddle® fabrics stick with their basic prints or shorter pile embossed prints since they tend to shift less while sewing. Note: We put this quilt together using lots of scraps from past Cuddle® projects...because lets face the scraps are too soft and delightful to throw away. Some of the fabrics in this quilt are now out of print, but coordinating Cuddle® Fabrics can easily be purchased in Shannon Fabrics 10" Sweet Strips packs that would be perfect for making this quilt. Materials: 35 assorted 10" Cuddle® Fabric Squares or 1/3 Yard of 6 of your favorite Shannon Cuddle® Fabrics (which come 60" wide). We used Premier Blooms Cuddle® Teal, Trellis Cuddle® Teal, Premier Canvas Cuddle® Ash/Snow, Embossed Star Cuddle® Snow White, Chevron Cuddle Teal, Trellis Cuddle® Black, Embossed Houndstooth White, Houndstooth Teal, Houndstooth Cuddle® Grey and White. 1 1/2 Yards 90" Wide Nature-Fil™ Bamboo Blend Batting 2 Yards Premier Blooms Cuddle® Teal for backing. 1/3 Yard Premier Canvas Cuddle® Ash/Snow for binding. Lots of pins, these extra long color ball pins from Dritz are my favorite because the colored top makes sure it doesn't get lots in the Cuddle® Fabric. Basting Spray (recommended but not required) Walking foot attachment if your machine doesn't have an built in even-feed feature Instructions: Cut your fabric into 10" Squares. When using Cuddle fabric, we strongly encourage you to have a vacuum with hose handy to vacuum any loose fun from each fabric cut immediately. If you're cutting your squares from Cuddle® yardage or 10" Sweet Strips, you should be able to get 6 squares from each strip if you're really careful. You may have to use a bit of the selvage edge, but with Cuddle® fabrics, that's okay. Have your child arrange their squares in a 5 square by 7 square layout. (Or alternately, if you have 36 squares, you could do a 6 x 6 square layout. Check each square to make sure the nap (the way you pet the fabric) is all the same direction. I like the fabric to "pet" toward the bottom of the quilt.) Snap a picture so you can refer to it for square order during sewing. Sew your square together with a 1/2" seam allowance. A walking foot will help a LOT to keep fabric from slipping if your machine doesn't have a built in even feed option. I helped my daughter pin her squares since the cuddle has a tendency to slip. You'll want to use extra long pins to help with the bulk of the fabric. Pin at least every two inches. We sewed ours into 5 square horizontal strips. You might also want to review these tips from Shannon Fabrics on sewing with Cuddle®. Pin your strips together matching square corners by pinning in place. I found not all of my daughters seam allowances were quite the same, which can result in mis-matched corners. When I helped her with pinning the strips together, we matched the corners first and then pinned in between them to help ease the fabric into matching. You'll find the fabric stretches a bit more when sewing the strips together. Once your quilt top is sewn together, I strongly recommend using Basting Spray to hold the layers together while quilting. Then have your child stitch-in-the-ditch along each of the same to complete the quilting. Cuddle fabric is SUPER forgiving if quilting lines end up a little bit crooked because the plushness of the fabric hides mistakes well. (Machine quilting is less frustrating if you're wearing your favorite Chewbacca pajamas...at least if you're 12.) To finish your quilt, if the sides are uneven at all, you'll want to trim them square. I did this for my daughter as well as putting the binding on. Cut five 2" strips from your binding fabric and follow these directions for binding your quilt. And it will be ready to enjoy! You might also like these quilts kids can sew... I've got another fast and free cuddle quilt pattern to share with you today. Shannon Fabrics and Fairfield World sent me these gorgeous cuddle fabrics and bamboo rayon/cotton blend batting as part of a Cuddle Cakes challenge. I have also been compensated me to write this post and design a free quilt pattern for you. All opinions and ideas are 100% my own. This page contains affiliate links. Using Shannon Fabrics precuts, you could easily finish this quilt in a day, and it's super soft and luxurious. Most of the quilts I made either go into my shop or are given away as gifts, but my girls have informed me that this quilt HAS to stay. You can see all the other Fairfield Master Maker's projects here. For full instructions for my quilt, continue below: Materials: 1 Sterling Silver 10" Cuddle Cake from Shannon Fabrics. 2/3 Yard Madrid Cuddle in Violeta from Shannon Fabrics. 2/3 Yard Barcelona Cuddle in Violeta from Shannon Fabrics. 1/3 Yard Granada Cuddle in Violeta from Shannon Fabrics. 2 1/8 Yard Cuddle 3 in Charcoal from Shannon Fabrics for backing. 1/3 Yard Cuddle 3 in Ash from Shannon Fabrics for binding 1 Package 72"x 90" Nature-Fil Bamboo Rayon/Cotton blend batting from Fairfield You can find our fabrics at many local quilt shops and fabric stores, and online at fabric.com, theminkyboutique.com, and fabricdepot.com. And if you're more of a teal or yellow person than purple, Shannon Fabrics has these same prints in Marina, Carbon, and Limon colorways. Other Supplies: Rotary Cutter, Mat, and Quilting Ruler Thread Walking Foot Sewing Machine Basting Spray (Optional) Size: Finished Quilt is approximately 55" x 72" inches. Directions: Start by cutting out your pieces. You'll cut your Granada Cuddle fabric into six 10" squares. Cuddle fabric comes 60" wide, so you'll need to be careful cutting to fit the 6. If you end up short one, don't worry, you'll have a couple extra silver squares and you can substitute one in. Six 10" x 19" rectangles each of your Madrid and Barcelona fabrics. I did this by cutting 10 inch strips and then cutting them into 19" rectangles. Lay out your pieces according to the following pattern. S = Sterling Silver Cuddle Cake Square M = Madrid Rectangle G = Granada Square B = Barcelona Rectangle Feel free vary things according to your tastes. Since the silver squares in the Cuddle Cakes pack vary between light and dark, I tried to keep the light and dark squares balanced. Because I recieved more of the Madrid print and less of the Barcelona, my finished quilt is slightly different from the pattern, but following the pattern will give you an even more balanced quilt. When you're arranging your pieces, note that there are 12 large blocks that each have two squares and one rectangle in them. Also, be sure to lay out your squares so that all of the cuddle "pets" the same direction. I "petted" all my cuddle toward the bottom of the quilt. The exception is the vertical rectangles and those you will need to "pet" to the side. Start by sewing each of your blocks together. Lots of pinning is essential to sewing cuddle fabrics. Sew with a 1/2 inch seam. You will also want to USE A WALKING FOOT on your machine. My machine has a built in dual feed system, so a walking foot wasn't necessary and is not shown in the photo, but you'll want a walking foot on most machines. Once the two squares in your block are sewn together, you need to sew it to the rectangle. Pin well. You'll end up with two kinds of blocks in different varieties. Some will have two silver cuddle cakes squares, and some will have one silver square and one granada square. Also, some of your squares will have vertical rectangles and some will be horizontal. Then sew your blocks into rows the width of your quilt. Each row will have 3 squares. Then sew your rows together to finish your quilt. Finish your quilt the same way you would a regular quilt. Layer your backing, batting, and quilt top. I prefer to baste my quilts with basting spray rather than using pins or a quilting frame. To use spray, lay out your batting on a protected surface and secure the corners with mailing tape or something similar. Lay your quilt top over batting and smooth. Pull back half of quilt top and spray with basting spray. Smooth quilt top back over basting spray beginning from the middle and working out any wrinkles. Repeat for second side of quilt top. Flip your quilt over and repeat for the quilt back. Quilt using your favorite quilting pattern. This quilt would look gorgeous with free motion quilting, but I chose to do X's through all the squares, and I love how it looks on the back. You can do the quilting on your how machine. Just be sure to use a walking foot. Cut five 2" binding strips from your binding fabric to bind your quilt. You may want to refer to these binding tips on the Shannon Fabrics website for binding your quilt. The cuddle fabrics in this quilt are so soft, that you'll just want to curl up in it with your favorite book. I've got another fast and free cuddle quilt pattern to share with you today. Shannon Fabrics and Fairfield World sent me these gorgeous ...
I've had lots of Shannon Cuddle Scraps around for quite a while that have just been begging to be made into something fun, so I decided to put together some fun doll quilts. And at the last minute I decided to add some polyfil too make them extra puffy. I'm SO glad I did. It just makes them so luscious and soft and fun to play dolls with. Thanks to Fairfield World for providing materials and compensating me for this post. Thanks also to Shannon Fabrics for providing me with materials. All opinions and ideas are 100% mine. Post may contain affiliate links. Most puff quilts require making lots of tedious separate puff pockets and then sewing them all together, but NOT THIS ONE!! You will LOVE how simple this is. You sew the whole thing the way you normally would and then we'll add some extra stuffing when we get to the quilting step. They're the perfect size to work well with my new Doll Tent Tutorial on the Shannon Fabrics website. And great for summer time doll picnics. I love the look so much, I think I'm going to need to make some puff pillows for the real people in our house next. Be sure to check out all the links at the bottom of this post for additional coordinating doll tutorials and accessories. Difficulty: Beginner Time: 1-2 Hours Materials: 20 - 6" Coordinating Cuddle Scrap Squares (I'm using scraps from the Doll Luggage Project. Fabrics include Paris Cuddle® Hot Pink, Bubble Dot Cuddle® in Lilac/Hot Pink, Ziggy Soft Cuddle® Snow, Embossed Star Cuddle® Fuchsia, Embossed Heart Cuddle® Lilac and Lattice Soft Cuddle® Jewel.) 22" x 27" Cuddle Fabric for backing (I used Tweet Tweet Cuddle® and Cuddle® Fleece Fuchsia 1/8 yard Cuddle Fabric for binding (I used Flowerfly Cuddle® Paris Pink, and Premier Menagerie Cuddle® Indigo 22" x 27" Nature-Fil™ Bamboo Blend Batting Poly-Fil Supreme® Ultra Plush Fiber Fill 12 Ounce Bag Sewing Machine, thread, and related suppiles Rotary Cutting Mat, Ruler, and Blade (strongly recommended) or scissors Pins Basting Spray (optional) Have your vacuum or hand-vac on hand for vacuuming up all that cuddle fuzz that goes flying when you cut cuddle fabrics. Instructions: Cut your cuddle scraps into 6" squares. You'll need 20 squares for each doll quilt. Don't worry about mixing and matching different textures. The variety makes the quilts more fun. (Can I just say that I love that Shannon Fabrics coodinates colors across their fabric collections...makes their scraps match so beautifully.) Arrange your squares. Mine are pretty random because could had a few squares of some colors and it wasn't enough to make a pattern. Snap a picture to help you remember the order. Sew your squares together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance the way you would for any other quilt. When you're sewing with cuddle it's super helpful to pin your pieces well and/or use a walking foot to help feed fabrics evening through your machine. Now we're going to layer our quilt with our batting. I prefer to use basting spray, especially with cuddle fabrics. Basting spray helps hold it all in place and even the back of the cuddle fabric is slippery. (I do my basting spray on the floor because it's easy to mop after. You may use someone to protect your floor depending on your finish.) You should have your top, batting, and cuddle backing. Trim the backing and batting even with the top. Now we're going to start our quilting by stitching in the ditch BUT WE'RE ONLY GOING TO DO CERTAIN LINES. Stitch all the vertical lines, including the edges, but ONLY SEW ONE horizontal line. Stuff one handful of polyfil into each square on both sides of your horizontal line. At this point, you should have two rows filled...one on each side of your line. Stitch in the ditch to close off the row of squares you just filled. Fill the next row. Repeat. When you get to the last row, you'll need to sew along the edge to close up your pockets. Now it's time to do the binding. Cut your binding fabric into 2" strips. Sew your binding with RIGHT SIDES together onto the top of your quilt with a 3/8 seam allowance. Normally when you sew binding, you need to be careful not to stretch the binding fabric, but because the puffs actually scrunch the quilt up a bit, I STRETCHED THE BINDING SLIGHTLY ON PURPOSE so it would scrunch up with the rest of the quilt. Then bring your binding around to the back of the quilt, fold raw edge under. Pin well and sew in the ditch from the front. (For more cuddle binding tips see the Shannon Fabrics website here.) And your doll is ready to be put to bed. (The mattress shown in this picture is actually the base to my doll tent. you can see how to make your own on the Shannon Fabrics website.) Or if she's not tired maybe she'd rather head to the woods... + or out for a picnic...
